to be difficult.
\n\n
Renting a dumpster from a local company is a great way to get rid of large amounts of yard debris, as long as it’s accepted by your rental company.
\n\n
There are plenty of dumpster rental companies that likely service your area, but not all of them allow yard waste to be disposed of in their containers.
\n\n
When you do find a service that allows for the have the time or large enough quantity to justify a dumpster rental, hiring a junk removal service is also a great option.
\n\n
Yard waste removal is a common service offered by many junk style='text-align:center'>
\n\n
Wood Flooring
\n\n
The top choice in flooring materials, based on ROI and overall desirability, is wood flooring.
\n\n
You can expect to get back all or nearly all of the money put into wood flooring.
\n\n
For example, investing $5,000 in new wood floors throughout the house will likely raise the value of the home by $5,000 or more.
\n\n
Laminate Wood Flooring
\n\n
It’s a cost-effective alternative to wood flooring that can boost a home’s value, just not quite as much as real wood flooring.
\n\n
This is a great option for mid-tier homes where it's common to utilize laminate wood flooring, carpeting, or vinyl.
\n\n
Tile
\n\n
Ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, and other “wet” areas, tile offers varying ROI depending on the type of tile and the type of neighborhood.
\n\n
High-end tile flooring makes sense in a high-end home, but will not offer a great ROI when installed in a low-to-mid level home.
\n\n
Waterproof Vinyl
\n\n
A great option for high-traffic or wet areas when on a budget.
\n\n
This type of flooring doesn’t necessarily offer a great ROI, but fresh flooring can always improve the aesthetic and functionality of a house, which never hurts.
\n\n
Carpeting
\n\n
An affordable option that works well in some areas of the home, such as living rooms, dens, or bedrooms, is carpeting.
\n\n
However, carpeting is typically less favorable compared to wood and laminate wood flooring.
\n\n
\n
<a your site clean as you go.
\n\n
Choosing the right size dumpster for a bathroom renovation project comes down to two main factors:
\n\n
\n\t
Materials being disposed
\n\t
Size of bathroom
\n
\n\n
For an average-size bathroom remodel, a 10 or 20 yard dumpster makes the most sense.
\n\n
A <a dumpster may be necessary for larger bathroom demolitions that include wall removal, disposal of large shower units, or removal of large two-sink vanities.
\n\n
Be sure to measure shower units and vanities to ensure they will fit (length and width) inside your chosen dumpster remove the fixtures or clean up the debris for you.
\n\n
\n
Junk removal services almost always cost more due to labor costs, but many would argue that the convenience is well worth it.
\n
\n\n
For reference, a 20 yard dumpster costs $350 on average for a 7-day rental, while a junk removal clean-up of the same size costs $500 on average.
\n\n
Common Factors That Affect the Cost of Junk Removal:
\n\n
\n\t
Volume of junk or debris
\n\t
How easy it is to access the site/debris
\n\t
Whether or not demolition/disassembly is required
\n\t
Overall complexity of the job
\n
\n\n
Many junk removal companies offer prices starting at $75 to $125 and go up from there based on the factors above.
\n\n
How to Save on Junk Removal Costs:
\n\n
Place the demolition debris in the driveway or at the curb for name='protective'>Protective Gear
\n\n
Attics are notorious for having poor ventilation.
\n\n
Pair that with dust mites and you have the perfect storm for severe colds or allergy flare-ups.
\n\n
Worse yet, if there is an undiagnosed mold or vermin infestation, the air quality dangers are even more serious.
\n\n
Because of these potential health hazards, it is always best practice to wear a protective mask during your attic cleanout.
\n\n
Masks will protect you from inhaling harmful particles that can affect your ability to breathe properly.
\n\n
Additionally, protective gloves and safety glasses are also highly recommended to protect you from dust and other irritants.
\n\n
If your attic is not carpeted like most, bringing knee pads or another piece of soft material to protect your joints from the hard floors will come in handy when you’re cleaning and sorting.
\n\n
Adequate Lighting
\n\n

\n\n
Sometimes an afterthought, proper lighting for your workspace can be the difference between you overlooking evidence of a serious problem or not.
\n\n
Besides the obvious implications of working in a poorly lit space (falling, injury, etc.), not having a reasonable amount of light can make spotting potentially hazardous problems more difficult.
\n\n
While you’re cleaning out your attic, it’s important to keep an eye out for rodent droppings, bug infestations, mold, and other evidence of a contaminated area.
\n\n
Proper lighting makes this task much easier.
\n\n
Safe Temperatures
\n\n
As heat rises, attics can be upwards of 40 degrees warmer than the rest of your home.
\n\n
Tackling an attic cleanout in the summer months can be especially dangerous if the proper precautions aren’t taken.
\n\n
If you live in an area with high temperatures at the time of your project, early mornings or after the sun has set are the safest times to work.
\n\n
Make sure to drink plenty of fluids, paying close attention to how much physical exertion you’re extending and how much you’re sweating.
\n\n
\n
If you’re experiencing an unusual amount of sweat, dizziness, nausea, pale/clammy skin, or a headache, you may be experiencing the first symptoms of a <a there are so many ways to accidentally injure yourself in a tight space like an attic, you don’t want to do it alone.
\n\n
If you have heavy items that you need to bring down from your attic, you’ll need someone to help you navigate the items/and or stairs.
\n\n
It is very unsafe for one person to navigate the balancing act of using stairs on top of carrying items that require your arm strength.
\n\n
Cleaning Supplies
\n\n
Once you feel safe, protected, and ready to get to the nitty-gritty of an attic clean out, you’ll want to gather all the necessary items to make your attic feel like the clean, organized space you’re envisioning.
\n\n
You’ll need:
\n\n
\n\t
Duster
\n\t
Broom & dustpan
\n\t
Vacuum
\n\t
Disinfectant
\n\t
Cleaning cloth
\n\t
Garbage bags
\n
\n\n

