This is 50-percent more than the 1970s. Not only is it wasteful, but it’s expensive. The NRDC points out that this amount of waste costs the average family of four as much as $190 per month! The statistics are staggering.
\n\n\n
Food Waste in America
\n\n
The amount of food wasted in America is quite astounding. The NRDC estimates as much as 40-percent of food in America goes straight from the farm to the trash can.
\n\n
This uneaten food not only wastes billions of dollars each year, but it also consumes a considerable amount of time, energy and water during the manufacturing process.
\n\n
The EPA estimates that 14-percent of the total municipal solid waste in America is food waste, which is equivalent to more than 34 million tons each year (2010). The worst part is that less than 3% of food waste is ever recycled or recovered.
\n\n
You can see the amount of food waste generated in America is quite large, probably larger than you ever thought. But what can we do about it?
\n\n
What exactly is Food Waste?
\n\n
The EPA defines food waste as: “Food wastes are the organic residues generated by the handling, storage, sale, preparation, cooking, and serving of foods.” It’s important to know exactly what food waste is before you can take action toward reducing it.
\n\n
Food waste is more than just the leftovers you throw out after dinner; it also includes used oil/fats, fruit and vegetable scraps (i.e., stems/pits/rinds) and expired foods.
\n\n
The NRDC stresses the fact that expiration dates on food are not 100-percent accurate. It states most expired foods are still perfectly safe to eat. If it still looks and smells good, it’s most likely safe to eat.
\n\n
Reducing Food Waste
\n\n
There are several ways to reduce the estimated $165 billion worth of food waste entering landfills each year. The EPA has put together a pretty straightforward, yet effective, plan for reducing food waste in America. It’s called the Food Waste Recovery Hierarchy:
\n\n

\n\n
Let’s go through each level one-by-one.
\n\n
Source Reduction
\n\n
Source reduction simply refers to purchasing and producing less food. Let’s face it; we consume far more food that we need. Want proof? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), more than 35-percent of adults in the U.S. are obese.
\n\n
The NRDC states Americans eat 10 times more than people in Southeast Asia. Obesity statistics in America prove we eat more than we need.
\n\n
Source reduction is the most desirable way to reduce the amount of food waste generated. As a consumer, this means you need to be smarter in the grocery store. Meal planning, making shopping lists to avoid impulse buying, portion control at mealtime, and conducting a “food waste audit” in your home are all useful ways to reduce household food waste.
\n\n
Feed the Hungry
\n\n
NRDC statistics show one-in-six Americans are struggling to put healthy food on their table each day. By reducing food waste in the U.S., we could feed the vast majority of people living in poverty. In fact, the NRDC says a 15-percent reduction in food waste could help feed 25 million Americans.
\n\n
Instead of throwing out unused canned goods, cereal, baby foods and pet foods, consider donating it. Find a local food bank by visiting the Feeding America Food Bank Locator.
\n\n
Feed Animals
\n\n
A viable option for reducing food waste is converting it to animal feed. This can get a bit complicated since it’s not healthful to feed animals all types of food waste.
\n\n
Federal and local regulations also exist to restrict the types of foods that can be fed to animals, such as the Federal Swine Health Protection Act.
\n\n
The good news is there are companies out there turning food waste into healthy pet food and livestock feed. Most of the food scraps are collected from restaurants and grocery stores. Before feeding food waste to pets or farm animals, talk to your veterinarian and do plenty of research beforehand to make sure it’s done correctly.
\n\n
Industrial Uses
\n\n
Fats, oils and grease (aka: “FOGs”) are tough to dispose of at home. Feeding FOGs to pets or farm animals is typically not recommended. It’s also not a good idea to compost, recycle or improperly dispose of any materials that come in contact with FOGs.
\n\n
So, what do you do with it? Rather than tossing fats, oils, and grease into the trash, certain companies are able to render FOGs into products like animal feed, soap and biodiesel.
\n\n
FOGs are also used industrially to create energy during a process called anaerobic digestion. This process extracts methane gas which is then burned for energy. Many communities across the U.S. offer free pickup and disposal of FOGs. Contact local city officials for options in your area.
\n\n
Composting
\n\n
Much of the food waste entering landfills could actually be composted into nutrient-dense organic matter instead.
\n\n
It’s easy for homeowners to get started composting. Very few materials are needed. You can get started with some chicken wire and a shady spot in the yard. Good food scraps to compost include fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds/filter and egg shells. Avoid meats, bones and FOGs.
