If they've paid off their house and buy something smaller, they'll have more cash in the bank to live off of.
\r\n\t
Lower monthly expenses like utilities, home insurance, maintenance, taxes, etc.
\r\n\t
Having a smaller floor plan improves ease of access and makes upkeep take less time.
\r\n\t
Being surrounded by other neighbors who are in a similar phase of life.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Being mentally prepared to encourage your parent to push through their emotions (and doing so patiently) is an important aspect to downsizing that has nothing to do with the physical labor most people think of when they start preparing for this type of project.
\r\n\r\n
Create a Plan
\r\n\r\n
Sitting down with your parent and creating a plan of attack before you dive in will help you be as efficient as possible.
\r\n\r\n
Go through every room in the home and rank them based off the amount of clutter and junk they have and how much will need to be tossed or donated.
\r\n\r\n
Give each room a rating of 1-5, with 1 being the least cluttered to 5 being the most.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Having a list of every room in the house with a visual of how much work each room will require will help you know where to start and help you stay on track.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Take a look at the types of items that are taking up space in your parent's home and the condition they are in.
\r\n\r\n
Plan on separating the stuff you'll be getting rid of into different piles so that the disposal aspect of this project is simple and straight-forward.
\r\n\r\n
We recommend creating a pile of items that can be donated and a pile of items that need to be thrown away or yourself.
\r\n\r\n
Downsizing your parent's home is a huge project and one that will likely take days, if not weeks, to complete.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Assuming that you're a working person with a family or demanding life of your own, it will be easy to become overwhelmed by this project if you try to go at it alone.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Because of the sensitive nature of this process, it's important to keep your cool and remain patient and understanding with your parent if there are parts of the decluttering and downsizing project that are difficult for them.
\r\n\r\n
Being emotionally available for them during this time will be next to impossible if you're also responsible for all of the manual labor and logistics of cleaning out their home.
\r\n\r\n
Any family members or friends that are willing to help you physically pack up rooms or keep your parent busy during this process is help that you should seek out or happily accept if it is offered.
\r\n\r\n
If you are unable to create a small team of helpers on your own, consider hiring professional help.
\r\n\r\n
Junk removal companies are especially helpful when you would like to get the home cleanout done as quickly as possible.
\r\n\r\n
They can pack up each room for you while you help direct and guide them, or they come and remove the items you want to get rid of after you've gone through all the rooms and separated them yourself.
\r\n\r\n
Hire Disposal Services
\r\n\r\n
Even if you plan on having an estate sale or garage sale of sorts to unload some of the stuff taking up space in your parent's home, there will still likely be a lot of stuff that needs to be tossed or donated.
\r\n\r\n
We mentioned that junk removal services are a great way to get rid of items that are no longer wanted, but did you know that they can donate items on your behalf, too?
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Junk removal companies are notorious for separating items and donating/recycling whenever possible.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Most junk removal services are environmentally conscious and make their services more attractive by their ethical disposal practices.
\r\n\r\n
Another disposal option if you have mass amounts of stuff to throw away is to rent a temporary dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
Having a <a href=\"https://www.hometowndumpsterrental.com/blog/5-essential-tips-when-renting-a-roll-off-dumpster\" title=\"5 Essential Tips When Renting a residential dumpsters are roll-off containers and trailer dumpsters.
\r\n\r\n
Roll-off containers typically come in a wider variety of sizes, but the larger sizes are most often used for construction/demolition projects or hoarding situations.
\r\n\r\n
So for home cleanout projects, both types of dumpster styles will be suitable.
\r\n\r\n
Both roll-off containers and trailer dumpsters feature an open top (without a lid) to make tossing in your junk and trash easy.
\r\n\r\n
Roll-off containers sit on the ground and many have a swinging side door, which makes walking in heavy or bulky items very convenient. This makes them an attractive option for those whose elderly parents have old furniture or appliances to get rid of.
\r\n\r\n
Trailer dumpsters sit on rubber wheels, so without a ramp, you'll have to have the strength and manpower to lift your large and bulky items.
\r\n\r\n
Because of their rubber wheels, trailer dumpsters are often chosen by those who are concerned about driveway damage.
\r\n\r\n
While reputable dumpster companies can easily place roll-off containers on a driveway without damage, the rubber wheels on a trailer dumpster greatly minimizes the chances of an accident happening. This makes them an attractive option for those who have recently installed a new driveway in preparation to sell their parents' estate.
\r\n\r\n
The wheels on a trailer dumpster also make moving and maneuvering it very easy to do for anyone with a vehicle hitch.
\r\n\r\n
There are different benefits for both types of temporary dumpsters, but either will work great for a home cleanout.
\r\n\r\n
More info:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
<a href=\"https://www.hometowndumpsterrental.com/blog/benefits-of-renting-a-trailer-dumpster\" Dumpster Styles
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Dumpster Sizes
\r\n\r\n
One of the reasons that roll-off containers are so versatile is because they come in various container sizes.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Deciding which dumpster size to rent for your home cleanout is an important step to avoid costly mistakes, and dumpster rental companies can help you choose the best one if you're unsure.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Renting a dumpster that is too small means that you may have to rent a second dumpster, instantly doubling costs, or it could mean that you'll go over your weight limit and get hit with overage fees.
\r\n\r\n
On the contrary, renting a dumpster that's way too large means that you're spending more than necessary, although when in doubt, we always recommend going with the larger dumpster when you're deciding between two sizes.
\r\n\r\n
Both roll-off and trailer dumpsters are measured in cubic yards.
\r\n\r\n
The most common sizes for roll-off dumpsters are 10 yards, 20 yards 30 yards and 40 yards, while trailer dumpsters most often come with 10 yard, 15 yard, and 20 yard capacities.
\r\n\r\n
Experienced dumpster rental companies do a great job of recommending the right dumpster size for your project as long as you provide accurate, detailed information about the contents you'll be putting in.
\r\n\r\n
We've also written many articles that explain dumpster sizes in greater detail, with examples of project types and the sizes that best suit them, to help give you a visual.
\r\n\r\n
Read more Plan
\r\n\r\n
The first step to a successful basement cleanout is to decide what your end goal is.
\r\n\r\n
Do you want to get rid of accumulated junk that you no longer need or use, or is your intention to organize the items you're storing?
\r\n\r\n
For many people, it's a combination of both.
\r\n\r\n
Maybe you're about to begin renovations in the basement and need to remove everything in the area.
\r\n\r\n
How much time can you dedicate to this project each day?
\r\n\r\n
Will you dedicate a whole weekend to the project or would you prefer to pace yourself and do a little bit each day?
\r\n\r\n
Do you have a deadline that your basement needs to be cleaned out by or is this project not an urgent matter in your life?
\r\n\r\n
Knowing what your goals are and determining an ideal timeline will help you create the most realistic expectations and efficient strategy.
\r\n\r\n
Sort Through All Items in Sections
\r\n\r\n
It's easy to get off track or feel overwhelmed by a large project when you're jumping from one area to another.
\r\n\r\n
Unfortunately, it's all too common to begin a large cleanout project, feel overwhelmed halfway through, and end up putting it off even further.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Mentally dividing your basement into different sections and only working on one area at a time is one of the fastest ways to start seeing results, which will only serve as further motivation to complete the project.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Another approach is to start with the biggest area or section first, that way each remaining section will get easier and faster as you go.
\r\n\r\n
Closets tend to be a big host for unorganized clutter, so if you don't know where to start, start there.