\n\n
Step-by-Step Guide to Maximize Efficiency
\n\n
Once you have everything you need to complete the job, it’s time to get to work.
\n\n
Step 1: Clear the Area
\n\n

\n\n
The first thing you’ll want to do is clear out the area.
\n\n
Removing everything from the area is the best way to make sure you don’t miss a single spot while you're cleaning.
\n\n
If that is not feasible, piling everything in a small section of the space to give you access to the rest of the attic will work.
\n\n
Any exposed cloth material, like window curtains or clothing in unsealed boxes should be put through your washer or taken to a dry cleaner.
\n\n
Step 2: Start Dusting
\n\n
If it’s been a long time since you’ve cleaned your attic and there is dust everywhere, it can be overwhelming to know where to even begin.
\n\n
The old saying 'let the dust settle' is an easy way to remember that the best practice is to start from the top of the area and work your way down.
\n\n
Use your duster, preferably one with an extendable arm for hard to reach areas, and begin dusting the ceilings, beams, ceiling fixtures (like lights and fans), walls, trim, and window frames.
\n\n
If you’re using a disposable duster, make sure to have plenty on hand.
\n\n
It’s very easy to underestimate just how much dust has settled in an area until the area is disturbed.
\n\n
Step 3: Sweep and Vacuum
\n\n
Under normal cleaning circumstances, it’s common to sweep before you vacuum.
\n\n
When dealing with large quantities of dust, however, sweeping may push dirt and dust into the air.
\n\n
The best practice when dealing with large amounts of dirt and dust is to vacuum first, then sweep, then vacuum again as needed.
\n\n
It may seem redundant, but you’ll be glad you took this extra step to avoid kicking up dirt and requiring previously cleaned areas to be cleaned again.
\n\n
Step 4: Disinfect
\n\n
Once you’ve cleared every area of your attic from dust, dirt, and other debris, you can clean any windows or glass mirrors.
\n\n
Waiting to do this until the very end will save you from having to do it multiple times.
\n\n
If there are screens in your windows, be sure to remove these and hose them down in your yard or bathroom, size permitting.
\n\n
After that, you can disinfect areas that are touched the most frequently, like light switches, door handles, etc.
\n\n
What to Do After You Clean Out Your Attic
\n\n
Organize
\n\n

\n\n
Now that your attic is clean and ready to host your storage space, you’ll want to sort through everything you were storing to determine what will stay and what will go.
\n\n
Even if you are sure that you’d like to keep everything you had stored in your attic, it’s important to go through and take inventory of your belongings.
\n\n
Not only is this helpful for future reference when you are looking for something you know you own, but it’s also a great way to check for further evidence of any potential attic concerns.
\n\n
If you have cardboard boxes or electrical wires that have been chewed through, or you notice moisture collected in certain areas, these are a sign of a different problem completely.
\n\n
Catching infestations and mold/mildew before they worsen is essential in saving you money in repairs long term.
\n\n
If you are planning on clearing out some old belongings for donation or garbage collection, this is the stage in your attic cleanout to do so.
\n\n
The easiest way to do this is by creating three separate piles: one for donations, one for garbage collection, and one for the items you plan on keeping.
\n\n
Finalize Your Storage Plan
\n\n

\n\n
At this point in your project, you can probaby see the light at the end of the tunnel.
\n\n
The only thing left to do is finalize your storage plan.
\n\n
If you have created piles for donation or garage collection, remove these items with your project partner.
\n\n
These items can be stored in your garage, basement, spare bedroom, or mudroom if you need a reminder to take these items on your way out the door.
\n\n
You’re then left with a clean attic and a pile of items you’d like to keep in it.
\n\n
Organize these boxes/items in a way that allows for easy access.
\n\n
If you know that your most frequent visits to the attic are to swap out your summer clothes for your winter clothes, keep these boxes close to your attic entrance.
\n\n
Similarly, if you have a box of old trophies from the glory days that you never look at but can’t bear to let go of, these items can be strategically placed near the back or bottom of your newly organized storage area.
\n\n
Donate or Dispose
\n\n
Once your attic is clean, organized, and finally a project you can check off your to-do list, the only thing left to do is take your donatable items to a local charity, recyclables to a recycling center, and trash to the dump.
\n\n
For old mattresses, furniture, appliances, and electronics, the easiest and most efficient way to get rid of rid of unwanted items is a more involved process than it was 30-40 years ago, and for good reason!
\n\n
Over 260 million tons of trash are produced every year in the United States.
\n\n
With over half of this amount ending up in landfills, it’s important to pay attention to the type of trash you’re getting rid of and where it is best to do so.
\n\n
Your unwanted household items can be divided into four categories:
\n\n
\n\t
\n\t
Recyclables
\n\t
\n\t
\n\t
Donations
\n\t
\n\t
\n\t
Hazardous
\n\t
\n\t
\n\t
Trash
\n\t
\n
\n\n
Recyclables
\n\n

\n\n
Items made of glass, plastic, paper, cardboard, and metal can most likely be recycled.
\n\n
Additionally, electronics and car batteries are items that can (and should) be recycled, but in the proper locations.
\n\n
Donations
\n\n