\n\n
Incineration or Landfill
\n\n
Last in line, and the least desirable way to dispose of food waste, is putting it in the garbage can. By following the EPA’s Food Recovery Hierarchy, you can greatly reduce the amount of food waste leaving your home or business destined for the landfill.
\n\n
Making Progress to Reduce Food Waste
\n\n
Times are changing; people are becoming more and more aware of the health and environmental effects of being wasteful. In fact, a recent survey conducted by Shelton Group found that ‘wasting food’ was the top response when asking people what they felt guilty about.
\n\n

\n\n
Communities across the country are also taking note. Waste-to-energy facilities are popping up around the country; curbside recycling is at an all-time high; composting is popular in rural and inner-city communities; businesses are becoming less wasteful.
\n\n
Starbucks is the perfect example of how some businesses are recycling food waste. The coffee giant is working with scientists in Hong Kong to turn its food waste into plastic materials, laundry detergents and other items.
\n\n
In the Hong Kong area alone, this change would have a major effect on the amount of coffee grounds and food waste entering landfills. Currently, Starbucks locations in the Hong Kong area produce 5,000 tons of used coffee grounds each year, most of which is sent to landfills.
\n\n
The progress toward reducing the amount of food waste entering landfills is definitely heading in the right direction, but there’s still a ways to go. The key to sustained progress is awareness. People need to know the extent of the problem and the fact that a relatively small reduction in food waste could help feed hungry mouths across the country.
\n\n
Please share this information with friends and family to help increase awareness about the state of food waste in America.
\n","teaser":"
Food waste is a bigger problem than most Americans think. It doesn’t take much extra work and offers a long list of benefits, including minimizing trash, reducing impact on environment and landfills, improving soil, halting erosion, preventing weeds and saving you money. This guide will show you everything you need to know to get started composting your trash and yard waste.
\n\n\n
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), yard trimmings and food waste makes up about 27 percent of total garbage entering the municipal waste stream. If you add wood and paper waste to the equation – both compostable items – you’re talking about two-thirds of the total municipal waste in the United States. That’s 250 million tons of trash, or the equivalent of nearly one ton of trash per person living in the U.S.!
\n\n
The Science behind Composting
\n\n
Before you start throwing your garbage in a pile hoping for it to magically turn to nutrient-rich compost, it’s important to know the science behind it all to make sure you know that you’re doing it the right way. Composting occurs due to the natural decomposition process. It happens all the time in nature when plants die. Millions of microbes in the compostable materials work to breakdown the matter into nutrient-rich compost in as little as one or two months. There are five key factors that influence how efficiently the composting process works:
\n\n
\n\t
Nutrient Balance: You need the correct balance of yard waste and food scraps.
\n\t
Moisture: Keeping the compost moist helps the microbes move around more efficiently.
\n\t
Material Size: Chopping food scraps and shredding yard waste helps speed up the process.
\n\t
Temperature: A properly mixed compost pile actually generates heat of at least 140-degrees at its core. This helps speed up the composting process and kills pathogens and weed seeds.
\n\t
Airflow: Oxygen flow helps speed up the composting process. Adding shredded newspaper or wood chips to the pile helps to aerate it.
\n
\n\n
Three Main Components of Composting
\n\n
The three main “ingredients” of a compost pile include water, brown and green materials. Brown materials include dead leaves, twigs and dead plants. Green materials include grass clippings, manure and food scraps. The brown materials supply a large amount of carbon to the mixture while green materials deliver a steady supply of nitrogen.
\n\n
\n
LEARN MORE: Composting 101 Infographic
\n
\n\n
The compost mixture should contain far more brown (carbon) materials than green (nitrogen) items. A C/N ratio of about 20-30:1 is ideal. If you have too many greens and not enough browns, your compost will begin to stink. Water is added to the mixture only to keep it from drying out – it must always be kept moist.
\n\n
Ideal Location for Compost Pile/Bin
\n\n
You can compost indoors or outdoors. The EPA suggests choosing a dry, shady location near a water source if you plan to compost outdoors. The composting bin should be at least 3 x 3 x 3 feet in size (1 cubic-yard), and you can use any container that allows for airflow.