\r\n\r\n
Take advantage of the fact that you'll be removing items from closets, shelves, storage space, etc. by dusting and cleaning as you go.
\r\n\r\n
Every time you have a fully cleared cabinet or shelf, wipe it down with your cleaning product of choice.
\r\n\r\n
Untouched spaces like cluttered basements are the perfect landing ground for dust, cobwebs, and other unsavory debris, so cleaning as you organize will bring you the most rewarding results.
\r\n\r\n
Organize Your Remaining Items
\r\n\r\n
The easiest way to begin organizing a large amount of items is to create a pile for items you plan on keeping, items you plan on donating or selling, items you can recycle, and items that need to be thrown in the trash.
\r\n\r\n
After you've done that, you can bag up your trash and recyclables (be sure to keep them separated) and then begin organizing the items you plan on keeping.
\r\n\r\n
When putting away the items you plan on keeping in the basement, keep in mind that accessibility is key.
\r\n\r\n
Store the items that you use most frequently in easy-to-access areas, like the front of a closet or cabinet.
\r\n\r\n
Seasonal items should be boxed and labeled for easy storage and to protect them from accumulating dust and moisture.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Find junk removal services near you
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Disposal with Junk Removal Services
\r\n\r\n
After you've put your basement back together, you're left with a pile of items you no longer want.
\r\n\r\n
Items that can be donated can be bagged and hauled to local to a local charity, like Goodwill, The Salvation Army, or any other local shelters or charities that accept the items you're donating.
\r\n\r\n
If your pile of trash or recyclables can fit into a couple bags, you can likely thrown them in with your municipal trash and recycling bins.
\r\n\r\n
If your basement cleanout produces a significant amount of garbage, or a mixture of salvageable items and trash, then junk removal services are the ideal solution.
\r\n\r\n
Get Quotes from Local Junk Removal Companies
\r\n\r\n
If you've never used a junk removal service before, getting the best price is simple!
\r\n\r\n
The best strategy is to get multiple quotes from locally-owned companies, and the best way to do that is with Hometown.
\r\n\r\n
By entering your zip code and answering a few questions about your basement cleanout, you'll be shown qualified junk removal companies that service your area.
\r\n\r\n
You'll be able to read more about each company and the services they offer, read verified reviews from real customers, and request junk removal quotes - all for free!
\r\n\r\n
We make it fast and easy to find local disposal solutions that won't break the bank.
\r\n\r\n
Most junk removal companies will need to come on-site before they can provide an accurate estimate.
\r\n\r\n
Once you've scheduled your appointment to get an estimate for your basement cleanout, the junk removal company will send a team (typically of two people) to your location on your appointment date to assess a few things and provide you with a quote.
\r\n\r\n
During your quote appointment, the junk removal company will determine...
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
The amount of the junk you have and how much space it will take up in their truck/trailer
\r\n\t
The best route for removing the item(s) and loading them into their truck/trailer
\r\n\t
The type of junk being removed and whether it will need to be donated, recycled, or thrown out
\r\n\t
Approximately how long it will take the junk removal crew to complete the work
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Once the junk removal company has a better understanding of what your junk removal project will require, they'll be able to provide you with an accurate quote.
\r\n\r\n
If you're satisfied with the price they quote you, the junk removal team will get to work right away to remove the junk, or they'll schedule the removal on a future date if necessary.
\r\n\r\n
If you don't like the quote they give you, you don't have to move forward with their services.
\r\n\r\n
As previously mentioned, we recommend getting more than one quote for your junk removal project if you can.
\r\n\r\n
Being able to compare customer service, pricing, and availability will make it easier to ensure you hire the right junk removal company.
\r\n\r\n
Say Goodbye to Your Junk
\r\n\r\n
Junk removal services are trained to quickly load up items you no longer want and haul them away to the appropriate facility.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Having your items piled up and ready to be picked up will be the cheapest option, but junk removal companies can also assist with the actual cleanout process.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Junk removal companies typically deploy simple manpower to carry items from your home or business out to their truck/trailer.
\r\n\r\n
If you have appliances or extremely heavy items to remove from your basement, like a large sofa or pool table for example, the junk removal crew will utilize dollies, moving straps, and other equipment to get the job done safely without damaging any walls or doors in the process.
\r\n\r\n
In most cases, they'll sweep the area clean after removing your item(s) as well.
\r\n\r\n
Pay Your Bill
\r\n\r\n
Once your basement cleanout is completed, before leaving your home or business, the junk removal company will provide you with an invoice.
\r\n\r\n
Oftentimes, they'll take a card or cash on the spot.
\r\n\r\n
In some cases, you can call into the office to pay the invoice over the phone.
\r\n\r\n
Company Disposes of Your Items Properly
\r\n\r\n
Once loaded onto their truck, the junk removal company will then transport your item(s) to the appropriate place for proper disposal.
\r\n\r\n
For example, if you have items that can be donated, the service company will take it to a local charity. (Ask for a receipt of donation if they do not provide one to you.)
\r\n\r\n
If the item can't be donated but can be recycled, the company will take it to a local recycling facility.
\r\n\r\n
If they can't donate or recycle an item, only then will they take the item(s) to the landfill.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Get free junk removal quotes near you
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Learn more:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
How Much It Costs to Clean Out a Cluttered Basement
\r\n\t
How to Negotiate the Best Junk Removal Price
\r\n
\r\n","teaser":"
Cleaning out and organizing your basement can seem like a daunting task, but with a plan in place, it doesn't have to be. some companies are willing to price match.
\r\n\r\n
When researching junk removal companies that provide home cleanout services in your area, keep in mind that locally-owned and operated companies tend to offer the most competitive pricing and personable services.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Getting quotes from local junk removal companies in your area is easy with Hometown.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
By entering your zip code and answering a few short questions about your home cleanout, you'll be shown reputable companies near you.
\r\n\r\n
All quote requests are fast, free of charge, and you are not obligated to hire.
\r\n\r\n
It's best practice to get at least 2-3 different quotes to not only ensure you get the best price, but that you're getting quality customer service and the availability needed to fit your busy schedule.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Rent a Dumpster for DIY
\r\n\r\n
The cheapest way to complete a home cleanout project is to rent a temporary dumpster and do all the hard labor yourself.
\r\n\r\n
There are many different dumpster styles and sizes available today and a reputable dumpster company will be able to help you pick the best option for your particular home cleanout project.
\r\n\r\n
Roll-off dumpsters feature a swinging side door that makes them the perfect option when you have large, heavy, or bulky items to get rid of.
\r\n\r\n
Trailer dumpsters are a great choice when you're working with limited parking space and/or need to be able to easily move your dumpster throughout the rental period.
\r\n\r\n
The standard duration of a dumpster rental is 5-7 days, but most companies can provide shorter or longer rental periods to accommodate each customers' individual needs.
\r\n\r\n
It's very important to understand all the terms and conditions of your dumpster rental agreement in order to avoid any additional fines or fees.
\r\n\r\n
Going over your weight limit, overfilling your container, and disposing of prohibited material are all circumstances that could lead to you paying more for your dumpster rental than the initial quote you were given.
\r\n\r\n
Just like junk removal, it's important to get multiple quotes when searching for a dumpster rental in your area. There is no organization or cleaning done by you beforehand and they take care of it all start to finish, including even sweeping up afterwards to remove any remaining dirt or debris. Full service garage cleanout services tend to run between $400-$800.
