If this applies to your situation, ask your service provider to provide you with a tax-deductible receipt. Depending on the content of your donation, your write off may be large enough to cover the cost of the junk removal service.
\n
\n\n
Getting Multiple Quotes
\n\n
It is always the best practice to get multiple quotes for a service to ensure that you’re getting the best price.
\n\n
Calling 3-5 junk removal companies in your area will give you a realistic expectation for what is considered reasonable pricing for the job you need completed.
\n\n
If you’re less worried about the financial aspect of your project and place a greater value on the timeframe that the job can be completed, calling several companies will also help you find someone with a schedule that fits your needs.
\n\n
Tipping Junk Removal Workers
\n\n

\n\n
If you’re wondering if you’re supposed to tip junk removal workers, you’re not the only one.
\n\n
As a service that isn’t regularly used by the average consumer, it can be something that is easily overlooked or debated on.
\n\n
Most people involved in the service industry rely on tips as a large part of their income.
\n\n
That being said, 10-20% is typical for excellent service.
\n\n
While tipping is not required for job completion, it’s a great way to reward those that took special care to make your life easier.
\n\n
\n
There are also plenty of other ways to show your appreciation for a job well done, like offering snacks or beverages for a project that takes several hours, leaving a positive review online to encourage others to book their services, and a simple “thank you” in appreciation for a job well done.
\n
\n
\n\n
\n
Contact a junk removal company near you
\n\n
\n
Read more about junk removal here:
\n\n
\n\t
How Much Does It Cost to Haul Away Junk?
\n\t
Junk Removal 101
\n\t
When Is It a Good Idea to Hire a Junk Removal Company?
\n\t
How to Choose the Best Junk Removal Company
\n
\n","teaser":"
Getting quotes from junk removal services is a fairly simple and straightforward process. style='text-align:center'>
\n\n
Step 1: Organize Documents
\n\n
When you’ve been tasked with the responsibility of being a loved one’s benefactor, the first thing that you should do is locate and organize all legal documents.
\n\n
A will (if present), vehicle titles, deeds, insurance policies, and a laundry list of other documents will need to be sorted through before any belongings are distributed.
\n\n
Step 2: Decide Which Items Will Be Kept
\n\n
The next step is to go through items with the family to disperse sentimental and valuable belongings.
\n\n
Step 3: Set Aside Valuables
\n\n
After you've decided what items will be kept, start making a pile of potential high-value items that need to be appraised or auctioned off.
\n\n
Step 4: Determine What Needs to Go
\n\n
At this point, you should have a pretty good idea of what needs to be removed from the property.
\n\n
It is likely that there are plenty of used and unwanted household items that do not have enough of a resale value to bother selling.
\n\n
Perhaps there are simply too many items to sort through and you’re overwhelmed at the prospect of even beginning to go through it all.
\n\n
This is where your local junk removal team comes in.
\n\n
Step 5: Shop Around for Junk Removal Services
\n\n
Research junk removal services in your area and get several different quotes.
\n\n
Not only does this help to determine who offers the best prices, but speaking with staff can be a good indicator of who is knowledgeable and professional within their industry.
\n\n
Step 6: Book Your Junk Removal
\n\n
Once you feel confident that you've found a reputable company that can accommodate your needs, book your junk removal services.
\n\n
The professionals will then be in charge of clearing out your loved one's home in a careful and thorough manner.
\n\n
Benefits of Hiring a Junk Removal Company
\n\n
Experienced junk removal companies, often marketed as estate cleanout services, understand how vulnerable a time cleaning out an estate can be and will offer as much, or as little, assistance as you deem necessary.
\n\n
They have the ability to empty out a large home full of unwanted items, donate salvageable items to local charities, recycle items that are accepted in local recycling programs, and dispose of the rest.
\n\n
If your needs are less involved, they will also show up to remove single pieces of furniture or appliances.
\n\n
In circumstances where there are a large number of electronics and appliances left in the home, hiring a junk removal company is especially helpful.
\n\n

\n\n
Disposing of most electronics and appliances in landfills is not only harmful to our planet, but it is also illegal in some areas and can get you fined.
\n\n
Local estate cleanout service providers are well versed in the most efficient and eco-friendly ways to donate or recycle these items.
\n\n
Being able to avoid the stress of having to find places that are accepting donations or locating <a href='https://www.hometowndumpsterrental.com/blog/big-list-of-recycling-organizations-helping-america-go-green' exhausting work.
\n\n
Whether you have help or not, you need to be sure that you’re in the physical shape to be doing manual labor and heavy lifting for days at a time.
\n\n
Even if you are in the physical shape to commit to this task, asking yourself if you’re up to it mentally might be a totally different story.
\n\n
Finally, licensed and bonded estate cleanout services catalog valuables to make the dispersion among family members a more organized and simplified process.
\n\n
Cataloging valuables is also helpful when organizing estate sales or auctions.