\n\n
Chicken wire also makes a perfect (and inexpensive) composting bin. Indoor composting is ideal if you don’t have a yard or space to compost outdoors. Start by drilling half-inch holes in the bottom and sides of a small plastic garbage container. Put a brick in the bottom of a large garbage container surrounded with a layer of soil or wood chips. Place the smaller container inside the larger container on top of the brick and layer of brown material. Wrap insulation around the larger can to keep it warm, and keep it covered with the lid.
\n\n
Whether you compost indoors or outdoors, it’s important to try and keep the mixture of brown and green materials at the correct ratio. It’s also a good idea to mix the compost a couple of times per week to aerate the mixture.
\n\n

\n\n
What to Compost
\n\n
You shouldn’t throw all of your trash into a compost pile. As far as food scraps go, only add plant-based food scraps to the pile. This includes vegetables, fruits, coffee, nut shells and tea bags. The one animal-based product that is good for composting is eggshells, which contains a large amount of calcium.
\n\n

\n\n
Other items you should compost include cardboard, hair, wood ashes, dryer sheets, sawdust, yard trimmings, paper (without toxic paints/inks), newspaper, wood ships and plants. Manure is also ideal for composting; however, only use manure from animals that are herbivores, such as horses and cows.
\n\n
What NOT to Compost
\n\n
Avoid adding animal-based products to the compost pile, including dairy, fats/oils, meat, bones, eggs and butter. These items will attract mice, raccoons, and other pests not to mention create a foul odor. Other items to avoid include charcoal, cat/dog waste, yard waste treated with pesticides, diseased plants and black walnut leaves/twigs. Recyclables, such as plastics and metal, are not compostable. This type of trash recycling is available in virtually all major U.S. cities across the country.
\n\n
Common Problems
\n\n
Compost Pile Smells Bad: Contrary to what some people think, compost piles don’t smell bad. When it does, there’s something wrong. The primary culprits are too much water and animal-based food scraps.
\n\n
Pests/Rodents: If you find pests infiltrating your compost pile, be extra cautious to not include animal-based scraps to the pile. Also, rodent-proof the bin by putting a lid on it, making the holes on the side smaller and/or doubling up the chicken wire to prevent access to the pile.
\n\n
It doesn’t seem to be Composting: If the pile isn’t showing signs of decomposition, check to see if it’s moist by using a pitchfork or shovel to stir it up. Add water as needed. If moisture isn’t the problem, it may be a lack of nitrogen. Add grass clippings or manure to introduce more nitrogen to the pile.
\n\n
Helpful Tips
\n\n
\n\t
Compost during the summer months. The warmer weather speeds up the process.
\n\t
Collect your compostable food scraps in a small container under the kitchen sink or other designated place using a small container to reduce the number of trips you take to the compost bin.
\n\t
The compost is ready to use when it looks similar to topsoil. This may take as little as one month and up to two years depending upon how well you maintain the pile and types of material you use.
\n\t
Two compost piles are better than one. This allows you to continue composting one pile while harvesting the other.
\n
\n\n
\n
Read the latest posts at the Hometown Dumpster Rental Blog
\n
\n","teaser":"
Composting is a great way to start living a greener lifestyle. If you're not sure, just call a hometown trash hauler and describe your project and debris. Most are very helpful. When it comes to dumpster sizes, you may be better off renting a dumpster that is a little too large rather than too small. If you rent a dumpster that is too small, it ends up costing you double to have the first dumpster picked up and a new one delivered.
\r\n\t
Call to learn more - Call one or more of the preferred dumpster rental services that serve your area. Ask about their pricing, standard rental period, weight included in the price, materials not allowed in the trash container, and other rental policies.
\r\n\t
Schedule delivery and arrange payment - Schedule a date for delivery of a temporary dumpster to your home, job site, or place of business. It's recommended that you have your dumpster delivered the day before you actually need it.
\r\n\t
Request pickup - When your finished loading the trash or debris into the roll off dumpster, call the company back and they will pick the dumpster up and haul it away to the landfill, transfer station, or recycling center.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Dumpster rental costs
\r\n\r\n
The cost of renting a dumpster varies widely based on your location. The national average cost of renting a 10 yard dumpster is $300, while the national average cost of renting a 40 cubic yard container is nearly $500 for one-weekek rental. What you pay depends primarily on landfill fees in your area, the size of the container you need, and the dumpster company you select. To get the best price on a dumpster, get quotes from multiple rental companies.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Find a Dumpster Rental Company Near You
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Most companies quote one flat rate fee for delivery, pickup, and disposal (though some add delivery charges separately). The rental rate is usually for a standard period of time (for example... up to 7 days) and includes a certain amount of weight (for example... up to 3 tons). If you exceed this weight allowance, you will be subject to overage fees typically ranging from $50 to $100 per ton that you go over.