\r\n\r\n
There are less involved services offered by junk removal companies if you don't need to clean out your entire garage and would like to save some money. Piling up your unwanted garage items at the end of your driveway for quick and easy pick-up and loading will cost less than having a company go into your garage and sort through an unorganized mess. The cost of this type of junk removal service will mainly depend on the amount of junk you have to get rid of, but you can expect it to run anywhere from $300-$600.
\r\n\r\n
When given an estimate for junk removal services, like a garage cleanout, it is generally all-inclusive and includes the cost for picking up the materials, loading it onto the truck, and disposing of it properly.
\r\n\r\n
Additional fees can apply in some cases, for example:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Handling/Disposal of hazardous materials
\r\n\t
Volume of waste exceeds the originally stated amount
\r\n\t
Handling/Disposal of very heavy item(s)
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
One-site junk removal estimates are the most accurate and the preferred way for most junk removal companies to provide quotes because it allows them to see the job in person and have a thorough understanding of the work required.
\r\n\r\n
When getting garage cleanout prices from junk removal companies, be sure to ask what is included in the cost. Knowing this information upfront can save you a headache later.
\r\n\r\n
If you find that junk removal services are out of your budget and are looking for a cheaper way to clean out your garage and dispose of large quantities of unwanted items, renting a dumpster is a great alternative.
\r\n\r\n
Dumpster rentals come in all different sizes, but the most popular size for a garage cleanout is a 10 yard dumpster, which costs factors that influence what you’ll pay for junk removal services include...
\r\n\r\n
Geographic Location
\r\n\r\n
Where you live plays a role in junk removal project costs, both in terms of the cost of living and how far you live from the junk removal company.
\r\n\r\n
Volume of Junk
\r\n\r\n
Many junk haulers charge based on how much space the items take up in the truck or dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
As a hypothetical example, a company may charge $200 for utilizing 1/4 of the truck’s load capacity, $300 for 1/2 the truck, $400 for 3/4 of the truck, and so on.
\r\n\r\n
Debris Type
\r\n\r\n
Hazardous materials and toxic waste will require special handling which will increase the cost, if they're accepted at all.
\r\n\r\n
For example, tires or mattresses may require special handling and disposal.
\r\n\r\n
Some junk removal companies will not accept HAZMATs, while others may charge additional fees for removal.
\r\n\r\n
Common hazardous materials found in a garage:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Paint (dry paint is usually OK)
\r\n\t
Fuel and Oil
\r\n\t
Aerosols
\r\n\t
Stains and Varnishes
\r\n\t
Tires
\r\n\t
Liquids
\r\n\t
Flammables and Explosives
\r\n\t
Construction Debris Containing Mold or Asbestos
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Be sure to check with your junk removal provider to understand their policies on toxic or hazardous material removal.
\r\n\r\n
Learn More: <a and Won't Take
\r\n\r\n
Job Site Access
\r\n\r\n
If it’s difficult for the junk removal company to gain access to the garage, like if they cannot park the truck close by, then more labor may be required to complete the job.
\r\n\r\n
More labor hours lead to higher costs for the customer.
\r\n\r\n
How to Save on Garage Cleanout Costs
\r\n\r\n
There are a few easy things you can do to ensure you're getting the best value for your garage cleanout.
\r\n\r\n
<a companies to be sure the price is at or below market value.
\r\n\r\n
If you have the time and ability to sell, donate, or recycle some of the items yourself, reducing the total volume of the load will save you some money.
\r\n\r\n
Make pick-up as easy as possible for the junk removal workers, whether by setting aside a pile or making a clear path for the crew.
\r\n\r\n
Reducing the workload for the junk removal company can mean time savings which are then passed onto you.
\r\n\r\n
If many of the items have value, you may be able to negotiate a better rate using the value of the items to offset some of the junk removal cost.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
<a Don’t start a project that you don’t think you can’t finish in a reasonable amount of time. For instance, don’t plan to do a complete reorganization, disposal, and new storage installation unless you have several weekends to get the job done. A job left unfinished defeats the whole purpose of the cleanup.
\r\n\t
Write down your plan and/or add it to your calendar to ensure you have a clear schedule to complete the project. Although it may seem inconsequential, this simple step helps hold you to the project and reduces the chance of putting it off another weekend, or two, or…
\r\n\t
Be detailed in creating your organizational and disposal plans. Some rental providers offer slightly smaller containers, as well.
\r\n\r\n
The national average cost of a 10 yard dumpster is $250 for a one-week rental.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
TIP: 1 cubic yard is about the same volume as a standard 3 ft. x 3 ft. x 3 ft. kitchen stove. Use this as a visual reference when estimating your disposal needs.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
RELATED: Guide to renting 'mini' dumpsters
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Fastest Disposal Method
\r\n\r\n
A faster alternative to renting a dumpster is to hire a junk removal company to clean out the garage for you.
\r\n\r\n
This is a convenient solution for people who don’t mind spending a little more to get the job done quicker.
\r\n\r\n
Expect to pay at least a couple hundred dollars (for a small garage) or more to have a junk removal company clean out the garage for you.
\r\n\r\n
For Small Amounts of Junk
\r\n\r\n
For garage cleanouts involving a smaller amount of junk and debris disposal, you can get by without renting a dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
Other ways of getting rid of junk in the garage:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Put it in the 'Free' section of Craigslist.
\r\n\t
Add a little to your curbside waste collection each week. (Note: Many waste haulers don’t allow construction/demolition debris or hazardous materials/liquids.)
\r\n\t
Sell it. Some materials may have some value, such as scrap metal. Usable items, machines, tools, or other items of value can be sold online, in a garage sale, or donated to a local charitable organization.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Next Steps...
\r\n\r\n
First Option: Complete Renovation
\r\n\r\n
If the goal of this cleanup is to completely reorganize, install new shelving/cabinetry, or in any way renovate the garage, the next step is to completely empty out the garage.
\r\n\r\n
Remove all items not attached to the garage. You may even wish to remove some items that are attached if you plan to replace them.
\r\n\r\n
It’s often best to start with an empty canvas.
\r\n\r\n
Alternative Option: Basic Cleanout / Organization
\r\n\r\n
Generally speaking, there isn't usually a need to remove everything from the garage, although that’s something you’ll need to determine based on what you want to accomplish with this project.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Organization
\r\n\r\n
Once the garage is cleaned out, it’s time to put it back together—making sure it’s in an organized fashion.
\r\n\r\n
Keep functionality in mind when organizing a garage. For example, don’t bury the air compressor behind bikes or underneath toys if it’s something you use often.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Accessibility is key. Make it easier to get to things you use frequently. It makes more sense to put things you only use occasionally in the harder to reach areas.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
You can really optimize the accessibility of items in your garage by strategically installing hooks, hangers, cabinets, overhead storage, and shelving.
\r\n\r\n
These storage solutions can help create additional floor space for easier storage of larger items, such as lawnmowers, snow blowers, bikes, chest freezers, etc.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
TIP: Utilize vertical space (hooks, pegboards, etc.) and overhead storage systems to maximize the square footage and storage capacity in your garage.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Proven Garage Organization Ideas
\r\n\r\n
Gardening Tools
\r\n\r\n
Most hand-operated gardening tools can be hung on the wall using inexpensive hooks, hangers, or durable plastic hanging systems.
\r\n\r\n
Sports Equipment and Balls
\r\n\r\n
Have a large bin dedicated to sports equipment and outdoor toys (or one bin for each).
\r\n\r\n
Purchase a ball storage system that you can hang on the wall.
