target='_self'>
\n\n
To contain the resulting debris of a bathroom remodel project, we recommend utilizing a dumpster.
\n\n
Dumpsters are relatively inexpensive and allow you to keep your site clean as you go.
\n\n
Choosing the right size dumpster for a bathroom renovation project comes down to two main factors:
\n\n
\n\t
Materials being disposed
\n\t
Size of bathroom
\n
\n\n
For an average-size bathroom remodel, a 10 or 20 yard dumpster makes the most sense.
\n\n
A 10 yard dumpster will likely be adequate for small projects that involve toilet dumpster may be necessary for larger bathroom demolitions that include wall removal, disposal of large shower units, or removal of large two-sink vanities.
\n\n
Be sure to measure shower units and vanities to ensure they will fit (length and width) inside your chosen dumpster size.
\n\n
We recommend getting at least 2-3 quotes from different dumpster remove the fixtures or clean up the debris for you.
\n\n
\n
Junk removal services almost always cost more due to labor costs, but many would argue that the convenience is well worth it.
\n
\n\n
For reference, a 20 yard dumpster costs $350 on average for a 7-day rental, while a junk removal clean-up of the same size costs $500 on average.
\n\n
Common Factors That Affect the Cost of Junk Removal:
\n\n
\n\t
Volume of junk or debris
\n\t
How easy it is to access the site/debris
\n\t
Whether or not demolition/disassembly is required
\n\t
Overall complexity of the job
\n
\n\n
Many junk removal companies offer prices starting at $75 to $125 and go up from there based on the factors above.
\n\n
How to Save on Junk Removal Costs:
\n\n
Place the demolition debris in the driveway or at the curb for This is often true for refrigerators.
\n\n
Be sure to check with the rental company to ensure you comply with all regulations.
\n\n
Dumpster Rental vs Other Disposal Options
\n\n
For projects like a kitchen renovation or demolition, a roll-off dumpster or trailer dumpster is an ideal disposal option.
\n\n
Here are some reasons why:
\n\n
\n\t
10 or 20 yard dumpsters provide ample capacity to accommodate the debris from just about any kitchen demo. It makes the cleanup quicker than other disposal methods.
\n\t
Hauling the appliances and debris to the landfill yourself may require multiple trips, costing you more in terms of time, work, landfill dump fees, and wear-and-tear on your vehicle and/or equipment.
\n\t
Piecing out debris and disposing of it in the weekly trash cart or a commercial dumpster is illegal in most cities and states. Construction & demolition (C&D) debris should not be mixed with general wastes.
\n\t
Bagster and other bag-style dumpsters generally have approximately 3 cubic yards of loading capacity. That’s not enough capacity to accommodate a kitchen demolition project. It would likely take three or more of these bags to complete the job, and that would cost far more than simply renting a 10 or 20 yard roll-off container.
\n
\n\n
RELATED: Beginner’s Guide to Renting a Dumpster
\n\n
Dumpster Rental Costs
\n\n
Prices vary by company and location, so it’s a good idea to contact 2-3 dumpster rental providers to ensure you’re getting the best price and service.
\n\n
Another key point to consider is availability, especially when dumpster companies tend to be the busiest (summer, construction/renovation season). Call and book your dumpster early (1-2 weeks in advance) to ensure the right size roll-off container or trailer is available.
\n\n
On average, expect to pay $300-$400 for a 10 or 20 yard dumpster rental. This usually includes a 7-day rental period and drop off and pickup. Additional fees may apply.
\n\n
\n
RELATED:
\n\n
\n\t
Dumpster Rental Price Guide
\n\t
The Big List of Dumpster Rental Costs in All 50 States
\n\t
What can I Expect to Pay for Dumpster Service Cost?
\n\t
Kitchen Demolition Cost Breakdown
\n\t
5 Tips for Saving Big on the Cost of Kitchen Demolition
\n
\n\n
\n
Call around to get the best deal.
\n\n
We recommend considering smaller, local dumpster rental providers rather than focusing on large waste companies like Waste Management. Dumpsters
\n\n
Rubber-wheeled trailer dumpsters are not as widely available compared to roll-off dumpsters.
\n\n
They do, however, offer unique advantages.
\n\n
Being on tires rather than steel feet, trailer dumpsters offer great protection against damage to driveways, sidewalks, or yards.
\n\n
They can also be maneuvered into difficult areas and are more easily adjusted to various loading locations if that is necessary.