\n\n
Clothing, kitchenware, furniture, appliances, decor, and electronics are just some of the items that can be donated if they are in decent condition.
\n\n
Not only is donating beneficial for the global environment and your local economy, but you also get a tax deduction for the total value of the items you donate.
\n\n
Hazardous
\n\n

\n\n
There are hazardous materials that cannot be disposed of in a landfill.
\n\n
Paint cans, household cleaners, tires, motor oil, and computers are a few examples of the most common items banned from landfills.
\n\n
Where you live will determine exactly what is and isn’t accepted in your local landfill.
\n\n
If you’re unsure whether your items are accepted or not, your local junk removal company should be happy to answer any questions you may have.
\n\n
Trash
\n\n

\n\n
Any junk you have that cannot be recycled or donated, and is not a hazardous material, can be placed into your trash pile.
\n\n
2. Get a Quote
\n\n
Getting a junk removal quote is made easy with Hometown.
\n\n
Our search engine shows you service providers in your area and verified reviews from real customers.
\n\n
When you contact a local junk removal company, make sure that you’re as detailed as possible when describing the junk you need hauled away.
\n\n
It’s becoming more and more popular in an era of contactless service to be asked for photographs or video footage of your junk so that you’re provided with the most accurate quote.
\n\n
If you only have an item or two, a majority of companies can provide a quote before coming to your site. However, most companies will require that an employee comes to your location to assess larger projects and provide you with an in-person quote.
\n\n
One of the most convenient aspects of junk removal services is that they arrange their schedule so that their crew is prepared to begin your project on the spot after they provide you with their price to complete the job.
\n\n
3. Create Accessible Path
\n\n

\n\n
Once you’ve organized the junk to be hauled away and finalized details with your service provider, the next and final step is to make sure that there is a clear and accessible path to your items.
\n\n
While it isn’t necessary (unless previously agreed on with the junk removal company) to set items to the curb or near the driveway, doing so will make the process go quickly and easily.
\n\n
This is especially true if you’d rather avoid having anyone in your home for safety or hygienic purposes.
\n\n
If the junk you need removed is too heavy, or if there is simply too much to move, it's okay to leave them in your home or garage as long as there is a clear walking path to and from your pile.
\n\n
In the case of a hoarding situation, failing to clear a path to items that are to be hauled away will mean more labor time for your junk removal crew, and as everyone knows, nothing is free.
\n\n
Longer, more extensive labor can be reflected on your final bill.
\n\n
In conclusion…
\n\n
Junk removal services are an easy way to get rid of bulky unwanted items, or an entire home’s worth of junk.
\n\n
Separating your items into different disposal categories will help you and your junk removal company determine what the scope of the entire project will entail.
\n\n
Getting quotes from multiple companies is a great way to make sure you’re getting the best price.
\n\n
\n
Find a local junk removal company
\n\n
\n
Read more about junk removal here:
\n\n
\n\t
Understanding Junk Removal Quotes
\n\t
How to Choose the Best Junk Removal Company
\n\t
How Much Does it Cost to Haul Away Junk?
\n
\n","teaser":"
With so many health benefits of decluttering a home, more and more people are utilizing local junk removal services. If you’ve never hired a junk removal company, there are a few things you can do to prepare for their arrival. These adjustments include allowing customers to email photos and/or video of their items so that a quote can be done virtually.
\n
\n
\n\n
\n
Find a junk removal company in your area
\n\n
\n
What Factors Affect Junk Removal Pricing
\n\n

\n\n
The biggest factor that is taken into consideration when pricing a junk removal job is the weight of the accumulated items.
\n\n
If you’re throwing out a truck’s worth of drywall debris, it’s likely that you’re going to pay less than someone who is throwing out a truckload of heavy items, like couches, refrigerators, and bedroom furniture.
\n\n
Where you are located will also significantly impact the price companies in your area will charge you.
\n\n
The more remote you are, the fewer service providers tend to be available and the further the company has to travel, which can drive the price up.
\n\n
Living in an area with a higher cost of living will reflect the price companies in your area charge as well.
\n\n
A full truckload in Los Angeles is around $800, while a truckload in Gary, Indiana is around $200.
\n\n
Seasonality and demand can also influence the price you will pay for junk removal in your area with spring and summer being the busy seasons for these types of services.
\n\n
\n
Pro Tip: If your items are in good condition and able to be donated, some junk removal companies will unload your items at a donation center. If this applies to your situation, ask your service provider to provide you with a tax-deductible receipt. Depending on the content of your donation, your write off may be large enough to cover the cost of the junk removal service.
\n
\n\n
Getting Multiple Quotes
\n\n
It is always the best practice to get multiple quotes for a service to ensure that you’re getting the best price.
\n\n
Calling 3-5 junk removal companies in your area will give you a realistic expectation for what is considered reasonable pricing for the job you need completed.
\n\n
If you’re less worried about the financial aspect of your project and place a greater value on the timeframe that the job can be completed, calling several companies will also help you find someone with a schedule that fits your needs.
\n\n
Tipping Junk Removal Workers
\n\n