\n\n
The bottom line is, there are so many things to consider when dealing with a loved one’s estate. name='cost-factors'>Cost Factors
\n\n
There are several factors that will affect the price you're charged for your junk removal services, the biggest one being location.
\n\n
The cost of living (COL) in your area affects the landfill fees your junk removal company has to pay to dispose of your unwanted belongings, which means higher fees get passed on to you.
\n\n
Someone located in Dallas, TX, where the COL is 101.6, can likely expect to pay more for junk removal services than someone in Berlin, WI, where the COL is 75.3.
\n\n
Additionally, accessibility is a large factor in pricing as well.
\n\n
If the removal of your items requires hauling items down several flights of stairs, it's reasonable to expect a higher fee than someone who is located on the first floor.
\n\n
As a general rule, any accommodations that require additional labor will be reflected in the price you're charged to complete your job.
\n\n
Another example of a junk removal job that would require special care would be the removal of hazardous material, which is almost always more expensive to have hauled away.
\n\n
Booking junk removal services during a company's slow season might allow the opportunity for discounted prices.
\n\n
The busy season for junk removal services is usually spring and summer in most regions.
\n\n
Finally, the company you hire matters, too!
\n\n
It's always best practice to get at least 2-3 different quotes from locally-owned companies near you to make sure that you're getting a competitive interested in buying used items.
\n\n
If you don't have time to write listings, take photos, answer text messages or phone calls, and then drive to meet up with those that wish to purchase your listed items, donating your items instead is an easy way to unload items quickly.
\n\n
Donating items to places like Goodwill or The Salvation Army can pay off when tax season rolls around.
\n\n
If you itemize deductions on your federal tax return, you're entitled to claim a charitable deduction in the amount of the value of your donated items.
\n\n
Easier yet, setting items out to the road or listing them on marketplaces as free items is a quick and easy way to have your unwanted belongings removed from your property quickly and with minimal work on your end.
\n\n
Large DIY home or hoarding cleanups will require a dumpster rental in order to get rid of large quantities of trash at a time.
\n\n
The <a For example, a sofa removal job in Little Rock, AR would cost less compared to the same job in New York City.
\n\n
Location in relation to the junk hauling company — The distance a junk hauler must travel to get to your location may increase the price in order to compensate for fuel costs and time.
\n\n
Volume of furniture — Many junk removal companies base their fees on how much space your junk (furniture) takes up in their truck(s). For example, a few small dining room chairs would cost less than one large sofa because the chairs take up less volume.
\n\n
Ease of access to the furniture — The complexity of the job can influence the price. For instance, a junk hauler could very well charge more to carry a sofa down five flights of stairs than they would for hauling a sofa that's already at the curbside when the junk removal company arrives to pick it up.
\n\n
Find a way to mitigate these factors to save on your furniture disposal costs.
\n\n

\n\n
Tipping a Junk Removal Crew
\n\n

\n\n

\n\n
Should you tip the junk removal crew?
\n\n
You should never feel obligated to tip, but most companies do allow for tipping.
\n\n
One of the largest junk removal franchises in the U.S., 1-800-Got-Junk, says this about tipping:
\n\n
\n
If you think the crew did a great job and you’d like to recognize their hard work, tips are always appreciated.
\n
\n\n
On a more complex furniture removal job, tipping is definitely something to consider.
\n\n
A 10-20% tip is a good range to target for a complicated junk removal job well done.
\n\n
It’s also a good gesture to offer a beverage, or even snacks, to the workers for jobs that span several hours.
\n\n
Great service should always be rewarded!
\n\n

\n\n
Ask for Discounts
\n\n

\n\n
One simple way to score a nice discount on junk removal costs is to ask the junk hauler if they offer discounts for military/veterans, seniors, large haul-aways, first-time customers, or any other promotions they may be running.
\n\n
You can check the company’s website or Facebook page to see current offers, too.
\n\n
\n
If you’re ready to save on the disposal of your furniture, start here.
\n\n
Enter your city in the search box to find local dumpster rental and junk removal companies.
\n\n
Be sure to read customer reviews and call around to get multiple quotes.
\n
\n\n
\n
Contact a junk removal company near you
\n\n
\n
You may also like:
\n\n
\n\t
Comparing the Cost of Junk Removal to Dumpster Rental
\n\t
Complete Debris Removal Guide: How to Remove Any Type of Debris
\n\t
How to Choose the Best Junk Removal Company
\n
\n","teaser":"
Wondering how to get rid of old furniture? $100.
\r\n\r\n
If you have one or two items you’re getting rid of—like a TV, sofa, or mattress—you’ll probably be charged the minimum amount.
\r\n\r\n
For small cleanups, junk removal is typically the more cost-effective option.
\r\n\r\n
A junk removal company may remove a small garage-worth of items for $200 when it may cost you $250 to rent a 10 yard bin to do the Cost of Dumpster Rental and Junk Removal Services
\r\n\r\n
Dumpster rental and junk removal costs vary based on a number of factors, including the type and amount of debris, where you're located, the accessibility of your property, and who you hire.