\r\n\r\n
When comparing dumpster rental prices between two companies:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Compare apples to apples (or 20 yard dumpsters to other 20 yard dumpsters... dumpster size can have a big impact on price).
\r\n\t
Ask how much time is included in the price and what it will cost if you need the container for a longer period
\r\n\t
Ask how much weight is included in the price and how much 'per ton' it will cost if the dumpster is over weight.
\r\n\t
Ask if any additional fees that may be applied for any reason
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Extra charges may apply if you need the roll off dumpster for longer than a provider's standard rental period. This is typically a per day fee (ie $5 or $10 per day), but some dumpster services will negotiate with you up front if you need it for slightly longer than their standard period.
\r\n\r\n
Pay particular attention to the amount of weight included in your price if you are disposing of heavy construction debris like bricks, cement, roofing shingles, or demolition debris. If you're renting a trash dumpster for cleaning out your home of miscellaneous household debris, you will typically not have to worry about 'over weight' fees because the debris is lighter.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Click Here to Find Reputable Dumpster Rental Providers Near You
\r\n","teaser":"
Learn how to rent a dumpster and be free of your debris. can become costly for larger cleanups, so it’s something to consider when deciding between renting a dumpster and hiring a junk hauling service.
\r\n\r\n
Hauling Waste Yourself
\r\n\r\n
If you have a truck and/or trailer, hauling the debris yourself to a local landfill is always an option.
\r\n\r\n
The advantage of this method is the lower cost of disposal compared to renting a roll-off, although the tradeoff is less convenience and speed.
\r\n\r\n
The time it takes you to drive and drop off the debris at the nearest landfill can be substantial.
\r\n\r\n
Also, hazardous materials require a permit to haul, so do your due diligence as to the laws in your area regarding the types of waste you are allowed to haul and the types of debris accepted at local landfills (e.g., some accept only C&D debris and not household trash).
\r\n\r\n
Household hazardous waste (HHW) facilities safely process and recycle potentially toxic wastes, such as e-waste, household cleaners, paint, chemicals, medicines, and liquids.
\r\n\r\n
Some communities host HHW events on an annual or biannual basis.
\r\n\r\n
Find the nearest HHW drop off location online by visiting Earth911.com.
\r\n\r\n
And now, let’s discuss specific types of wastes and how to properly get rid of each type.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Types of Junk, Waste, and Debris
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Household Trash and General Waste
\r\n\r\n
Examples: household garbage, furniture, broken toys, packaging materials
\r\n\r\n
This category of waste includes anything you’d typically put in your waste bin.
\r\n\r\n
Generally, this category of waste is taken care of via your waste hauler’s curbside collection service.
\r\n\r\n
However, there are situations that require additional means, like hoarding situations, foreclosure cleanups, moving, and special events that generate a lot of trash.
\r\n\r\n
When you have more than your curbside roll cart can handle, a roll-off container works great for bulk amounts of household trash.
\r\n\r\n
Alternatively, hiring a junk removal company to pick up the trash for you is a convenient disposal method, too, and it may be a more cost-effective option for smaller jobs (less than a few cubic yards of waste).
\r\n\r\n
You could also haul these wastes to the landfill yourself if you live within close proximity of one.
\r\n\r\n
Disposal of appliances containing Freon, paints, liquids, lead-acid batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, and other household hazardous wastes (HHWs) require special handling.
\r\n\r\n
These wastes shouldn’t be mixed in with your household garbage.
\r\n\r\n
Contact your city’s solid waste department to find the nearest HHW facility, or visit the city’s website for more information.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Construction & Demolition (C&D) Debris
\r\n\r\n
Examples: lumber, drywall (sheetrock), wood flooring, carpeting, renovation debris, roofing debris
\r\n\r\n
Residential and commercial construction or demolition projects require the use of a dumpster, junk removal company, or driving the debris to the landfill yourself.
\r\n\r\n
Some U.S. cities require C&D debris to be dropped off at dedicated construction and demolition landfill facilities where it is separated and recycled.
\r\n\r\n
Concrete
\r\n\r\n
Like asphalt, this is a very heavy, dense debris that is best disposed of in a roll-off dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
Most dumpster rental companies require concrete to be separated from other wastes, and it must be loaded in a smaller container, such as a 10 yard bin, to ensure it does not become too heavy of a load for the roll-off truck to handle.