\n\n
If you’re wondering if you’re supposed to tip junk removal workers, you’re not the only one.
\n\n
As a service that isn’t regularly used by the average consumer, it can be something that is easily overlooked or debated on.
\n\n
Most people involved in the service industry rely on tips as a large part of their income.
\n\n
That being said, 10-20% is typical for excellent service.
\n\n
While tipping is not required for job completion, it’s a great way to reward those that took special care to make your life easier.
\n\n
\n
There are also plenty of other ways to show your appreciation for a job well done, like offering snacks or beverages for a project that takes several hours, leaving a positive review online to encourage others to book their services, and a simple “thank you” in appreciation for a job well done.
\n
\n
\n\n
\n
Contact a junk removal company near you
\n\n
\n
Read more about junk removal here:
\n\n
\n\t
How Much Does It Cost to Haul Away Junk?
\n\t
Junk Removal 101
\n\t
When Is It a Good Idea to Hire a Junk Removal Company?
\n\t
How to Choose the Best Junk Removal Company
\n
\n","teaser":"
Getting quotes from junk removal services is a fairly simple and straightforward process. Ask About Disposal Methods
\n\n
Part of the reason that junk removal services can be a better solution than approaching your project DIY-style is because of their easy access to recycling facilities and donation centers.
\n\n
An estimated $11.4 billion worth of recyclable material enters the United States landfills each year.
\n\n
The stress relief of not having to do all the manual work yourself is only made better by knowing that in hiring the right company, you could also be minimizing your environmental impact.
\n\n

\n\n
3. Research Their Reputation
\n\n
If you do not personally know anyone who has used the company in question, your first instinct is likely to look at online reviews.
\n\n
While this can shed great insight into the integrity and quality of a company’s services, it can also provide a sounding board for phony reviews that are written with an agenda.
\n\n
Finding junk removal services with verified reviews in your area has never been easier than with Hometown Dumpster Rental.
\n\n
Hometown Dumpster Rental personally contacts customers who have hired service providers through their site to collect a review of the company’s performance.
\n\n
From there, reviews are only published if the authenticity of the customer and the completed job can be verified, so you never have to wonder if the gleaming 5-star review is coming from the owner’s mother or if a review describing a horror story was submitted by a competitor.
\n\n

\n\n
4. Find Out Their Availability
\n\n
If by this point on your checklist, you’ve found a local company that recycles and donates as much salvageable material as possible that also has positive verified reviews, none of it will matter if you’re on a strict timeline that they can't accommodate.
\n\n
Spring and summer are considered the busy seasons for these types of services and, depending on where you live, can sometimes be booked solid days to weeks in advance.
\n\n
If you are anticipating needing a junk removal company for an upcoming project, planning early can help prevent delays.
\n\n

\n\n
5. Clarify Your Project Time Frame
\n\n
Most junk removal companies will send someone to your property to provide a quote and will perform the service on the spot if you accept their pricing.
\n\n
This is not always the case and can be dependent on several factors, so clarifying your time limitations and expectations (if present) are important to do prior to booking any services.
\n\n