\r\n\r\n
Your exact project cost will depend on these factors, and the best way to get an accurate estimate for your rental or project is to reach out to multiple service providers in your area for a quote.
\r\n\r\n
This not only ensures you get the best price but also allows you to choose the best company for the job, not just the cheapest.
\r\n\r\n
Location
\r\n\r\n
Do you live out in the country or far off the beaten path?
\r\n\r\n
If so, you can expect your dumpster rental or junk removal service to cost more due to the cost of travel incurred by the company.
\r\n\r\n
Cost of living and local disposal fees also play a large role in cost.
\r\n\r\n
For example, you’ll pay significantly more in New York City to rent a dumpster than you would in Memphis, TN based on the difference in cost of living.
\r\n\r\n
You'll also likely pay more for an apartment cleanout that requires hauling items up and down flights of stairs compared to the same size cleanout in the same zip code that is conveniently located on the first floor.
\r\n\r\n
Type of Debris
\r\n\r\n
Some service providers—dumpster and junk removal—charge differently for household wastes vs. construction and demolition (C&D) debris.
\r\n\r\n
C&D debris is often heavier, so it may end up costing more to haul away than general household trash.
\r\n\r\n
Amount of Debris
\r\n\r\n
The heavier the load, the more you’ll pay.
\r\n\r\n
For junk removal, costs rise as the volume of junk increases.
\r\n\r\n
A full truckload of junk, for example, costs more than a load taking up just half of the truck’s total capacity.
\r\n\r\n
Likewise, if you exceed the weight limit of your dumpster rental you'll likely be hit with overage fees.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
\r\n<h2 best for your situation.
\n\n
\n
\n\n

\n\n
Disposal Option #1: Rent a Dumpster
\n\n
When you’d prefer to clear out the junk/debris yourself, renting a dumpster is the way to go.
\n\n
It’s a simple process that involves calling the dumpster rental company, choosing a container size, having it dropped off at your property, filling it up, and having it hauled away.
\n\n
In some cases, such as having the dumpster dropped off on the side of a city street, you may also have to secure a permit.
\n\n
The dumpster rental company can help determine if this is necessary in your case.
\n\n
Roll-off dumpsters come in several capacities, including the most common container sizes: 10, 20, 30 and 40 yard bins.
\n\n
When renting a dumpster, “yards” is referring to the “cubic yard” capacity of the dumpster.
\n\n
For reference, a 10 yard dumpster is ideal for a garage or shed cleanout, while a 40 yard dumpster is the best solution for construction projects or complete re-roofing jobs.
\n\n
The dumpster rental company can help you choose the perfect container for the job.
\n\n

\n\n
\n
Find out which dumpster size is right for you:
\n\n
\n\t
10 yard
\n\t
20 yard
\n\t
30 yard
\n\t
40 yard
\n
\n\n
\n
Many dumpster rental companies are focused on eco-friendly waste removal, so most of the debris you toss in the dumpster will head to recycling centers.
\n\n
This is particularly true for “clean loads” containing all of the same recyclable materials, such as concrete or asphalt shingles.
\n\n
Dumpsters are heavy, particularly when filled up with junk and debris.
\n\n
There are two main things to consider when it comes to dumpster weight: protecting your driveway/property and avoiding exceeding the weight limit.
\n\n
Guard Against Damage
\n\n
A roll-off dumpster can easily weigh several tons once filled with debris.
\n\n
For example, a single layer of shingles torn off a 1,500-square-foot roof as part of a re-roofing project can easily weigh two tons (4,000 lbs).
\n\n
This amount of weight can wreak havoc on a concrete driveway, yard, patio, or asphalt.
\n\n
Many dumpster rental companies will place plywood or 2x4s beneath the dumpster when dropping it off to protect against damage.
\n\n
Weight Restrictions
\n\n
Nearly every rental company enforces weight restrictions on the load.
\n\n
These restrictions are determined based on local regulations and landfill dumping fees.
\n\n
If your load exceeds the weight restriction set by the rental company, you may incur additional charges.
\n\n
Be sure to thoroughly understand the rental company’s weight restrictions.
\n\n
By discussing in detail the type of debris you plan to get rid of, the rental company can estimate the total weight of the load before you fill the container.
\n\n
To be safe, always over-estimate to ensure you don’t go over.
\n\n
Disposal Option #2: Hire a Junk Removal Service
\n\n
Like renting a dumpster, a junk disposal companies can help with spring/fall home cleanings, estate cleanouts, yard waste, construction/demolition debris, or general rubbish removal.
\n\n
The difference is that the junk removal company takes care of all the heavy lifting for you.
\n\n

\n\n
Hiring a junk removal company is just as easy as renting a dumpster.
\n\n
You simply call, schedule, pay, and enjoy your clutter-free space.