\r\n\r\n
These are great for basketballs, footballs, dodge balls, etc. – smaller wall-hung ball storage systems are ideal for baseballs, hockey pucks, and tennis balls.
\r\n\r\n
Bikes
\r\n\r\n
If you use bikes frequently, position them on the garage floor near the opening for easy access without having to remove the car(s), lawn equipment, etc.
\r\n\r\n
If bikes are rarely used, or it’s during the winter months, hang the bikes using simple ceiling hangers you can get at any home improvement store.
\r\n\r\n
Shoes/Boots
\r\n\r\n
A shoe rack or wall-hung shoe holder is great to organize shoes and boots in the garage.
\r\n\r\n
Shoe clutter is annoying and can become hazardous. (Ever walk into a dark garage only to twist your ankle on a stray shoe? Not fun.)
\r\n\r\n
Tools
\r\n\r\n
Keep tools together in a corner or dedicated work area in the garage.
\r\n\r\n
If you don’t have a workbench, consider installing one.
\r\n\r\n
You can store larger tools beneath the workbench and smaller tools on the wall or atop the bench.
\r\n\r\n
Hazmats
\r\n\r\n
This includes chemicals, cleaners, automobile fluids, fuel, batteries, and other hazardous materials.
\r\n\r\n
It’s a very good idea to invest in a lockable hazardous materials storage cabinet.
\r\n\r\n
While these flame-resistant metal cabinets can run several hundred to more than a thousand dollars, the price is well worth the investment.
\r\n\r\n
These cabinets last forever and make your garage a much safer place.
\r\n\r\n
Small Items
\r\n\r\n
It’s not ideal to use your garage as a long-term storage solution—attics, storage units, or outbuildings work better for this purpose—but if you must, be sure to keep everything contained.
\r\n\r\n
Rather than using cardboard boxes, use large plastic stackable containers with tightly closing lids.
\r\n\r\n
Cardboard will soak up water and other fluids in the event of a spill or flooding, while plastic containers stack easily and better protect the contents inside.
\r\n\r\n
These bins are available at most home improvement stores, Costco, and Amazon.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Finishing Touches
\r\n\r\n
When you have the garage gutted out or near-empty, it’s a perfect time to add special touches that make it unique or increase functionality.
\r\n\r\n
Below are some garage storage ideas and finishing touches to help make your garage one-of-a-kind.
\r\n\r\n
Flooring
\r\n\r\n
There are several garage flooring options available.
\r\n\r\n
Durable garage floor tiles are great if you use your garage as an auto repair or workshop space.
\r\n\r\n
These tiles are non-slip and easy to clean.
\r\n\r\n
Another option is epoxy flooring.
\r\n\r\n
It offers a great look similar to that in many auto repair shops, and it provides a more non-slip surface compared to bare concrete, plus it’s easy to clean.
\r\n\r\n
However, it must be reapplied about every two years to maintain a clean, new appearance.
\r\n\r\n
It’s an easy job, but it does require you empty out the garage again.
\r\n\r\n
Garage paint is a cost-efficient option that provides increased durability and a cleaner appearance compared to bare concrete.
\r\n\r\n
You can add a slip-resistant aggregate (similar to fine sand) to the paint to make the surface a bit more non-slip.
\r\n\r\n
Painting the garage floor will need to be reapplied periodically to keep up its appearance.
\r\n\r\n
Walls
\r\n\r\n
Garage wall panels are great because they allow for hooks to be installed just about anywhere.
\r\n\r\n
You can customize the setup now and in the future as needed.
\r\n\r\n
There are several different types and manufacturers on the market, so it’s not difficult to find an option that suits most budgets.
\r\n\r\n
Mount storage cabinets on the walls strategically to improve the functionality of the garage.
\r\n\r\n
Plan carefully, and be sure to take the end result into consideration.
\r\n\r\n
For example, don’t mount a cabinet in an area where it would block a walkway when vehicles are parked inside.
\r\n\r\n
Lighting
\r\n\r\n
Improve the lighting of your garage using 4 ft. or 8 ft. energy-efficient fluorescent lights.
\r\n\r\n
These are great for hot or cold climates, and it helps provide daylight color lighting ideal for any type of garage setup.
\r\n\r\n
Alternative lighting solutions include LED rope lighting, recessed lighting, puck lights, under-cabinet lighting, and custom light installations.
\r\n\r\n
Colored accent lighting is great for putting a unique spin on your garage, especially if you plan to trick it out as a bar or living space.
\r\n\r\n
It can also be useful for adding a soft glow to accent steps and other tripping hazards when the main lights are off.
\r\n\r\n
Lighting is an inexpensive garage upgrade that can significantly boost the functionality, safety, and appeal of garage interiors.
\r\n\r\n
Overhead Storage
\r\n\r\n
Adding overhead storage is an excellent way to boost the storage capacity of your garage without losing any square footage.
\r\n\r\n
Find DIY plans online, purchase a kit at a home improvement store, or hire someone to do the work for you.
\r\n\r\n
The cost of adding overhead storage in a garage is generally inexpensive. The cost of wood is the most expensive part of the project.
\r\n\r\n
There are also slightly more expensive pre-fab units available made from aluminum or other durable materials.
\r\n\r\n
With a simple bolt-on unit, you can easily add more than 100 square feet of usable storage in your garage.
\r\n\r\n
The Ultimate Garage
\r\n\r\n
Ever thought of converting your garage into a more livable space, such as a man cave, she shed, workshop, bar, or another fantasy garage setup?
\r\n\r\n
I think we all have! If space and budget allow, consider a conversion. See some awesome examples of garage makeovers below.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Garage Storage Ideas
\r\n\r\n
Many have already been mentioned, including overhead storage, wall-mount units, and cabinetry.
\r\n\r\n
The storage solution ideal for your situation depends on your specific needs.
\r\n\r\n
That’s why the initial planning stage of garage cleanout and organization projects is so important.
\r\n\r\n
Avoid adding storage just to add storage. If you don’t need it, don’t add it.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
There is such thing as too much storage. It’s common to have the tendency to fill storage areas with stuff—whether it’s stuff we need or not. Due to the all-inclusive level of service, junk removal can become costly for larger cleanups, so it’s something to consider when choosing whether you should rent a dumpster or hire a junk removal service.
\r\n\r\n
Learn more:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Comparing the Cost of Junk Removal to Dumpster Rental
\r\n\t
Understanding Junk Removal Quotes
\r\n\t
How to Choose the Best Junk Removal Company
\r\n\t
What Junk Removal Companies Will and Won't Take
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Hauling Waste Yourself
\r\n\r\n
If you have a truck and/or trailer, hauling the debris yourself to a local landfill may be an option. The average cost to haul waste yourself is less than the average cost to rent a roll-off dumpster, but the trade-off is it's less convenient and takes longer. The time it takes you to drive and drop off the debris at the nearest landfill can be substantial depending on your location. Also, if you need to dispose of hazardous materials, it will require a permit to haul, so be sure to research the laws in your area regarding the types of waste you are allowed to haul and the types of debris accepted at local landfills. (Some accept only C&D debris and not household trash). Household hazardous waste (HHW) facilities safely process and recycle potentially toxic wastes, such as e-waste, household cleaners, paint, chemicals, medicines, and liquids. Some communities host HHW events on an annual or biannual basis, or you can find your nearest HHW drop-off location at Earth911.com.