\r\n\r\n
Roofing Shingles
\r\n\r\n
This is a heavy debris that is generally loaded in its own dumpster and not in mixed loads.
\r\n\r\n
Shingles are recycled in most municipalities.
\r\n\r\n
Wood/Lumber
\r\n\r\n
Wood has a potential to be reused if salvaged properly.
\r\n\r\n
Reclaiming wood and selling or donating it is one way to cut down on disposal costs for a project.
\r\n\r\n
Carpeting
\r\n\r\n
A junk removal company offers the most convenient disposal solution in this case.
\r\n\r\n
Renting a dumpster or having your waste hauler pick it up are also valid options.
\r\n\r\n
Many waste haulers require the carpeting to be cut down to a specified length (e.g., 4 ft. lengths), so that may add to the inconvenience of going this route.
\r\n\r\n
Wood/Laminate Flooring
\r\n\r\n
This material is salvageable in many cases.
\r\n\r\n
This would, again, help cut down on disposal costs.
\r\n\r\n
If reclaiming the wood isn’t an option, other cost-effective solutions include renting a roll-off or hiring a junk removal company to pick it up.
\r\n\r\n
Siding
\r\n\r\n
Certain types of siding, such as cedar, are highly desirable, and people will often take it off your hands.
\r\n\r\n
This is great for cutting down on disposal costs.
\r\n\r\n
Simply posting a listing on Craigslist is an easy way to accomplish getting rid of cedar or wood siding.
\r\n\r\n
Vinyl siding is typically disposed of in a dumpster or picked up by a junk removal company.
\r\n\r\n
A dumpster is generally the more cost-effective option for a whole-house siding replacement project.
\r\n\r\n
Kitchen/Bathroom Renovation
\r\n\r\n
This includes cabinets, tubs, sinks, toilets, countertops, and floors.
\r\n\r\n
Much of this material can be reclaimed. Other materials can be disposed of in a roll-off container or via junk removal service.
\r\n\r\n
Most waste haulers do not accept renovation debris via curbside service.
\r\n\r\n
However, some will by appointment for an additional fee.
\r\n\r\n
Metals
\r\n\r\n
Bulk amounts of steel, aluminum, copper, and other metals should be recycled.
\r\n\r\n
Metal is a valuable commodity.
\r\n\r\n
You can eliminate disposal costs and make a few bucks by dropping off metal scraps at a local scrap yard.
\r\n\r\n
If you cannot DIY, some metal recyclers may be able to pick it up, or you can post an ad on Craigslist.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Yard Waste
\r\n\r\n
Examples: tree limbs, bush trimmings, grass clippings
\r\n\r\n
Being that it’s an organic waste, yard debris is best disposed by composting, but dumpsters and junk removal companies are good options, too.
\r\n\r\n
Dumpster companies and junk removal service providers will drop off the yard wastes at the proper facility.
\r\n\r\n
*Most waste haulers don’t allow yard debris mixed in with general waste.
\r\n\r\n
Heavy yard wastes, such as large logs, are best handled by professionals who have the right equipment to safely load and haul away such debris.
\r\n\r\n
Most junk removal companies have the right equipment to take on this type of project.
\r\n\r\n
Consider starting a compost pile if you have the room to do so.
\r\n\r\n
It’s the easiest and least expensive way to get rid of yard debris, plus it produces nutrient-rich compost ideal for farming, landscaping, and flower gardens.
\r\n\r\n
Be sure you know the laws regarding yard waste disposal in your area.
\r\n\r\n
Some cities have made yard debris composting mandatory.
\r\n\r\n
In this case, you’d need to have the debris dropped off at the proper composting facility.
\r\n\r\n
It may not be accepted at the municipal landfill, so be sure to do your due diligence.
\r\n\r\n
Search your city’s solid waste authority website or give them a call to learn more.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Appliances
\r\n\r\n
Examples: kitchen stove (range), microwave, washer, dryer, dishwasher, refrigerator
\r\n\r\n
Hiring a junk removal company for removal of one or several appliances is a quick and cost-effective method of removal. Junk haulers charge a minimum fee of anywhere from $50 to $125, so expect to be charged at least that amount for the appliance removal.
\r\n\r\n
A dumpster works well for disposal of a whole home's worth of appliances, such as during a major renovation project or demolition.