\n\n
The cost is determined by the type and volume of junk or debris to be hauled away (more details below).
\n\n
The junk removal company will give you a free on-site estimate for projects bigger than picking up a few pieces of furniture, for example.
\n\n
Junk removal companies are pros at removing bulky, heavy items (furniture, appliances, etc.) and large quantities of debris (demolition debris, yard waste, etc.).
\n\n
They work quickly but are also focused on making sure no damage is inflicted to your property in the process.
\n\n
The majority of junk removal companies recycle a portion of each load.
\n\n
They may also donate gently used items to local charitable organizations and give you a tax-deductible receipt for it.
\n\n
When Renting a Dumpster Makes Sense
\n\n
\n\t
You want the flexibility to load the container over time (a typical rental includes up to 7 days)
\n\t
You don't mind loading the junk or debris yourself to save a little money on labor
\n\t
You have at least 7 cubic yards or more of debris (roll-off containers typically start at 10 cubic yards, so if you only have 3 or 4 cubic yards of material, you're paying for more dumpster than you need)
\n
\n\n
When Hiring a Junk Removal Company Makes Sense
\n\n
\n\t
You want someone else to load your debris
\n\t
You want the junk to be removed and out of sight quickly
\n\t
You only have a few large, bulk trash items (junk removal service is typically cheaper than renting a dumpster in this situation)
\n\t
You have a lot of debris in a central spot and are willing to pay a little extra for someone else's labor to load and haul the junk
\n
\n\n
Dumpster Rental Costs vs Junk Removal Service Costs
\n\n
The cost of renting a dumpster or for hiring a junk removal service varies based on several factors, including your location, volume of junk/debris, duration of service, and other factors.
\n\n
In general, junk removal services cost more than renting a dumpster because of the added labor costs involved.
\n\n
The one exception to this rule is for smaller cleanups, such as moving some furniture out or getting rid of a refrigerator.
\n\n
Here’s a hypothetical example of how this works:
\n\n
\n
You have an old couch and a few boxes of junk in the garage you want thrown out. Your local dumpster rental company offers a 10-yard dumpster rental for $250, which would do the trick. However, a local junk removal service quotes you their minimum pickup charge of $125 to haul it all away for you. In this case, junk removal is the better choice.
\n
\n\n
In the example above, the volume of junk wasn’t enough to make renting a dumpster the more affordable option.
\n\n
However, a dumpster rental would be the more cost-effective option for larger debris removal projects, such as a whole-home cleanout or roofing project.
\n\n
Below you’ll find costs associated with renting a dumpster and hiring a junk removal company.
\n\n
These are national averages based on a sample set compiled by Hometown.
\n\n
The figures below are meant to give you a general idea of what it costs for these services.
\n\n
Costs can vary depending upon where you live, additional disposal fees, permits, and the scope of the debris removal project.
\n\n
\n
Our dumpster rental guide is a great resource for first-time renters. heavy and bulky, it’s a job better left to the professionals.
\n\n
Junk removal companies have all the tools necessary to safely dispose of larger items.
\n\n
Appliances and furniture of our grandparents' era tend to be extra heavy and bulky, so junk removal services are especially useful for estate cleanouts.
\n\n
If you've ever attempted to move an old freezer or entertainment center up a flight of stairs, you know what we're talking about.
\n\n
The amount of stuff you need to get rid of is also something to consider.
\n\n
In circumstances involving large cleanout projects, like foreclosure or hoarding situations, renting a dumpster will be the most economical option.
\n\n
Most home cleanouts can be accommodated with a 20 yard or 30 yard roll-off container, which will likely cost you somewhere between $350-$500 for a seven-day rental.
\n\n
But a dumpster is only helpful if you have the time and manpower to handle the cleanout yourself.
\n\n
If the overall scale of the cleanout is simply too much for you to handle, hiring a junk removal service is definitely the best option.
\n\n
Project Duration
\n\n

\n\n
For new <a always be the ideal solution.
\n\n
Renting a dumpster is the better option in cases where you’ll be removing junk over a period of several days or weeks.
\n\n
If you’re in a situation where If you're not sure, just call a hometown trash hauler and describe your project and debris. Most are very helpful. When it comes to dumpster sizes, you may be better off renting a dumpster that is a little too large rather than too small. If you rent a dumpster that is too small, it ends up costing you double to have the first dumpster picked up and a new one delivered.
\r\n\t
Call to learn more - Call one or more of the preferred dumpster rental services that serve your area. Ask about their pricing, standard rental period, weight included in the price, materials not allowed in the trash container, and other rental policies.
\r\n\t
Schedule delivery and arrange payment - Schedule a date for delivery of a temporary dumpster to your home, job site, or place of business. It's recommended that you have your dumpster delivered the day before you actually need it.