\r\n\r\n
Find out more: Cost of Hauling Waste Yourself vs Renting a Dumpster
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Find dumpster rental companies or junk removal services near me
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Types of Junk, Waste, and Debris
\r\n\r\n
The waste and junk disposal methods discussed above are not always an option for everyone in every situation. Generally, this category of waste is taken care of via your waste hauler’s curbside collection service. However, there are multiple situations that require additional means, like hoarding situations, foreclosure cleanups, moving, and special events that generate a lot of trash. When you have more than your curbside roll cart can handle, a roll-off container works great for bulk amounts of household trash.
\r\n\r\n
Alternatively, hiring a junk removal company to pick up the trash for you is a convenient disposal method, too, and it may be a more cost-effective option for smaller jobs (less than a few cubic yards of waste). You could also haul these wastes to the landfill yourself if you live within close proximity of one. Disposal of appliances containing Freon, paints, liquids, lead-acid batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, and other household hazardous wastes (HHWs) require special handling. These wastes shouldn’t be mixed in with your household garbage. Contact your city’s solid waste department to find the nearest HHW facility, or visit the city’s website for more information.
\r\n\r\n
Construction & Demolition (C&D) Debris
\r\n\r\n
Examples: concrete, shingles, lumber, carpeting, flooring, siding, metal, renovation debris
\r\n\r\n
Residential and commercial construction or demolition projects typically require the use of a dumpster, though hiring a junk removal company or driving the debris to the landfill yourself may be an option if there is a relatively small amount of debris. Some U.S. cities require C&D debris to be dropped off at dedicated construction and demolition landfill facilities where it is separated and recycled.
\r\n\r\n
Concrete
\r\n\r\n
Concrete and asphalt are both very heavy, dense debris that are best disposed of in a roll-off dumpster. Most dumpster rental companies require concrete to be separated from other wastes, and it must be \"clean loaded\" in a smaller container, such as a 10 yard bin, to ensure it does not become too heavy of a load for the roll-off truck to handle.
\r\n\r\n
Roofing Shingles
\r\n\r\n
This is another heavy debris, so shingles are generally loaded in a separate dumpster and not in mixed loads. Shingles are recycled in most municipalities.
\r\n\r\n
Wood/Lumber
\r\n\r\n
Wood has a potential to be reused if salvaged properly. Reclaiming wood and selling or donating it is one way to cut down on disposal costs for a project.
\r\n\r\n
Carpeting
\r\n\r\n
A junk removal company offers the most convenient disposal solution for carpet disposal. Renting a dumpster or having your waste hauler pick it up are also valid options. Many waste haulers require the carpeting to be cut down to a specified length, like 4 ft. lengths, so that may add to the inconvenience of going this route.
\r\n\r\n
Flooring
\r\n\r\n
Flooring material is salvageable in many cases. This would, again, help cut down on disposal costs. If reclaiming the wood isn’t an option, other cost-effective solutions include renting a roll-off or hiring a junk removal company to pick it up.
\r\n\r\n
Siding
\r\n\r\n
Certain types of siding, such as cedar, are highly desirable, and people will often take it off your hands. Simply posting a listing on Craigslist is an easy way to accomplish getting rid of cedar or wood siding while also cutting down on disposal costs. Vinyl siding is typically disposed of in a dumpster or picked up by a junk removal company. A dumpster is generally the more cost-effective option for a whole-house siding replacement project.
\r\n\r\n
Kitchen/Bathroom Renovation
\r\n\r\n
Examples: cabinets, tubs, sinks, toilets, countertops, floors
\r\n\r\n
Much of this material can be reclaimed. Other materials can be disposed of in a roll-off container or by a junk removal service. Most waste haulers do not accept renovation debris via curbside service, though some will pick it up for an additional fee.
\r\n\r\n
Metals
\r\n\r\n
Bulk amounts of steel, aluminum, copper, and other metals should be recycled, as metal is a valuable commodity. You can eliminate disposal costs and make a few bucks by dropping off metal scraps at a local scrap yard. If you cannot haul the metals yourself, some metal recyclers may be able to pick it up on-site, or you can post an ad on Craigslist for free pick-up.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Find dumpster rental companies or junk removal providers near you
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Yard Waste
\r\n\r\n
Examples: tree limbs, bush trimmings, grass clippings
\r\n\r\n
Being that it’s an organic waste, yard debris is best disposed of by composting, but dumpsters and junk removal companies are good options, too, as dumpster companies and junk removal service providers will drop off the yard wastes at the proper facility.
\r\n\r\n
Note: Most waste haulers don’t allow yard debris mixed in with general waste.
\r\n\r\n
Heavy yard wastes, like downed trees/logs, are best handled by professionals who have the right equipment to safely load and haul away such debris. Most junk removal companies have the right equipment to take on this type of project.
\r\n\r\n
Consider starting a compost pile if you have the space to do so. Composting is an easy and inexpensive disposal option for yard debris, plus it produces nutrient-rich compost ideal for farming, landscaping, and flower gardens.
\r\n\r\n
Be sure you know the laws regarding yard waste disposal in your area. Some cities have made yard debris composting mandatory. In this case, you’d need to have the debris dropped off at the proper composting facility. It may not be accepted at the municipal landfill, so be sure to do your due diligence. Search your city’s solid waste authority website or give them a call to learn more.
\r\n\r\n
Appliances
\r\n\r\n
Examples: kitchen stove (range), microwave, washer, dryer, dishwasher, refrigerator
\r\n\r\n
Hiring a junk removal company for removal of one or several appliances is a quick and cost-effective method of removal. Junk haulers charge a minimum fee of anywhere from $50 to $125, so expect to be charged at least that amount for the appliance removal.
\r\n\r\n
A dumpster works well for disposal of a whole home's worth of appliances, such as during a major renovation project or demolition. Choose a bigger dumpster than you think you need. Why? Most roll-off containers have rounded bottoms, while most appliances are bulky and square. So while you may have 10 cubic yards worth of appliances (10 kitchen stoves equals approximately 10 cubic yards), the appliances will consume greater than 10 cubic yards worth of space inside the dumpster. In this example, a 20 yard bin may be the better choice.
\r\n\r\n
Save on disposal costs by donating working appliances to local charitable organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity. Some locations may even pick them up for free, so be sure to ask! Alternatively, you can sell appliances that are still in good shape via Craigslist, Facebook, or by other means.
\r\n\r\n
Household Hazardous Wastes (HHWs)
\r\n\r\n
Examples: lead-acid batteries, fluorescent bulbs, household cleaners, motor oil, chemicals
\r\n\r\n
This class of wastes should never be mixed in with the general waste stream, so avoid putting household hazardous wastes in the waste bin, dumpsters, burning it, burying it, or using any other unsafe disposal method. Doing so can taint drinking water, harm local wildlife, produce unsafe crops at local farms, and pollute the air. Dispose of HHWs by dropping them off at a local HHW processing facility. Some communities also host annual or biannual HHW pickup events where you can drop off a wide range of hazardous wastes found in your home.
\r\n\r\n
Junk removal companies and some dumpster rental providers will accept HHWs if you discuss it beforehand. There may or may not be additional fees for handling/hauling of hazardous materials—it depends upon the company and local laws governing HHW handling. Find a household hazardous waste recycler near you.
\r\n\r\n
Here’s a quick breakdown of common types of HHWs:
\r\n\r\n
Batteries
\r\n\r\n
Common A, AA, AAA, D, and similar dry-cell batteries can be thrown away with your trash. However, car batteries and other larger batteries need to be properly recycled.