\n\n
6. Consider Final Costs
\n\n
Since many junk removal quotes are provided in person, it’s important to have a budget in mind before you have one or more companies come to your project site.
\n\n
As previously mentioned, it is not unusual for junk removal companies to perform same-day services if you accept their in-person quote.
\n\n
That being said, you should never feel pressured or obligated to book services if their pricing is not something that makes financial sense for you.
\n\n
It’s important to keep in mind, however, that by saving time, you also save money.
\n\n
This is especially true for business owners in the real estate, construction, and property management industries.
\n\n
The Bottom Line…
\n\n
Don’t be surprised or put-off if you speak with a junk removal service that will only provide in-person quotes, but don’t feel intimidated into hiring them if you feel like their pricing is outside your budget.
\n\n
With so many locally-owned junk removal companies dedicated to recycling or donating the majority of the junk they haul away, it’s worth finding out how your junk will be disposed of.
\n\n
Supporting environmentally ethical companies has never been easier with so many pledging to do their part.
\n\n
\n
Contact a junk removal company in your area
\n\n
\n
Learn more:
\n\n
\n\t
When Is It a Good Idea to Hire a Junk Removal Service
\n\t
How Much Does It Cost to Haul Away Junk?
\n
\n","teaser":"
Hiring a junk removal company can be beneficial for a number of reasons. If you're not sure, just call a hometown trash hauler and describe your project and debris. Most are very helpful. When it comes to dumpster sizes, you may be better off renting a dumpster that is a little too large rather than too small. If you rent a dumpster that is too small, it ends up costing you double to have the first dumpster picked up and a new one delivered.
\r\n\t
Call to learn more - Call one or more of the preferred dumpster rental services that serve your area. Ask about their pricing, standard rental period, weight included in the price, materials not allowed in the trash container, and other rental policies.
\r\n\t
Schedule delivery and arrange payment - Schedule a date for delivery of a temporary dumpster to your home, job site, or place of business. It's recommended that you have your dumpster delivered the day before you actually need it.
\r\n\t
Request pickup - When your finished loading the trash or debris into the roll off dumpster, call the company back and they will pick the dumpster up and haul it away to the landfill, transfer station, or recycling center.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Dumpster rental costs
\r\n\r\n
The cost of renting a dumpster varies widely based on your location. The national average cost of renting a 10 yard dumpster is $300, while the national average cost of renting a 40 cubic yard container is nearly $500 for one-weekek rental. What you pay depends primarily on landfill fees in your area, the size of the container you need, and the dumpster company you select. To get the best price on a dumpster, get quotes from multiple rental companies.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Find a Dumpster Rental Company Near You
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Most companies quote one flat rate fee for delivery, pickup, and disposal (though some add delivery charges separately). The rental rate is usually for a standard period of time (for example... up to 7 days) and includes a certain amount of weight (for example... up to 3 tons). If you exceed this weight allowance, you will be subject to overage fees typically ranging from $50 to $100 per ton that you go over.
\r\n\r\n
When comparing dumpster rental prices between two companies:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Compare apples to apples (or 20 yard dumpsters to other 20 yard dumpsters... dumpster size can have a big impact on price).
\r\n\t
Ask how much time is included in the price and what it will cost if you need the container for a longer period
\r\n\t
Ask how much weight is included in the price and how much 'per ton' it will cost if the dumpster is over weight.
\r\n\t
Ask if any additional fees that may be applied for any reason
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Extra charges may apply if you need the roll off dumpster for longer than a provider's standard rental period. This is typically a per day fee (ie $5 or $10 per day), but some dumpster services will negotiate with you up front if you need it for slightly longer than their standard period.
\r\n\r\n
Pay particular attention to the amount of weight included in your price if you are disposing of heavy construction debris like bricks, cement, roofing shingles, or demolition debris. If you're renting a trash dumpster for cleaning out your home of miscellaneous household debris, you will typically not have to worry about 'over weight' fees because the debris is lighter.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Click Here to Find Reputable Dumpster Rental Providers Near You
\r\n","teaser":"
Learn how to rent a dumpster and be free of your debris. unwanted junk or debris, and each has its place.
\r\n\r\n
Recycling/Reusing
\r\n\r\n
This is the best possible option because it's great for the environment and your wallet.
\r\n\r\n
Always recycle, reuse, or donate materials when you can.
\r\n\r\n
If this is not an option, then it's time to start considering the next disposal options.
\r\n\r\n
Renting a Dumpster
\r\n\r\n
Dumpsters come in a wide range of sizes, from 3 cubic yard dumpster bags to full-size 40 cubic yard construction dumpsters.
\r\n\r\n
It’s an ideal solution for construction, demolition, house cleanouts, roofing, yard waste disposal, and recycling in bulk.
\r\n\r\n
Junk Removal
\r\n\r\n
This is a great option for disposal of e-waste, tough-to-dispose-of wastes, and bulk amounts of debris.
\r\n\r\n
It’s a convenient option—they handle all the removal and disposal for you.
\r\n\r\n
It can become costly for larger cleanups, so it’s something to consider when deciding between renting a dumpster and hiring a junk hauling service.
\r\n\r\n
Hauling Waste Yourself
\r\n\r\n
If you have a truck and/or trailer, hauling the debris yourself to a local landfill is always an option.
\r\n\r\n
The advantage of this method is the lower cost of disposal compared to renting a roll-off, although the tradeoff is less convenience and speed.
\r\n\r\n
The time it takes you to drive and drop off the debris at the nearest landfill can be substantial.
\r\n\r\n
Also, hazardous materials require a permit to haul, so do your due diligence as to the laws in your area regarding the types of waste you are allowed to haul and the types of debris accepted at local landfills (e.g., some accept only C&D debris and not household trash).
\r\n\r\n
Household hazardous waste (HHW) facilities safely process and recycle potentially toxic wastes, such as e-waste, household cleaners, paint, chemicals, medicines, and liquids.