\r\n\r\n
Choose a bigger dumpster than you think you need.
\r\n\r\n
Why? Most roll-off containers have rounded bottoms, while most appliances are bulky and square.
\r\n\r\n
So while you may have 10 cubic yards worth of appliances (think of 10 kitchen stoves, which approximately equals 10 cubic yards), the appliances will consume greater than 10 cubic yards worth of space inside a dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
In this example, a 20 yard bin may be the better choice.
\r\n\r\n
Save on disposal costs by donating working appliances to local charitable organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity.
\r\n\r\n
Some locations may even pick them up for free, so be sure to ask!
\r\n\r\n
Alternatively, you can sell appliances that are still in good shape via Craigslist, Facebook, or by other means.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Household Hazardous Wastes (HHWs)
\r\n\r\n
Examples: lead-acid batteries, fluorescent bulbs, household cleaners, motor oil, chemicals
\r\n\r\n
This class of wastes should never be mixed in with the general waste stream, so avoid putting household hazardous wastes in the waste bin, dumpsters, burning it, burying it, or using any other unsafe disposal method. Doing so can taint drinking water, harm local wildlife, produce unsafe crops at local farms, and pollute the air.
\r\n\r\n
Dispose of HHWs by dropping them off at a local HHW processing facility.
\r\n\r\n
Some communities also host annual or biannual HHW pickup events where you can drop off a wide range of hazardous wastes found in your home.
\r\n\r\n
Junk removal companies, and some dumpster rental providers, will accept HHWs if you discuss it beforehand.
\r\n\r\n
There may or may not be additional fees for handling/hauling of hazardous materials—it depends upon the company and local laws governing HHW handling.
\r\n\r\n
Find a household hazardous waste recycler near you.
\r\n\r\n
Here’s a quick breakdown of common types of HHWs:
\r\n\r\n
Batteries
\r\n\r\n
Common A, AA, AAA, D, and similar dry-cell batteries can be thrown away with your trash.
\r\n\r\n
However, car batteries and other larger batteries need to be properly recycled.
\r\n\r\n
Liquids
\r\n\r\n
This includes motor oil, antifreeze, household cleaners, fuel, and other toxic/flammable liquids.
\r\n\r\n
Motor oil can be safely dropped off for recycling at a local oil change facility or car dealership that provides service.
\r\n\r\n
Other liquids can usually be dropped off at an HHW facility or cleanup event.
\r\n\r\n
Light Bulbs
\r\n\r\n
Fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) shouldn’t be mixed in with household trash.
\r\n\r\n
They contain small amounts of mercury.
\r\n\r\n
Drop these off at the nearest recycling facility that accepts CFLs.
\r\n\r\n
Some retailers, such as Lowe's and IKEA, also accept CFLs for proper recycling.
\r\n\r\n
Learn more about CFL recycling.
\r\n\r\n
Medicines
\r\n\r\n
Dispose of medications at your local cleanup event or HHW processing facility.
\r\n\r\n
If you do not have access to this type of event or facility, you can dispose of medicines in the following manner:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Mix medicines with dirt, kitty litter, or coffee grounds.
\r\n\t
Place in a plastic Ziploc bag and seal it.
\r\n\t
Throw the bag in your trash receptacle.
\r\n\t
Remove prescription labels and/or scratch out any personal information on the bottle to protect your privacy. Throw bottle(s) away.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Explosives
\r\n\r\n
Highly-flammable, combustible, and explosive wastes can be dangerous when mixed in with the general waste stream.
\r\n\r\n
Local laws dictate the proper way to dispose of wastes, like fuel, oil, fireworks, lighter fluid, matches, and others.
\r\n\r\n
Paint
\r\n\r\n
Wet paint must be dried before throwing it away.
\r\n\r\n
You can mix bulk amounts of paint with sand or similar material to dry it quickly.
\r\n\r\n
You can safely throw empty, dry paint cans into the trash or a rented dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
The one exception is if the paint is very old and may contain lead.
\r\n\r\n
It is unlikely this will be an issue considering lead paint was banned in 1978 (although lead-based paint was still sold for several years after that).
\r\n\r\n
If it’s a very old can of paint you need to dispose of, play it safe and bring it to a local recycling facility for proper disposal.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Recyclables
\r\n\r\n
Examples: paper, cardboard, plastics, metal
\r\n\r\n
Despite the slight downturn in recycling noted in recent years, access to recycling services is pretty extensive these days. For bulk amounts of recyclables, you have several options:
\r\n\r\n
Renting a dumpster is a quick and easy option for DIYers.