\r\n\r\n
Liquids
\r\n\r\n
This includes motor oil, antifreeze, household cleaners, fuel, and other toxic/flammable liquids. Motor oil can be safely dropped off for recycling at a local oil change facility or car dealership that provides service. Other liquids can usually be dropped off at an HHW facility or cleanup event.
\r\n\r\n
Light Bulbs
\r\n\r\n
Fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) shouldn’t be mixed in with household trash. They contain small amounts of mercury. Drop these off at the nearest recycling facility that accepts CFLs. Some retailers, such as Lowe's and IKEA, also accept CFLs for proper recycling. Learn more about CFL recycling.
\r\n\r\n
Medicines
\r\n\r\n
Dispose of medications at your local cleanup event or HHW processing facility.
\r\n\r\n
If you do not have access to this type of event or facility, you can dispose of medicines in the following manner:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Mix medicines with dirt, kitty litter, or coffee grounds.
\r\n\t
Place in a plastic Ziploc bag and seal it.
\r\n\t
Throw the bag in your trash receptacle.
\r\n\t
Remove prescription labels and/or scratch out any personal information on the bottle to protect your privacy. Throw bottle(s) away.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Explosives
\r\n\r\n
Highly-flammable, combustible, and explosive wastes can be dangerous when mixed in with the general waste stream. Local laws dictate the proper way to dispose of wastes, like fuel, oil, fireworks, lighter fluid, matches, and others.
\r\n\r\n
Paint
\r\n\r\n
Wet paint must be dried before throwing it away. You can mix bulk amounts of paint with sand or similar material to dry it quickly. You can safely throw empty, dry paint cans into the trash or a rented dumpster. The one exception is if the paint is very old and may contain lead. It is unlikely this will be an issue considering lead paint was banned in 1978 (although lead-based paint was still sold for several years after that). If it’s a very old can of paint you need to dispose of, play it safe and bring it to a local recycling facility for proper disposal.
\r\n\r\n
Recyclables
\r\n\r\n
Examples: paper, cardboard, plastics, metal
\r\n\r\n
Despite the slight downturn in recycling noted in recent history, access to recycling services is pretty extensive these days. For bulk amounts of recyclables, you have several options. Renting a dumpster is a quick and easy option for DIYers. Clean load it with recyclable materials only and the rental company may offer a discount. Junk removal is usually more expensive than renting a dumpster but is also much more convenient. Dropping recyclables off at a recycling center is the most cost-effective method for handling a low volume of recyclables. Posting an ad on Craigslist or Freecycle is another cheap and convenient way to get rid of recyclables. The potential downsides include having to wait potentially days or weeks (if ever) before finding someone to pick it up, and this method is generally limited to working well for valuable recyclables, such as metals.
\r\n\r\n
Bring scrap metals, like copper pipes, steel, brass fittings, iron, junk cars, etc., to a local metal scrap yard to get paid for your scraps. Some recycling facilities will even purchase bulk amounts of paper, cardboard, and plastics. For example, Padnos is a full-service recycler serving most of the State of Michigan and will purchase most types of recyclables (in bulk amounts).
\r\n\r\n
Food Scraps and Organic Waste
\r\n\r\n
Food and organic scraps can be composted. Not all food scraps are ideal for composting, however. Wastes that are excellent compost materials include:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Egg shells
\r\n\t
Fruit and vegetable scraps
\r\n\t
Coffee grounds and filters
\r\n\t
Clean paper and newspaper
\r\n\t
Vacuum residuals
\r\n\t
Hair and nail clippings
\r\n\t
Dirt, soil, grass clippings, dead leaves, and small tree limbs
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
See a complete list of compostable items and learn how to get started. Do not compost meats, cheeses/dairy, plastics, fats, dirty paper/paper towels, breads, dog/cat wastes (grass-eating animal wastes are ok), or processed foods. If you have a bulk amount of food or organic waste to dispose of, discuss solutions with your waste hauler or a dumpster rental provider near you.
\r\n\r\n
Read more: Let’s Talk About Food Waste
\r\n\r\n
Tires
\r\n\r\n
Tires are banned for disposal in landfills in the majority of states within the United States. Instead, they can be recycled or reused. Bring old automobile tires to a tire retailer for recycling. There may be a small fee involved in some cases. Alternatively, you can sell or give away tires that still have some tread left. Recyclers, artists, and companies that work with rubber may also take them off your hands for free. Post an ad on Craigslist, Facebook, or Freecycle.org to get started. Junk removal companies also haul away tires, and this is a cost-effective and convenient option if you have a large number of tires to offload.
\r\n\r\n
Find out more:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
How to Get Rid of Unwanted Tires
\r\n\t
60+ Ingenious Ways to Reuse Scrap Tires
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Asbestos, Mold, and Lead Paint
\r\n\r\n
Found on drywall, paint, roofing materials, and other building materials. These toxic substances are more prevalent in older homes or commercial buildings. Before starting a renovation, demolition, or construction project in an older home, be sure to have it tested for asbestos, mold, and lead paint.
\r\n\r\n
Asbestos
\r\n\r\n
When left alone, asbestos isn’t harmful. But once asbestos fibers are released into the air, they become a danger. Renovation and demolition is when asbestos is most likely to be released into the air. Exposure can lead to lung cancer, mesothelioma, and lung problems.
\r\n\r\n
Keep reading: How to Determine If Your Home Contains Asbestos
\r\n\r\n
Mold
\r\n\r\n
Avoid dangerous mold by controlling moisture inside your home, repairing leaks, and cleaning up after natural disasters. Mold can often hide behind walls. If you spot a large area of it, it’s best to leave the removal to the professionals. In terms of disposal, a mold removal specialist will properly discard of the materials for you. Otherwise, you can dispose of small quantities of moldy materials in a dumpster if the debris is bagged or wrapped in plastic.
\r\n\r\n
Learn more: How to Safely Remove Mold from the Home
\r\n\r\n
Lead Paint
\r\n\r\n
How you dispose of lead paint debris depends upon how much of it is present and what your state’s laws are regarding disposal. If a sample of the debris contains less than 100 milligrams of lead per kilogram, you can typically dispose of it like regular municipal waste. If concentrations of lead are greater than that benchmark, special disposal procedures must be followed. It’s best to hire a lead paint abatement specialist to test for lead paint and to dispose of it if necessary. To summarize, asbestos materials always require special disposal procedures, while mold and lead paint tainted debris can be disposed of the same way you would any other C&D debris as long as the levels are low.
\r\n\r\n
Rent a dumpster for larger cleanups, or hire a junk hauler to come pick up smaller amounts of debris. Always inform the rental company or junk removal provider that the debris is tainted.
\r\n\r\n
Automobile Fluids and Chemicals
\r\n\r\n
Examples: motor oil, antifreeze, transmission fluid, cleaners, brake fluid
\r\n\r\n
Most chemicals and liquids are required to be disposed of at a licensed household hazardous waste (HHW) facility. Cities that do not have such a facility will typically hold HHW collection events once or twice per year where you can drop off chemicals and other hazardous wastes. Used motor oil can be brought to an oil change facility or auto parts store for proper recycling. Call ahead just to be sure.
\r\n\r\n
Never dispose of auto fluids or chemicals in the trashcan or a dumpster. Refer to Earth911 for more information and to find a local automotive fluids recycler near you.
\r\n\r\n
Electronics (E-waste)
\r\n\r\n
Examples: computers, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, tablets, phones, other electronic devices
\r\n\r\n
Electronic waste, or e-waste, is growing in the U.S., and proper disposal of this debris is often misunderstood. Most e-waste is not allowed in the general waste stream; it should be properly recycled to avoid heavy metal contamination and other potential hazards. Some states, including California and New York, have banned disposal of e-waste in landfills or waste-to-energy (WTE) facilities. Instead of throwing e-waste in the trash, it should go to the proper recycling facility.