\r\n\t
Request pickup - When your finished loading the trash or debris into the roll off dumpster, call the company back and they will pick the dumpster up and haul it away to the landfill, transfer station, or recycling center.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Dumpster rental costs
\r\n\r\n
The cost of renting a dumpster varies widely based on your location. The national average cost of renting a 10 yard dumpster is $300, while the national average cost of renting a 40 cubic yard container is nearly $500 for one-weekek rental. What you pay depends primarily on landfill fees in your area, the size of the container you need, and the dumpster company you select. To get the best price on a dumpster, get quotes from multiple rental companies.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Find a Dumpster Rental Company Near You
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Most companies quote one flat rate fee for delivery, pickup, and disposal (though some add delivery charges separately). The rental rate is usually for a standard period of time (for example... up to 7 days) and includes a certain amount of weight (for example... up to 3 tons). If you exceed this weight allowance, you will be subject to overage fees typically ranging from $50 to $100 per ton that you go over.
\r\n\r\n
When comparing dumpster rental prices between two companies:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Compare apples to apples (or 20 yard dumpsters to other 20 yard dumpsters... dumpster size can have a big impact on price).
\r\n\t
Ask how much time is included in the price and what it will cost if you need the container for a longer period
\r\n\t
Ask how much weight is included in the price and how much 'per ton' it will cost if the dumpster is over weight.
\r\n\t
Ask if any additional fees that may be applied for any reason
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Extra charges may apply if you need the roll off dumpster for longer than a provider's standard rental period. This is typically a per day fee (ie $5 or $10 per day), but some dumpster services will negotiate with you up front if you need it for slightly longer than their standard period.
\r\n\r\n
Pay particular attention to the amount of weight included in your price if you are disposing of heavy construction debris like bricks, cement, roofing shingles, or demolition debris. If you're renting a trash dumpster for cleaning out your home of miscellaneous household debris, you will typically not have to worry about 'over weight' fees because the debris is lighter.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Click Here to Find Reputable Dumpster Rental Providers Near You
\r\n","teaser":"
Learn how to rent a dumpster and be free of your debris. unwanted junk or debris, and each has its place.
\r\n\r\n
Recycling/Reusing
\r\n\r\n
This is the best possible option because it's great for the environment and your wallet.
\r\n\r\n
Always recycle, reuse, or donate materials when you can.
\r\n\r\n
If this is not an option, then it's time to start considering the next disposal options.
\r\n\r\n
Renting a Dumpster
\r\n\r\n
Dumpsters come in a wide range of sizes, from 3 cubic yard dumpster bags to full-size 40 cubic yard construction dumpsters.
\r\n\r\n
It’s an ideal solution for construction, demolition, house cleanouts, roofing, yard waste disposal, and recycling in bulk.
\r\n\r\n
Junk Removal
\r\n\r\n
This is a great option for disposal of e-waste, tough-to-dispose-of wastes, and bulk amounts of debris.
\r\n\r\n
It’s a convenient option—they handle all the removal and disposal for you.
\r\n\r\n
It can become costly for larger cleanups, so it’s something to consider when deciding between renting a dumpster and hiring a junk hauling service.
\r\n\r\n
Hauling Waste Yourself
\r\n\r\n
If you have a truck and/or trailer, hauling the debris yourself to a local landfill is always an option.
\r\n\r\n
The advantage of this method is the lower cost of disposal compared to renting a roll-off, although the tradeoff is less convenience and speed.
\r\n\r\n
The time it takes you to drive and drop off the debris at the nearest landfill can be substantial.
\r\n\r\n
Also, hazardous materials require a permit to haul, so do your due diligence as to the laws in your area regarding the types of waste you are allowed to haul and the types of debris accepted at local landfills (e.g., some accept only C&D debris and not household trash).
\r\n\r\n
Household hazardous waste (HHW) facilities safely process and recycle potentially toxic wastes, such as e-waste, household cleaners, paint, chemicals, medicines, and liquids.
\r\n\r\n
Some communities host HHW events on an annual or biannual basis.
\r\n\r\n
Find the nearest HHW drop off location online by visiting Earth911.com.
\r\n\r\n
And now, let’s discuss specific types of wastes and how to properly get rid of each type.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Types of Junk, Waste, and Debris
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Household Trash and General Waste
\r\n\r\n
Examples: household garbage, furniture, broken toys, packaging materials
\r\n\r\n
This category of waste includes anything you’d typically put in your waste bin.
\r\n\r\n
Generally, this category of waste is taken care of via your waste hauler’s curbside collection service.
\r\n\r\n
However, there are situations that require additional means, like hoarding situations, foreclosure cleanups, moving, and special events that generate a lot of trash.
\r\n\r\n
When you have more than your curbside roll cart can handle, a roll-off container works great for bulk amounts of household trash.
\r\n\r\n
Alternatively, hiring a junk removal company to pick up the trash for you is a convenient disposal method, too, and it may be a more cost-effective option for smaller jobs (less than a few cubic yards of waste).
\r\n\r\n
You could also haul these wastes to the landfill yourself if you live within close proximity of one.