\n\n
Trailer dumpster sizes vary but often fall in the 8 to 12 cubic yard range.
\n\n
Larger 15-20 yard trailer dumpsters (or bigger) are available by some waste hauling companies.
\n\n
Some have short sides while others have tall sides, so be sure to inquire about that if it makes a difference in the type of debris being disposed of.
\n\n
Learn more about trailer dumpsters: Do Dumpster Trailers Require a Permit?
\n\n
Bag Dumpsters
\n\n
These are the smallest dumpsters available on the market and are essentially large, heavy-duty garbage bags.
\n\n
Capacities can range from two to about five cubic yards.
\n\n
The most popular option is Bagster, which is a Waste Management product.
\n\n
These bags offer about three cubic yards of loading capacity.
\n\n
These compact “soft” dumpsters are constructed of a tarp-like material that is strong enough to hold 2,000 lbs. or more of waste or debris.
\n\n
Due to their small size, they are not ideal for bulky items, such as furniture, bathtubs, kitchen cabinets, etc.
\n\n
While bag dumpsters offer a seemingly convenient way to obtain a compact dumpster that is slightly larger than most trash rollcarts, it’s not always the best option.
\n\n
Here’s why…
\n\n
Higher Price
\n\n
We’ve investigated the costs associated with Bagster and similar bag dumpsters and found the price to be comparable, or even more in some cases, compared to that of renting a standard 10 yard roll-off dumpster or trailer dumpster.
\n\n
Cost varies by city but is a two-part expense:
\n\n
\n\t
Cost of the bag dumpster
\n\t
Cost of having it picked up and hauled away
\n
\n\n
You can purchase a bag dumpster from most large home improvement stores, the waste hauler offering it, or even on Amazon.
\n\n
Prices can range from $50 to $150, but again, this can vary outside this range depending on location and availability.
\n\n
Once the bag is loaded up and full, you must then call your local waste hauler (i.e., call Waste Management if you’re using a Bagster) and have them come pick it up.
\n\n
This expense can run another $100 or more.
\n\n
If the bag dumpster is filled too high or loaded with too much weight, they may ask you to remove some or charge you extra.
\n\n
Total costs can top $200 for a three cubic yard bag dumpster, and that’s on the lower end.
\n\n
Inconvenience
\n\n
Initially, it may seem that a “dumpster” you can purchase from Home Depot is a convenient option, but it’s not when you consider everything.
\n\n
you still have to pick it up, call to have it picked up, and possibly order another if the bag dumpster turned out to be not enough loading capacity to finish the job.
\n\n
On the other hand, renting a roll-off container or trailer dumpster takes a simple phone call to book it, and the waste hauling company brings it They are experts at gauging debris and helping customers pick the right dumpster size for them.
\n\n
If you already have piles of debris to dispose of, estimate how many cubic yards of debris you have.
\n\n
For the average person, visualizing '1 cubic yard' is a bit abstract and may be difficult, so instead try to visualize how many 'kitchen stoves' worth of debris you have.
\n\n
Kitchen stoves are a great reference for what a cubic yard looks like.
\n\n

\n\n
If you have less than 10 kitchen stoves worth of debris, then a 10 yard dumpster is likely the best option.
\n\n
If you have more than 10 kitchen stoves worth of debris, a 20 yard is likely ideal for your project.
\n\n
We always recommend overestimating the amount of debris you have to be sure you don't overfill your dumpster.
\n\n
Type of Debris
\n\n
Just as demolition projects have varying amounts of debris, they have varying types of debris as well, and each type has a different weight and disposal cost.
\n\n
Heavy construction and demolition (C&D) debris, like concrete and brick, takes up minimal space in a dumpster but weighs a great deal.
\n\n
For this reason, 10 yard dumpsters are generally the best option, but the dumpster should have a relatively high weight limit to accomodate all the heavy debris.
\n\n
Lightweight materials, like wood and carpeting, tend to take up more space than heavy materials, so you may need a 20 yard dumpster for the space alone.
\n\n
However, lightweight debris is generally cheaper to dispose of than heavy debris, unless you clean load the dumpster and the material is recyclable, as is often the case with concrete.
\n\n
If you anticapate that your project will produce mixed materials, like concrete, wood, and metal debris, for example, be sure to disclose this to your dumpster rental provider.
\n\n
You may need to separate debris types.