\r\n\r\n
Keep reading: Recycle Your Electronics With Junk Removal Services
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Find dumpster rental services near you
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
\r\n","teaser":"
Find out how to dispose of common household wastes, debris, and general junk. Learn the most cost-efficient and eco-friendly disposal options for nearly every type of debris.
\r\n","changed":"2023-04-25T13:14:01+00:00"},{"id":"79be4cf3-e8f0-51f4-a3a9-434890996447","title":"Renting a Dumpster for Home Cleanouts","url":"/blog/renting-a-dumpster-for-home-cleanouts","image":{"path":"/static/ac41bd06a8b652bc72efd7ea3f029b2c/home-cleanout-dumpster-rental.jpg","alt":"dumpster with household junk and debris in dumpster"},"tags":[{"id":"7ce68dc2-095e-5221-a253-7b8b847933db","name":"House Cleanout","slug":"House-Cleanout"},{"id":"c6d09b3c-4685-5ba7-83fd-d69df65bae55","name":"Declutter","slug":"Declutter"},{"id":"04fd2ebe-e793-5a68-9f65-b5be6a2552ea","name":"Household Junk Dumpsters","slug":"Household-Junk-Dumpsters"},{"id":"02a42cee-60f9-5dfd-858c-22ec36b1ce1e","name":"Dumpster Rental","slug":"Dumpster-Rental"}],"content":"
There are many circumstances that might call for a full home cleanout.
\r\n\r\n
Evictions, foreclosures, hoarding situations, and estate cleanouts are some examples of opportune times to utilize local dumpsters for rent in your area.
\r\n\r\n\r\n
If you've never had to rent a dumpster for yourself, don’t be intimidated.
\r\n\r\n
Even though these pieces of equipment are big, renting a roll-off dumpster is a relatively inexpensive and easy process.
\r\n\r\n
In this article, we’ll discuss:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
When to Rent a Dumpster
\r\n\t
What Kind of Dumpster to Rent
\r\n\t
How Much You Can Expect to Pay
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Find a dumpster rental company near you
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
When to Rent a Dumpster
\r\n\r\n
Cleaning out a home, whether it's yours or someone else’s, will most likely involve the disposal of items that your local waste management company won't pick up.
\r\n\r\n
Old appliances, electronics, light fixtures, and clothing are all examples of items that should never be disposed of in your curbside residential trash can.
\r\n\r\n
If you plan on going the DIY route instead of hiring a junk removal company to haul away the items from a full house cleanout, renting a dumpster from a local company is a great way to save money while still being convenient.
\r\n\r\n
The convenience of having a dumpster on location compared to having to haul individual truckloads to your local landfill yourself will have a significant impact on the time it takes you to complete your cleanout project.
\r\n\r\n
A 20 yard dumpster holds around 10-12 pickup truck loads' worth of items.
\r\n\r\n
<iframe allow=\"accelerometer; For more frequent pick-ups, such as biweekly, the cost will increase.
\r\n\r\n
Pro Tip: Go with an 8 yard dumpster rather than a 4 or 6 yard bin if the 6 yard dumpster is having to be emptied multiple times per week. This change will reduce disposal costs.
\r\n\r\n
Weight and Volume of Debris
\r\n\r\n
Exceeding this weight limit, or over-filling the dumpster, can lead to additional fees.
\r\n\r\n
If this becomes an ongoing issue, switch to a larger dumpster to eliminate overage fees.
\r\n\r\n
Keep reading: Complete Guide to Roll-off Dumpster Costs
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Laws by Location
\r\n\r\n
Laws regulating commercial dumpster placement and enclosure requirements vary by city.
\r\n\r\n
Some cities have strict laws while others are a bit more flexible.
\r\n\r\n
Below is an example of some of the requirements spelled out in Hollywood, Florida’s municipal code:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Enclosures are required (e.g., fences) if the dumpster is in public view
\r\n\t
Dumpsters cannot be placed in a location that would cause the garbage truck to block a street intersection during pick-up
\r\n\t
Enclosures must be at least 12 inches taller than the highest point of the dumpster
\r\n\t
Permits from the Building Division are required to build dumpster enclosures
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Check your city's website to learn about local commercial dumpster requirements.
\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
When an 8 Yard Dumpster Is the Right Choice
\r\n\r\n
Large 8-yard dumpsters accommodate the disposal needs of most businesses. Beyond the base rate, other potential charges include overage fees. href=\"https://www.hometowndumpsterrental.com/blog/junk-removal-101\" title=\"Junk Removal 101: A Guide to Junk Removal Services\">Junk removal services involve having a crew—usually two men—come to your home or business to haul away items, materials, or debris that you want to get rid of.
\r\n\r\n
Typically, the crew will come to the site before providing a quote.
\r\n\r\n
This helps to ensure they have a clear understanding of the work required, any accessibility considerations, and how much space the items will take up in the truck.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Generally, the space the items take up in the truck is the biggest judge of junk removal costs.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Junk removal costs depend on where you live, who you hire, how much junk/debris you have to remove, the type of items being removed, and whether or not hazardous materials are present (e.g. in a hoarding situation), which is why costs vary so much.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
How to Get the Best Deal on Junk Removal
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
The best way to ensure you get the best deal for junk removal services is to do your due title=\"Why You Should Get Multiple Quotes Before Hiring a Junk Removal Provider\">request quotes from as many companies as you'd like.
\r\n\r\n
As previously mentioned, most junk removal quotes are provided in person.
\r\n\r\n
While it may seem slightly uncomfortable to turn down doing business with a junk removal company face-to-face after they offer you a price, these estimates are no-obligation and you should not feel pressured at all to hire.
\r\n\r\n
In fact, we typically recommend getting 2-3 quotes whenever possible to minimize your risk of overpaying and creating more jobs in the area.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Throwing your unwanted junk out creates 6-7 jobs at best, while recycling can help create up to 30 jobs.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
According to the US Recycling Economic Information Study, the US Recycling Industry employs around 1.25 million people while the US Solid Waste Management industry employs around 0.25 million.
\r\n\r\n
Recycling is more labor-intensive than incineration or landfill disposal, which explains why so many more jobs are created from the recycling industry.
\r\n\r\n
According to Ecocycle, recycling creates around of 9x more jobs than traditional disposal methods, and in some areas can create as many as 30x more jobs.
\r\n\r\n
If the idea of contributing less trash to our rapidly decreasing landfill space isn't enough to begin recycling, maybe knowing the amount of jobs it could create in your area is.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Preserves Resources
\r\n\r\n
One of the main benefits of recycling is preserving natural resources.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
While preserving resources is beneficial for the environment, it's also beneficial for the cost of raw materials.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
The cost of aluminum, for example, would be significantly more expensive if it wasn't a commonly recycled material.
\r\n\r\n
Other materials like copper, iron, wood, glass, paper, plastic, and steel can also be recycled to help keep costs down.
\r\n\r\n
It's also worth mentioning that landfill space is a precious resource within itself.
\r\n\r\n
The less landfill space there is, the more expensive waste disposal costs will be, so recycling helps to preserve this quickly depleting landfill space.