\r\n\r\n
Disposal of appliances containing Freon, paints, liquids, lead-acid batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, and other household hazardous wastes (HHWs) require special handling.
\r\n\r\n
These wastes shouldn’t be mixed in with your household garbage.
\r\n\r\n
Contact your city’s solid waste department to find the nearest HHW facility, or visit the city’s website for more information.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Construction & Demolition (C&D) Debris
\r\n\r\n
Examples: lumber, drywall (sheetrock), wood flooring, carpeting, renovation debris, roofing debris
\r\n\r\n
Residential and commercial construction or demolition projects require the use of a dumpster, junk removal company, or driving the debris to the landfill yourself.
\r\n\r\n
Some U.S. cities require C&D debris to be dropped off at dedicated construction and demolition landfill facilities where it is separated and recycled.
\r\n\r\n
Concrete
\r\n\r\n
Like asphalt, this is a very heavy, dense debris that is best disposed of in a roll-off dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
Most dumpster rental companies require concrete to be separated from other wastes, and it must be loaded in a smaller container, such as a 10 yard bin, to ensure it does not become too heavy of a load for the roll-off truck to handle.
\r\n\r\n
Roofing Shingles
\r\n\r\n
This is a heavy debris that is generally loaded in its own dumpster and not in mixed loads.
\r\n\r\n
Shingles are recycled in most municipalities.
\r\n\r\n
Wood/Lumber
\r\n\r\n
Wood has a potential to be reused if salvaged properly.
\r\n\r\n
Reclaiming wood and selling or donating it is one way to cut down on disposal costs for a project.
\r\n\r\n
Carpeting
\r\n\r\n
A junk removal company offers the most convenient disposal solution in this case.
\r\n\r\n
Renting a dumpster or having your waste hauler pick it up are also valid options.
\r\n\r\n
Many waste haulers require the carpeting to be cut down to a specified length (e.g., 4 ft. lengths), so that may add to the inconvenience of going this route.
\r\n\r\n
Wood/Laminate Flooring
\r\n\r\n
This material is salvageable in many cases.
\r\n\r\n
This would, again, help cut down on disposal costs.
\r\n\r\n
If reclaiming the wood isn’t an option, other cost-effective solutions include renting a roll-off or hiring a junk removal company to pick it up.
\r\n\r\n
Siding
\r\n\r\n
Certain types of siding, such as cedar, are highly desirable, and people will often take it off your hands.
\r\n\r\n
This is great for cutting down on disposal costs.
\r\n\r\n
Simply posting a listing on Craigslist is an easy way to accomplish getting rid of cedar or wood siding.
\r\n\r\n
Vinyl siding is typically disposed of in a dumpster or picked up by a junk removal company.
\r\n\r\n
A dumpster is generally the more cost-effective option for a whole-house Junk haulers charge a minimum fee of anywhere from $50 to $125, so expect to be charged at least that amount for the appliance removal.
\r\n\r\n
A dumpster works well for disposal of a whole home's worth of appliances, such as during a major renovation project or demolition.
\r\n\r\n
Choose a bigger dumpster than you think you need.
\r\n\r\n
Why? Most roll-off containers have rounded bottoms, while most appliances are bulky and square.
\r\n\r\n
So while you may have 10 cubic yards worth of appliances (think of 10 kitchen stoves, which approximately equals 10 cubic yards), the appliances will consume greater than 10 cubic yards worth of space inside a dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
In this example, a 20 yard bin may be the better choice.
\r\n\r\n
Save on disposal costs by donating working appliances to local charitable organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity.
\r\n\r\n
Some locations may even pick them up for free, so be sure to ask!
\r\n\r\n
Alternatively, you can sell appliances that are still in good shape via Craigslist, Facebook, or by other means.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Household Hazardous Wastes (HHWs)
\r\n\r\n
Examples: lead-acid batteries, fluorescent bulbs, household cleaners, motor oil, chemicals
\r\n\r\n
This class of wastes should never be mixed in with the general waste stream, so avoid putting household hazardous wastes in the waste bin, dumpsters, burning it, burying it, or using any other unsafe disposal method. Doing so can taint drinking water, harm local wildlife, produce unsafe crops at local farms, and pollute the air.
\r\n\r\n
Dispose of HHWs by dropping them off at a local HHW processing facility.
\r\n\r\n
Some communities also host annual or biannual HHW pickup events where you can drop off a wide range of hazardous wastes found in your home.
\r\n\r\n
Junk removal companies, and some dumpster rental providers, will accept HHWs if you discuss it beforehand.
\r\n\r\n
There may or may not be additional fees for handling/hauling of hazardous materials—it depends upon the company and local laws governing HHW handling.
\r\n\r\n
Find a household hazardous waste recycler near you.
\r\n\r\n
Here’s a quick breakdown of common types of HHWs:
\r\n\r\n
Batteries
\r\n\r\n
Common A, AA, AAA, D, and similar dry-cell batteries can be thrown away with your trash.