\r\n\r\n
Clean load it with recyclable materials only and the rental company may offer a discount.
\r\n\r\n
Junk removal is usually more expensive than renting a dumpster but much more convenient.
\r\n\r\n
Dropping recyclables off at a recycling center is the most cost-effective method for handling a low volume of recyclables.
\r\n\r\n
Posting an ad on Craigslist or Freecycle is another cheap and convenient way to get rid of recyclables.
\r\n\r\n
The potential downsides include having to wait potentially days or weeks (if ever) before finding someone to pick it up, and this method is generally limited to working well for valuable recyclables, such as metals.
\r\n\r\n
Bring scrap metals, like copper pipes, steel, brass fittings, iron, junk cars, etc., to a local metal scrap yard to get paid for your scraps.
\r\n\r\n
Some recycling facilities will even purchase bulk amounts of paper, cardboard, and plastics.
\r\n\r\n
For example, Padnos is a full-service recycler serving most of the State of Michigan and will purchase most types of recyclables (in bulk amounts).
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Food Scraps and Organic Waste
\r\n\r\n
Food and organic scraps can be composted.
\r\n\r\n
Not all food scraps are ideal for composting, however.
\r\n\r\n
Wastes that are excellent compost materials include:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Egg shells
\r\n\t
Fruit and vegetable scraps
\r\n\t
Coffee grounds and filters
\r\n\t
Clean paper and newspaper
\r\n\t
Vacuum residuals
\r\n\t
Hair and nail clippings
\r\n\t
Dirt, soil, grass clippings, dead leaves, and small tree limbs
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
<a started.
\r\n\r\n
Do not compost meats, cheeses/dairy, plastics, fats, dirty paper/paper towels, breads, dog/cat wastes (grass-eating animal wastes are ok), or processed foods.
\r\n\r\n
If you have a bulk amount of food or organic waste to dispose of, discuss solutions with your waste hauler or a dumpster rental provider near you.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Tires
\r\n\r\n
Tires are banned for disposal in landfills in the majority of states within the United States.
\r\n\r\n
Instead, they can be recycled or reused.
\r\n\r\n
Bring old automobile tires to a tire retailer for recycling.
\r\n\r\n
There may be a small fee involved in some cases.
\r\n\r\n
Alternatively, you can sell or give away tires that still have some tread left.
\r\n\r\n
Recyclers, artists, and companies that work with rubber may also take them off your hands for free.
\r\n\r\n
Post an ad on Craigslist, Facebook, or Freecycle.org to get started.
\r\n\r\n
Junk removal companies also haul away tires, and this is a cost-effective and convenient option if you have a large number of tires to offload.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Asbestos, Mold, and Lead Paint
\r\n\r\n
Found on drywall, paint, roofing materials, and other building materials.
\r\n\r\n
These toxic substances are more prevalent in older homes or commercial buildings.
\r\n\r\n
Before starting a renovation, demolition, or construction project in an older home, be sure to have it tested for asbestos, mold, and lead paint.
\r\n\r\n
Asbestos
\r\n\r\n
Asbestos fibers are released into the air when affected material, such as drywall, is disturbed.
\r\n\r\n
Left alone, asbestos isn’t harmful.
\r\n\r\n
It’s during renovation or demolition that the asbestos is released into the air.
\r\n\r\n
Exposure can lead to lung cancer, mesothelioma, and lung problems.
\r\n\r\n
Mold
\r\n\r\n
Avoid dangerous mold by controlling moisture inside your home, repairing leaks, and cleaning up after natural disasters.
\r\n\r\n
Mold can often hide behind walls.
\r\n\r\n
If you spot a large area of it, it’s best to leave the removal to the professionals.
\r\n\r\n
In terms of disposal, a mold removal specialist will properly discard of the materials for you.
\r\n\r\n
Otherwise, you can dispose of small quantities of moldy materials in a dumpster if the debris is bagged or wrapped in plastic.
\r\n\r\n
Lead Paint
\r\n\r\n
How you dispose of lead paint debris depends upon how much of it is present and what your state’s laws are regarding disposal.
\r\n\r\n
If a sample of the debris contains less than 100 milligrams of lead per kilogram, you can typically dispose of it like regular municipal waste.
\r\n\r\n
If concentrations of lead are greater than that benchmark, special disposal procedures must be followed.