\r\n\r\n
Learn more:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Recycling 101: Learn How significant decrease in yearly disposal costs.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Sets a Good Example
\r\n<img alt=\"set a good example by recycling\" child, niece, nephew, younger sibling, or other children in your life that you are a role model for, recycling is a great example to set for them.
\r\n\r\n
If you think that the effort recycling requires isn't worth it because it won't impact you directly, think of the impact it will make for future generations.
\r\n\r\n
The cost that future generations will have to pay for first step of planning a company office's relocation is deciding who will be the primary person in charge of coordinating and executing the relocation.
\r\n\r\n
This person will serve as the in-office coordinator of the moving process, so they should be:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
An authority in representing your company
\r\n\t
Good at communicating
\r\n\t
Highly organized
\r\n\t
Capable of making decisions quickly when necessary
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Typically, the smaller your project team is, the better.
\r\n\r\n
Usually, the in-office coordinator will have one or two other team members to assist them in executing the move from the planning stages to execution.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Step 2: Nail Down Key Schedule Dates
\r\n\r\n
One of the most important parts of planning a move is determining the key dates that will affect when things happen, like:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
When your current lease (if you have one) is up
\r\n\t
Your preferred (or scheduled) move-in date for the new office space
\r\n\t
When any build-out or remodeling work is intended to start and finish
\r\n\t
Intended start date for operations in the new office
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Without a clear understanding of these dates, it will be hard to plan any of the details surrounding the move.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Step 3: Establish an Estimated Budget for the Move
\r\n\r\n
The next step is to determine your budget for the move, or what your company can reasonably afford to pay throughout the relocation process.
\r\n\r\n
When estimating your office's relocation budget, consider these potential expenses:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Cost to pay movers or packing services
\r\n\t
Cost to repair existing office
\r\n\t
Cost to repair or remodel new office
\r\n\t
Additional hours for staff
\r\n\t
Fees incurred if terminating current lease early
\r\n\t
Cost to install IT systems in new office
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
This is just an idea of the various costs associated with an office move.
\r\n\r\n
To ensure you stay within your budget, be sure you consistently review your budget, expenses, and your progress.
\r\n\r\n
Keep reading:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
A Breakdown of the Costs to Remodel a Company Office
\r\n
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Step 4: Pick a Moving Company
\r\n\r\n
If you plan on using full-service movers who pack up, relocate, and unpack items in its new location for you, this is something you will need to consider (and schedule) early on.
\r\n\r\n
Typically, they have a coordinator who works with you to determine the needs of your move, your desired schedule, and how extensive and involved the move itself will be.
\r\n\r\n
They will then develop a project plan, schedule your services, and handle the relocation for you.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Step 5: Notify Employees and Customers
\r\n\r\n
Let employees know of the upcoming move as early as possible.
\r\n\r\n
Keep them up-to-date throughout the entire process so they know what to expect leading up to, during, and after the move.
\r\n\r\n
It would also be helpful to create a relocation FAQ or timeline summary that you can physically post for employees to refer to whenever they wish.
\r\n\r\n
Likewise, let any customers and vendors know of the upcoming move early on, and give them various updates throughout the process so they don't feel taken by surprise.
\r\n\r\n
Relocating due to company growth is something to celebrate and announce with pride.
\r\n\r\n
Finally, be sure you let the following places know of your impending move as well:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Relevant government departments
\r\n\t
US Post Office
\r\n\t
UPS, FedEx, and any other delivery service you use regularly
\r\n\t
Phone, Internet, and/or other data service providers
\r\n\t
Current office subscription services
\r\n
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Step 6: Plan Out Your New Office Layout
\r\n\r\n
If you need to update, redesign, or repair your new office in any way, now is the time to do so.
\r\n\r\n
If the space itself does not need to be physically repaired or updated, then it's time to establish a floor plan that will be attractive and conducive to workplace productivity.
\r\n\r\n
Create mockups of various potential layouts for office spaces, furniture and decor, high-traffic areas, break areas, etc.
\r\n\r\n
Once you create a few floor plans to consider, share them with your team and even your moving company or IT department to get their insight.
\r\n\r\n
If you need new office furniture or equipment, now is the time to choose that as well, coordinate delivery to your new office at the appropriate time, and incorporate it into your new office design.
\r\n\r\n
Find out more: Remodeling a Company Office Space: What's Involved and Who to Hire
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Step 7: Itemize Your Existing Equipment and Materials
\r\n\r\n
The next step in cleaning out your company’s workspace before a move is to organize and itemize all your items, materials, and equipment to determine what you have.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
By separating items according to purpose, it will be easier to determine what you want to keep, what you want to donate or recycle, what is trash, and the best organization system for moving your remaining items.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Sort through everything and separate things based on the purpose they serve, grouping things to make duplicates clear.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Step 8: Declutter as Needed
\r\n\r\n
The next step of an office relocation is typically going through your current equipment and materials and decluttering as much as possible.
\r\n\r\n
Are there things that you or your business no longer need?
\r\n\r\n
Are there papers and documents older than 3-5 years old?
\r\n\r\n
Do you have outdated equipment piling up in closets or corners of your office?
\r\n\r\n
If your current office furniture or equipment is in decent condition, you can donate them in bulk quickly and conveniently by hiring a junk removal company to handle the donation for you. (Ask them to provide you with a donation receipt.)
\r\n\r\n
If a large amount of equipment or furniture is not salvageable, then renting a dumpster to dispose of the items is typically the most convenient and cost-effective option.
\r\n\r\n
Purge unnecessary files and move paper records to digital whenever possible to improve safety and efficiency.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Get rid of any unwanted items you have with the help of junk removal services or dumpster rental services.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Junk removal companies offer an all-inclusive service in which they come and haul away your unwanted items on your behalf, whether you have a couple computers to get rid of or an entire office to clean out.
\r\n\r\n
Dumpster rentals offer a more DIY approach to getting rid of unwanted items. The dumpster is dropped off at your request and you then typically have a week to fill it up and complete your cleanup project.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Finding locally-owned dumpster rental and junk removal companies is easy with Hometown.
\r\n\r\n
Easily browse dumpster rental companies or junk removal companies, read customer reviews, and request quotes from as many companies as you'd like.
\r\n\r\n
This will allow you to ensure you get great services for a great price.
\r\n\r\n
Learn more:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Why You Should Get Multiple Quotes Before Hiring a Junk Removal Provider
\r\n\t
Decluttering: A Guide for Success
\r\n\t
The Best Ways to Get Rid of Furniture, Appliances, and More
\r\n
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Step 9: Update Marketing Materials to Reflect New Information
\r\n\r\n
Update all marketing materials to reflect your office's address change, including:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Company website
\r\n\t
Google Business Address
\r\n\t
Social media profiles
\r\n\t
Business cards
\r\n\t
Brochures
\r\n\t
Flyers
\r\n
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Step 10: Execute Your Office Relocation
\r\n\r\n
Now that you've followed all the previous steps, all that should be left to do is let the moving company relocate your furniture, set it up accordingly, and have your IT department set up all electronic equipment to allow your business to continue as usual in its new home.
\r\n\r\n
Make the effort to keep the new office organized while also keeping an eye out for ways the space's functionality could be improved.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Find dumpster rental or junk removal companies near you
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Read on:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
How to Streamline Your Office Cleanout
\r\n\t
How to Choose the Best Junk Removal Company
\r\n\t
Recycle Your Electronics With Junk Removal Services
\r\n\t
Questions to Ask Junk Removal Companies Before Hiring
\r\n
\r\n","teaser":"
Relocating your office can be stressful, whether you're a small business or a more established company.