\r\n\r\n
However, car batteries and other larger batteries need to be properly recycled.
\r\n\r\n
Liquids
\r\n\r\n
This includes motor oil, antifreeze, household cleaners, fuel, and other toxic/flammable liquids.
\r\n\r\n
Motor oil can be safely dropped off for recycling at a local oil change facility or car dealership that provides service.
\r\n\r\n
Other liquids can usually be dropped off at an HHW facility or cleanup event.
\r\n\r\n
Light Bulbs
\r\n\r\n
Fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) shouldn’t be mixed in with household trash.
\r\n\r\n
They contain small amounts of mercury.
\r\n\r\n
Drop these off at the nearest recycling facility that accepts CFLs.
\r\n\r\n
Some retailers, such as Lowe's and IKEA, also accept CFLs for proper recycling.
\r\n\r\n
Learn more about CFL recycling.
\r\n\r\n
Medicines
\r\n\r\n
Dispose of medications at your local cleanup event or HHW processing facility.
\r\n\r\n
If you do not have access to this type of event or facility, you can dispose of medicines in the following manner:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Mix medicines with dirt, kitty litter, or coffee grounds.
\r\n\t
Place in a plastic Ziploc bag and seal it.
\r\n\t
Throw the bag in your trash receptacle.
\r\n\t
Remove prescription labels and/or scratch out any personal information on the bottle to protect your privacy. Throw bottle(s) away.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Explosives
\r\n\r\n
Highly-flammable, combustible, and explosive wastes can be dangerous when mixed in with the general waste stream.
\r\n\r\n
Local laws dictate the proper way to dispose of wastes, like fuel, oil, fireworks, lighter fluid, matches, and others.
\r\n\r\n
Paint
\r\n\r\n
Wet paint must be dried before throwing it away.
\r\n\r\n
You can mix bulk amounts of paint with sand or similar material to dry it quickly.
\r\n\r\n
You can safely throw empty, dry paint cans into the trash or a rented dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
The one exception is if the paint is very old and may contain lead.
\r\n\r\n
It is unlikely this will be an issue considering lead paint was banned in 1978 (although lead-based paint was still sold for several years after that).
\r\n\r\n
If it’s a very old can of paint you need to dispose of, play it safe and bring it to a local recycling facility for proper disposal.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Recyclables
\r\n\r\n
Examples: paper, cardboard, plastics, metal
\r\n\r\n
Despite the slight downturn in recycling noted in recent years, access to recycling services is pretty extensive these days. For bulk amounts of recyclables, you have several options:
\r\n\r\n
Renting a dumpster is a quick and easy option for DIYers.
\r\n\r\n
Clean load it with recyclable materials only and the rental company may offer a discount.
\r\n\r\n
Junk removal is usually more expensive than renting a dumpster but much more convenient.
\r\n\r\n
Dropping recyclables off at a recycling center is the most cost-effective method for handling a low volume of recyclables.
\r\n\r\n
Posting an ad on Craigslist or Freecycle is another cheap and convenient way to get rid of recyclables.
\r\n\r\n
The potential downsides include having to wait potentially days or weeks (if ever) before finding someone to pick it up, and this method is generally limited to working well for valuable recyclables, such as metals.
\r\n\r\n
Bring scrap metals, like copper pipes, steel, brass fittings, iron, junk cars, etc., to a local metal scrap yard to get paid for your scraps.
\r\n\r\n
Some recycling facilities will even purchase bulk amounts of paper, cardboard, and plastics.
\r\n\r\n
For example, Padnos is a full-service recycler serving most of the State of Michigan and will purchase most types of recyclables (in bulk amounts).
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Food Scraps and Organic Waste
\r\n\r\n
Food and organic scraps can be composted.
\r\n\r\n
Not all food scraps are ideal for composting, however.
\r\n\r\n
Wastes that are excellent compost materials include:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Egg shells
\r\n\t
Fruit and vegetable scraps
\r\n\t
Coffee grounds and filters
\r\n\t
Clean paper and newspaper
\r\n\t
Vacuum residuals
\r\n\t
Hair and nail clippings
\r\n\t
Dirt, soil, grass clippings, dead leaves, and small tree limbs
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
<a foods.
\r\n\r\n
If you have a bulk amount of food or organic waste to dispose of, discuss solutions with your waste hauler or a dumpster rental provider near you.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Tires
\r\n\r\n
Tires are banned for disposal in landfills in the majority of states within the United States.
\r\n\r\n
Instead, they can be recycled or reused.
\r\n\r\n
Bring old automobile tires to a tire retailer for recycling.
\r\n\r\n
There may be a small fee involved in some cases.
\r\n\r\n
Alternatively, you can sell or give away tires that still have some tread left.
\r\n\r\n
Recyclers, artists, and companies that work with rubber may also take them off your hands for free.
\r\n\r\n
Post an ad on Craigslist, Facebook, or Freecycle.org to get started.