\r\n\r\n
It’s best to hire a lead paint abatement specialist to test for lead paint and to dispose of it if necessary.
\r\n\r\n
To summarize, asbestos materials always require special disposal procedures, while mold and lead paint tainted debris can be disposed of the same way you would any other C&D debris as long as the levels are low.
\r\n\r\n
Rent a dumpster for larger cleanups, or hire a junk hauler to come pick up smaller amounts of debris.
\r\n\r\n
Always inform the rental company or junk removal provider that the debris is tainted.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Automobile Fluids and Chemicals
\r\n\r\n
Examples: motor oil, antifreeze, transmission fluid, cleaners, brake typically hold HHW collection events once or twice per year where you can drop off chemicals and other hazardous wastes.
\r\n\r\n
Used motor oil can be brought to an oil change facility or auto parts store for proper recycling.
\r\n\r\n
Call ahead just to be sure.
\r\n\r\n
Never dispose of auto fluids or chemicals in the trashcan or a dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
Refer to <a phones, other electronic devices
\r\n\r\n
Electronic waste, or e-waste, is growing in the U.S., and proper disposal of this debris is often misunderstood.
\r\n\r\n
Most e-waste is not allowed in the general waste stream; it should be properly recycled to avoid heavy metal contamination and other potential hazards.
\r\n\r\n
Some states, including California and New York, have banned disposal of e-waste in landfills or Cost of Dumpster Rental and Junk Removal Services
\r\n\r\n
Dumpster rental and junk removal costs vary based on a number of factors, including the type and amount of debris, where you're located, the accessibility of your property, and who you hire.
\r\n\r\n
Your exact project cost will depend on these factors, and the best way to get an accurate estimate for your rental or project is to reach out to multiple service providers in your area for a quote.
\r\n\r\n
This not only ensures you get the best price but also allows you to choose the best company for the job, not just the cheapest.
\r\n\r\n
Location
\r\n\r\n
Do you live out in the country or far off the beaten path?
\r\n\r\n
If so, you can expect your dumpster rental or junk removal service to cost more due to the cost of travel incurred by the company.
\r\n\r\n
Cost of living and local disposal fees also play a large role in cost.
\r\n\r\n
For example, you’ll pay significantly more in New York City to rent a dumpster than you would in Memphis, TN based on the difference in cost of living.
\r\n\r\n
You'll also likely pay more for an apartment cleanout that requires hauling items up and down flights of stairs compared to the same size cleanout in the same zip code that is conveniently located on the first floor.
\r\n\r\n
Type of Debris
\r\n\r\n
Some service providers—dumpster and junk removal—charge differently for household wastes vs. construction and demolition (C&D) debris.
\r\n\r\n
C&D debris is often heavier, so it may end up costing more to haul away than general household trash.
\r\n\r\n
Amount of Debris
\r\n\r\n
The heavier the load, the more you’ll pay.
\r\n\r\n
For junk removal, costs rise as the volume of junk increases.
\r\n\r\n
A full truckload of junk, for example, costs more than a load taking up just half of the truck’s total capacity.
\r\n\r\n
Likewise, if you exceed the weight limit of your dumpster rental you'll likely be hit with overage fees.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
\r\n<h2 Phase 1 of Masdar City’s waste management plan will divert 50 percent of all waste away from landfills, or the equivalent of about 11,000 metric tons. The plan is to sort waste into three main streams: dry recyclables (i.e., cans and cardboard), wet recyclables (i.e., food scraps) and residuals (i.e., empty food containers). Dry recyclables will be shipped to the recycling center while wet recyclables will be composted and used for landscaping purposes. Other residual waste, including toxic waste, will be handled outside the city.
\r\n\r\n
The City of the Future?
\r\n\r\n
Is Masdar City the city of the future? It very well could be. However, it’s tough to say for sure until the city is fully developed and operational. This won’t happen until 2025 assuming everything stays on schedule. On paper, the city looks incredible and is amazingly eco-friendly. That said, there’s no way of knowing how accurate this will translate in real life. My best guess is that Masdar City succeeds in developing the most sustainable city in the world. However, it comes with a steep price – estimates put the price tag at around $18 to $19 billion.
\r\n\r\n
More Photos of Masdar City:
\r\n\r\n

\r\nImages via: Masdar City Official Website
\r\n","teaser":"
Smack dab in the middle of the desert is the location of one of the world’s greenest cities.