\r\n\r\n
Some communities host HHW events on an annual or biannual basis.
\r\n\r\n
Find the nearest HHW drop off location online by visiting Earth911.com.
\r\n\r\n
And now, let’s discuss specific types of wastes and how to properly get rid of each type.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Types of Junk, Waste, and Debris
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Household Trash and General Waste
\r\n\r\n
Examples: household garbage, furniture, broken toys, packaging materials
\r\n\r\n
This category of waste includes anything you’d typically put in your waste bin.
\r\n\r\n
Generally, this category of waste is taken care of via your waste hauler’s curbside collection service.
\r\n\r\n
However, there are situations that require additional means, like hoarding situations, foreclosure cleanups, moving, and special events that generate a lot of trash.
\r\n\r\n
When you have more than your curbside roll cart can handle, a roll-off container works great for bulk amounts of household trash.
\r\n\r\n
Alternatively, hiring a junk removal company to pick up the trash for you is a convenient disposal method, too, and it may be a more cost-effective option for smaller jobs (less than a few cubic yards of waste).
\r\n\r\n
You could also haul these wastes to the landfill yourself if you live within close proximity of one.
\r\n\r\n
Disposal of appliances containing Freon, paints, liquids, lead-acid batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, and other household hazardous wastes (HHWs) require special handling.
\r\n\r\n
These wastes shouldn’t be mixed in with your household garbage.
\r\n\r\n
Contact your city’s solid waste department to find the nearest HHW facility, or visit the city’s website for more information.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Construction & Demolition (C&D) Debris
\r\n\r\n
Examples: lumber, drywall (sheetrock), wood flooring, carpeting, renovation debris, roofing debris
\r\n\r\n
Residential and commercial construction or demolition projects require the use of a dumpster, junk removal company, or driving the debris to the landfill yourself.
\r\n\r\n
Some U.S. cities require C&D debris to be dropped off at dedicated construction and demolition landfill facilities where it is separated and recycled.
\r\n\r\n
Concrete
\r\n\r\n
Like asphalt, this is a very heavy, dense debris that is best disposed of in a roll-off dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
Most dumpster rental companies require concrete to be separated from other wastes, and it must be loaded in a smaller container, such as a 10 yard bin, to ensure it does not become too heavy of a load for the roll-off truck to handle.
\r\n\r\n
Roofing Shingles
\r\n\r\n
This is a heavy debris that is generally loaded in its own dumpster and not in mixed loads.
\r\n\r\n
Shingles are recycled in most municipalities.
\r\n\r\n
Wood/Lumber
\r\n\r\n
Wood has a potential to be reused if salvaged properly.
\r\n\r\n
Reclaiming wood and selling or donating it is one way to cut down on disposal costs for a project.
\r\n\r\n
Carpeting
\r\n\r\n
A junk removal company offers the most convenient disposal solution in this case.
\r\n\r\n
Renting a dumpster or having your waste hauler pick it up are also valid options.
\r\n\r\n
Many waste haulers require the carpeting to be cut down to a specified length (e.g., 4 ft. lengths), so that may add to the inconvenience of going this route.
\r\n\r\n
Wood/Laminate Flooring
\r\n\r\n
This material is salvageable in many cases.
\r\n\r\n
This would, again, help cut down on disposal costs.
\r\n\r\n
If reclaiming the wood isn’t an option, other cost-effective solutions include renting a roll-off or hiring a junk removal company to pick it up.
\r\n\r\n
Siding
\r\n\r\n
Certain types of siding, such as cedar, are highly desirable, and people will often take it off your hands.
\r\n\r\n
This is great for cutting down on disposal costs.
\r\n\r\n
Simply posting a listing on Craigslist is an easy way to accomplish getting rid of cedar or wood siding.
\r\n\r\n
Vinyl siding is typically disposed of in a dumpster or picked up by a junk removal company.
\r\n\r\n
A dumpster is generally the more cost-effective option for a whole-house siding replacement project.
\r\n\r\n
Kitchen/Bathroom Renovation
\r\n\r\n
This includes cabinets, tubs, sinks, toilets, countertops, and floors.
\r\n\r\n
Much of this material can be reclaimed. Other materials can be disposed of in a roll-off container or via junk removal service.
\r\n\r\n
Most waste haulers do not accept renovation debris via curbside service.
\r\n\r\n
However, some will by appointment for an additional fee.
\r\n\r\n
Metals
\r\n\r\n
Bulk amounts of steel, aluminum, copper, and other metals should be recycled.
\r\n\r\n
Metal is a valuable commodity.
\r\n\r\n
You can eliminate disposal costs and make a few bucks by dropping off metal scraps at a local scrap yard.
\r\n\r\n
If you cannot DIY, some metal recyclers may be able to pick it up, or you can post an ad on Craigslist.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Yard Waste
\r\n\r\n
Examples: tree limbs, bush trimmings, grass clippings
\r\n\r\n
Being that it’s an organic waste, yard debris is best disposed by composting, but dumpsters and junk removal companies are good options, too.
\r\n\r\n
Dumpster companies and junk removal service providers will drop off the yard wastes at the proper facility.
\r\n\r\n
*Most waste haulers don’t allow yard debris mixed in with general waste.
\r\n\r\n
Heavy yard wastes, such as large logs, are best handled by professionals who have the right equipment to safely load and haul away such debris.
\r\n\r\n
Most junk removal companies have the right equipment to take on this type of project.
\r\n\r\n
Consider starting a compost pile if you have the room to do so.
\r\n\r\n
It’s the easiest and least expensive way to get rid of yard debris, plus it produces nutrient-rich compost ideal for farming, landscaping, and flower gardens.
\r\n\r\n
Be sure you know the laws regarding yard waste disposal in your area.
\r\n\r\n
Some cities have made yard debris composting mandatory.
\r\n\r\n
In this case, you’d need to have the debris dropped off at the proper composting facility.
\r\n\r\n
It may not be accepted at the municipal landfill, so be sure to do your due diligence.
\r\n\r\n
Search your city’s solid waste authority website or give them a call to learn more.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Appliances
\r\n\r\n
Examples: kitchen stove (range), microwave, washer, dryer, dishwasher, refrigerator
\r\n\r\n
Hiring a junk removal company for removal of one or several appliances is a quick and cost-effective method of removal. Junk haulers charge a minimum fee of anywhere from $50 to $125, so expect to be charged at least that amount for the appliance removal.
\r\n\r\n