\r\n\r\n
Junk removal companies also haul away tires, and this is a cost-effective and convenient option if you have a large number of tires to offload.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Asbestos, Mold, and Lead Paint
\r\n\r\n
Found on drywall, paint, roofing materials, and other building materials.
\r\n\r\n
These toxic substances are more prevalent in older homes or commercial buildings.
\r\n\r\n
Before starting a renovation, demolition, or construction project in an older home, be sure to have it tested for asbestos, mold, and lead paint.
\r\n\r\n
Asbestos
\r\n\r\n
asbestos isn’t harmful.
\r\n\r\n
It’s during renovation or demolition that the asbestos is released into the air.
\r\n\r\n
Exposure can lead to lung cancer, mesothelioma, and lung problems.
\r\n\r\n
Mold
\r\n\r\n
Avoid dangerous mold by controlling moisture inside your home, repairing leaks, and cleaning up after natural disasters.
\r\n\r\n
Mold can often hide behind walls.
\r\n\r\n
If you spot a large area of it, it’s best to leave the removal to the professionals.
\r\n\r\n
In terms of disposal, a mold removal specialist will properly discard of the materials for you.
\r\n\r\n
Otherwise, you can dispose of small quantities of moldy materials in a dumpster if the debris is bagged or wrapped in plastic.
\r\n\r\n
Lead Paint
\r\n\r\n
How you dispose of lead paint debris depends upon how much of it is present and what your state’s laws are regarding disposal.
\r\n\r\n
If a sample of the debris contains less than 100 milligrams of lead per kilogram, you can typically dispose of it like regular municipal waste.
\r\n\r\n
If concentrations of lead are greater than that benchmark, special disposal procedures must be followed.
\r\n\r\n
It’s best to hire a lead paint abatement specialist to test for lead paint and to dispose of it if necessary.
\r\n\r\n
To summarize, asbestos materials always require special disposal procedures, while mold and lead paint tainted debris can be disposed of the same way you would any other C&D debris as long as the levels are low.
\r\n\r\n
Rent a dumpster for larger cleanups, or hire a junk hauler to come pick up smaller amounts of debris.
\r\n\r\n
Always inform the rental company or junk removal provider that the debris is tainted.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n<p typically hold HHW collection events once or twice per year where you can drop off chemicals and other hazardous wastes.
\r\n\r\n
Used motor oil can be brought to an oil change facility or auto parts store for proper recycling.
\r\n\r\n
Call ahead just to be sure.
\r\n\r\n
Never dispose of auto fluids or chemicals in the trashcan or a dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
Refer to <a allowed in the general waste stream; it should be properly recycled to avoid heavy metal contamination and other potential hazards.
\r\n\r\n
Some states, including California and New York, have banned disposal of e-waste in landfills or Option
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Junk removal companies charge a minimum amount for any junk removal, with the average around $75 to $100.
\r\n\r\n
If you have one or two items you’re getting rid of—like a TV, sofa, or mattress—you’ll probably be charged the minimum amount.
\r\n\r\n
For small cleanups, junk removal is typically the more cost-effective option.
\r\n\r\n
A junk removal company may remove a small garage-worth of items for $200 when it may cost you $250 to rent a 10 yard bin to do the loading yourself.
\r\n\r\n
In this case, junk removal is the cheaper (and less back-breaking) option.
\r\n\r\n
Below are a few real-world examples of junk removal costs around the country class=\"content-box-yellow\">\r\n
Remember: Every project is different, so calling at least two dumpster rental and two junk removal companies to compare pricing is the best way to determine the most economical debris removal solution.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Find a local junk removal company
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
What Affects the Cost of Dumpster Rental and Junk Removal Services
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
\r\n<h2 Phase 1 of Masdar City’s waste management plan will divert 50 percent of all waste away from landfills, or the equivalent of about 11,000 metric tons. The plan is to sort waste into three main streams: dry recyclables (i.e., cans and cardboard), wet recyclables (i.e., food scraps) and residuals (i.e., empty food containers). Dry recyclables will be shipped to the recycling center while wet recyclables will be composted and used for landscaping purposes. Other residual waste, including toxic waste, will be handled outside the city.
\r\n\r\n
The City of the Future?
\r\n\r\n
Is Masdar City the city of the future? It very well could be. However, it’s tough to say for sure until the city is fully developed and operational. This won’t happen until 2025 assuming everything stays on schedule. On paper, the city looks incredible and is amazingly eco-friendly. That said, there’s no way of knowing how accurate this will translate in real life. My best guess is that Masdar City succeeds in developing the most sustainable city in the world. However, it comes with a steep price – estimates put the price tag at around $18 to $19 billion.
\r\n\r\n
More Photos of Masdar City:
\r\n\r\n

\r\nImages via: Masdar City Official Website
\r\n","teaser":"
Smack dab in the middle of the desert is the location of one of the world’s greenest cities.