A dumpster works well for disposal of a whole home's worth of appliances, such as during a major renovation project or demolition.
\r\n\r\n
Choose a bigger dumpster than you think you need.
\r\n\r\n
Why? Most roll-off containers have rounded bottoms, while most appliances are bulky and square.
\r\n\r\n
So while you may have 10 cubic yards worth of appliances (think of 10 kitchen stoves, which approximately equals 10 cubic yards), the appliances will consume greater than 10 cubic yards worth of space inside a dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
In this example, a 20 yard bin may be the better choice.
\r\n\r\n
Save on disposal costs by donating working appliances to local charitable organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity.
\r\n\r\n
Some locations may even pick them up for free, so be sure to ask!
\r\n\r\n
Alternatively, you can sell appliances that are still in good shape via Craigslist, Facebook, or by other means.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Household Hazardous Wastes (HHWs)
\r\n\r\n
Examples: lead-acid batteries, fluorescent bulbs, household cleaners, motor oil, chemicals
\r\n\r\n
This class of wastes should never be mixed in with the general waste stream, so avoid putting household hazardous wastes in the waste bin, dumpsters, burning it, burying it, or using any other unsafe disposal method. Doing so can taint drinking water, harm local wildlife, produce unsafe crops at local farms, and pollute the air.
\r\n\r\n
Dispose of HHWs by dropping them off at a local HHW processing facility.
\r\n\r\n
Some communities also host annual or biannual HHW pickup events where you can drop off a wide range of hazardous wastes found in your home.
\r\n\r\n
Junk removal companies, and some dumpster rental providers, will accept HHWs if you discuss it beforehand.
\r\n\r\n
There may or may not be additional fees for handling/hauling of hazardous materials—it depends upon the company and local laws governing HHW handling.
\r\n\r\n
Find a household hazardous waste recycler near you.
\r\n\r\n
Here’s a quick breakdown of common types of HHWs:
\r\n\r\n
Batteries
\r\n\r\n
Common A, AA, AAA, D, and similar dry-cell batteries can be thrown away with your trash.
\r\n\r\n
However, car batteries and other larger batteries need to be properly recycled.
\r\n\r\n
Liquids
\r\n\r\n
This includes motor oil, antifreeze, household cleaners, fuel, and other toxic/flammable liquids.
\r\n\r\n
Motor oil can be safely dropped off for recycling at a local oil change facility or car dealership that provides service.
\r\n\r\n
Other liquids can usually be dropped off at an HHW facility or cleanup event.
\r\n\r\n
Light Bulbs
\r\n\r\n
Fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) shouldn’t be mixed in with household trash.
\r\n\r\n
They contain small amounts of mercury.
\r\n\r\n
Drop these off at the nearest recycling facility that accepts CFLs.
\r\n\r\n
Some retailers, such as Lowe's and IKEA, also accept CFLs for proper recycling.
\r\n\r\n
Learn more about CFL recycling.
\r\n\r\n
Medicines
\r\n\r\n
Dispose of medications at your local cleanup event or HHW processing facility.
\r\n\r\n
If you do not have access to this type of event or facility, you can dispose of medicines in the following manner:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Mix medicines with dirt, kitty litter, or coffee grounds.
\r\n\t
Place in a plastic Ziploc bag and seal it.
\r\n\t
Throw the bag in your trash receptacle.
\r\n\t
Remove prescription labels and/or scratch out any personal information on the bottle to protect your privacy. Throw bottle(s) away.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Explosives
\r\n\r\n
Highly-flammable, combustible, and explosive wastes can be dangerous when mixed in with the general waste stream.
\r\n\r\n
Local laws dictate the proper way to dispose of wastes, like fuel, oil, fireworks, lighter fluid, matches, and others.
\r\n\r\n
Paint
\r\n\r\n
Wet paint must be dried before throwing it away.
\r\n\r\n
You can mix bulk amounts of paint with sand or similar material to dry it quickly.
\r\n\r\n
You can safely throw empty, dry paint cans into the trash or a rented dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
The one exception is if the paint is very old and may contain lead.
\r\n\r\n
It is unlikely this will be an issue considering lead paint was banned in 1978 (although lead-based paint was still sold for several years after that).
\r\n\r\n
If it’s a very old can of paint you need to dispose of, play it safe and bring it to a local recycling facility for proper disposal.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Recyclables
\r\n\r\n
Examples: paper, cardboard, plastics, metal
\r\n\r\n
Despite the slight downturn in recycling noted in recent years, access to recycling services is pretty extensive these days. For bulk amounts of recyclables, you have several options:
\r\n\r\n
Renting a dumpster is a quick and easy option for DIYers.
\r\n\r\n
Clean load it with recyclable materials only and the rental company may offer a discount.
\r\n\r\n
Junk removal is usually more expensive than renting a dumpster but much more convenient.
\r\n\r\n
Dropping recyclables off at a recycling center is the most cost-effective method for handling a low volume of recyclables.
\r\n\r\n
Posting an ad on Craigslist or Freecycle is another cheap and convenient way to get rid of recyclables.
\r\n\r\n
The potential downsides include having to wait potentially days or weeks (if ever) before finding someone to pick it up, and this method is generally limited to working well for valuable recyclables, such as metals.
\r\n\r\n
Bring scrap metals, like copper pipes, steel, brass fittings, iron, junk cars, etc., to a local metal scrap yard to get paid for your scraps.
\r\n\r\n
Some recycling facilities will even purchase bulk amounts of paper, cardboard, and plastics.
\r\n\r\n
For example, Padnos is a full-service recycler serving most of the State of Michigan and will purchase most types of recyclables (in bulk organic scraps can be composted.
\r\n\r\n
Not all food scraps are ideal for composting, however.
\r\n\r\n
Wastes that are excellent compost materials include:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Egg shells
\r\n\t
Fruit and vegetable scraps
\r\n\t
Coffee grounds and filters
\r\n\t
Clean paper and newspaper
\r\n\t
Vacuum residuals
\r\n\t
Hair and nail foods.
\r\n\r\n
If you have a bulk amount of food or organic waste to dispose of, discuss solutions with your waste hauler or a dumpster rental provider near you.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Tires
\r\n\r\n
Tires are banned for disposal in landfills in the majority of states within the United States.
\r\n\r\n
Instead, they can be recycled or reused.
\r\n\r\n
Bring old automobile tires to a tire retailer for recycling.
\r\n\r\n
There may be a small fee involved in some cases.
\r\n\r\n
Alternatively, you can sell or give away tires that still have some tread left.
\r\n\r\n
Recyclers, artists, and companies that work with rubber may also take them off your hands for free.
\r\n\r\n
Post an ad on Craigslist, Facebook, or Freecycle.org to get started.
\r\n\r\n
Junk removal companies also haul away tires, and this is a cost-effective and convenient option if you have a large number of tires to offload.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Asbestos, Mold, and Lead Paint
\r\n\r\n
Found on drywall, paint, roofing materials, and other building materials.
\r\n\r\n
These toxic substances are more prevalent in older homes or commercial buildings.
\r\n\r\n
Before starting a renovation, demolition, or construction project in an older home, be sure to have it tested for asbestos, mold, and lead paint.
\r\n\r\n
Asbestos
\r\n\r\n
Asbestos fibers are released into the air when affected material, such as drywall, is disturbed.
\r\n\r\n
Left alone, asbestos isn’t harmful.
\r\n\r\n
It’s during renovation or demolition that the asbestos is released into the air.
\r\n\r\n
Exposure can lead to lung cancer, mesothelioma, and lung problems.
\r\n\r\n
Mold
\r\n\r\n
Avoid dangerous mold by controlling moisture inside your home, repairing leaks, and cleaning up after natural disasters.
\r\n\r\n
Mold can often hide behind walls.
\r\n\r\n
If you spot a large area of it, it’s best to leave the removal to the professionals.
\r\n\r\n
In terms of disposal, a mold removal specialist will properly discard of the materials for you.
\r\n\r\n
Otherwise, you can dispose of small quantities of moldy materials in a dumpster if the debris is bagged or wrapped in plastic.
\r\n\r\n
Lead Paint
\r\n\r\n
How you dispose of lead paint debris depends upon how much of it is present and what your state’s laws are regarding disposal.
\r\n\r\n
If a sample of the debris contains less than 100 milligrams of lead per kilogram, you can typically dispose of it like regular municipal waste.
\r\n\r\n
If concentrations of lead are greater than that benchmark, special disposal procedures must be followed.
\r\n\r\n
It’s best to hire a lead paint abatement specialist to test for lead paint and to dispose of it if necessary.
\r\n\r\n
To summarize, asbestos materials always require special disposal procedures, while mold and lead paint tainted debris can be disposed of the same way you would any other C&D debris as long as the levels are low.
\r\n\r\n
Rent a dumpster for larger cleanups, or hire a junk hauler to come pick up smaller amounts of debris.
\r\n\r\n
Always inform the rental company or junk removal provider that the debris is tainted.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n<p typically hold HHW collection events once or twice per year where you can drop off chemicals and other hazardous wastes.
\r\n\r\n
Used motor oil can be brought to an oil change facility or auto parts store for proper recycling.
\r\n\r\n
Call ahead just to be sure.
\r\n\r\n
Never dispose of auto fluids or chemicals in the trashcan or a dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
Refer to <a phones, other electronic devices
\r\n\r\n
Electronic waste, or e-waste, is growing in the U.S., and proper disposal of this debris is often misunderstood.
\r\n\r\n
Most e-waste is not allowed in the general waste stream; it should be properly recycled to avoid heavy metal contamination and other potential hazards.
\r\n\r\n
Some states, including California and New York, have banned disposal of e-waste in landfills or waste-to-energy (WTE) facilities.
\r\n\r\n
Instead of throwing e-waste in the trash, it should go to the proper recycling facility.
\r\n\r\n
What to Do with Cost of Dumpster Rental and Junk Removal Services
\r\n\r\n
Dumpster rental and junk removal costs vary based on a number of factors, including the type and amount of debris, where you're located, the accessibility of your property, and who you hire.
\r\n\r\n
Your exact project cost will depend on these factors, and the best way to get an accurate estimate for your rental or project is to reach out to multiple service providers in your area for a quote.
\r\n\r\n
This not only ensures you get the best price but also allows you to choose the best company for the job, not just the cheapest.
\r\n\r\n
Location
\r\n\r\n
Do you live out in the country or far off the beaten path?
\r\n\r\n
If so, you can expect your dumpster rental or junk removal service to cost more due to the cost of travel incurred by the company.
\r\n\r\n
Cost of living and local disposal fees also play a large role in cost.
\r\n\r\n
For example, you’ll pay significantly more in New York City to rent a dumpster than you would in Memphis, TN based on the difference in cost of living.
\r\n\r\n
You'll also likely pay more for an apartment cleanout that requires hauling items up and down flights of stairs compared to the same size cleanout in the same zip code that is conveniently located on the first floor.
\r\n\r\n
Type of Debris
\r\n\r\n
Some service providers—dumpster and junk removal—charge differently for household wastes vs. construction and demolition (C&D) debris.
\r\n\r\n
C&D debris is often heavier, so it may end up costing more to haul away than general household trash.
\r\n\r\n
Amount of Debris
\r\n\r\n
The heavier the load, the more you’ll pay.
\r\n\r\n
For junk removal, costs rise as the volume of junk increases.
\r\n\r\n
A full truckload of junk, for example, costs more than a load taking up just half of the truck’s total capacity.
\r\n\r\n
Likewise, if you exceed the weight limit of your dumpster rental you'll likely be hit with overage fees.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
\r\n<h2 Phase 1 of Masdar City’s waste management plan will divert 50 percent of all waste away from landfills, or the equivalent of about 11,000 metric tons. The plan is to sort waste into three main streams: dry recyclables (i.e., cans and cardboard), wet recyclables (i.e., food scraps) and residuals (i.e., empty food containers). Dry recyclables will be shipped to the recycling center while wet recyclables will be composted and used for landscaping purposes. Other residual waste, including toxic waste, will be handled outside the city.
\r\n\r\n
The City of the Future?
\r\n\r\n
Is Masdar City the city of the future? It very well could be. However, it’s tough to say for sure until the city is fully developed and operational. This won’t happen until 2025 assuming everything stays on schedule. On paper, the city looks incredible and is amazingly eco-friendly. That said, there’s no way of knowing how accurate this will translate in real life. My best guess is that Masdar City succeeds in developing the most sustainable city in the world. However, it comes with a steep price – estimates put the price tag at around $18 to $19 billion.
\r\n\r\n
More Photos of Masdar City:
\r\n\r\n

\r\nImages via: Masdar City Official Website
\r\n","teaser":"
Smack dab in the middle of the desert is the location of one of the world’s greenest cities.