\n\n
\n
Find a local dumpster rental company
\n\n
\n
Disposal Options Comparison
\n\n
Bag-Style Dumpsters
\n\n
Instead of renting a temporary dumpster, you may be tempted to buy the popular Bagster option available at Home Depot and other retailers, but these are generally not a good option for disposing of demolition debris.
\n\n
Bag-style dumpsters can generally hold 3 cubic yards and up to 3,300 lbs of debris and material.
\n\n
However, when disposing of heavy construction and demolition (C&D) debris and materials, only 1 cubic yard, or roughly 2,025 lbs, is allowed in the Bagster.
\n\n
Conversely, other C&D materials, like flooring, trim work, and cabinets, may not weigh much, but they tend to take up space quickly, and 3 cubic yards won't get you very far.
\n\n
Self-Hauling
\n\n
Many people utilize their truck beds and trailers and simply haul their debris to the nearest recycling facility or landfill.
\n\n
This is a great option in some cases, but it's not always the most efficient or cost-effective.
\n\n
If it takes multiple round trips to dispose of the debris properly, that time could be better spent working on the next phase of your project.
\n\n
Not to mention, costs add up quickly, even when doing the work yourself, e.g., fuel costs, landfill fees, wear and tear on your vehicle and/or body, trailer or truck rental (if applicable).
\n\n
Keep reading: <a sizes that rental providers offer.
\n\n
With a maximum capacity of 10 cubic yards, they can hold up to 5 pick-up truck loads' worth of debris.
\n\n
These roll-off containers are typically 12 ft L x 8 ft W x 3.5 ft H, allowing them to be placed in most residential driveways, construction sites, parking lots, and more.
\n\n
Though these dumpsters are great for smaller areas, if you have a very tight space that the truck needs to navigate to place the dumpster, you may need to place your dumpster in the street (if possible).
\n\n
Likewise, some companies' 10 yard dumpster dimensions may differ slightly from this.
\n\n
If you're worried about whether or not a 10 yard dumpster will fit on your property, be sure to ask the rental providers you speak to for exact dimensions.
\n\n
10 yard containers, like most roll-off dumpsters, feature a door at one end that swings open for easy, walk- or roll-in loading.
\n\n
This makes it particularly convenient for carrying or wheel-barrowing bulky or heavy items, like furniture, home appliances, or demolition debris, safely into the dumpster.
\n\n
\n
<a when you need it, but it will also ensure that you don't overpay for mediocre services.
\n\n
\n
By getting multiple estimates, you'll be able to compare everything each company includes in the price of their 10 yard dumspter rental.
\n
\n\n
For example, Company A may charge $250 for a 10 yard dumpster rental that includes 4,000 lbs for a seven-day period.
\n\n
Company B may charge $350 for a 10 yard dumpster rental that includes 6,000 lbs for a seven-day period.
\n\n
Company B may cost more upfront, but the additional weight included in your price is almost always worth the $50 price increase.
\n\n
If you go with the cheaper dumpster and end up going over your 4,000 lb weight limit, you'll have to pay more than $50 in overage fees.
\n\n
Avoid this issue by reaching out to various dumpster services in your area.
\n\n
\n
<a If you're not sure, just call a hometown trash hauler and describe your project and debris. Most are very helpful. When it comes to dumpster sizes, you may be better off renting a dumpster that is a little too large rather than too small. If you rent a dumpster that is too small, it ends up costing you double to have the first dumpster picked up and a new one delivered.
\r\n\t
Call to learn more - Call one or more of the preferred dumpster rental services that serve your area. Ask about their pricing, standard rental period, weight included in the price, materials not allowed in the trash container, and other rental policies.
\r\n\t
Schedule delivery and arrange payment - Schedule a date for delivery of a temporary dumpster to your home, job site, or place of business. It's recommended that you have your dumpster delivered the day before you actually need it.
\r\n\t
Request pickup - When your finished loading the trash or debris into the roll off dumpster, call the company back and they will pick the dumpster up and haul it away to the landfill, transfer station, or recycling center.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Dumpster rental costs
\r\n\r\n
The cost of renting a dumpster varies widely based on your location. The national average cost of renting a 10 yard dumpster is $300, while the national average cost of renting a 40 cubic yard container is nearly $500 for one-weekek rental. What you pay depends primarily on landfill fees in your area, the size of the container you need, and the dumpster company you select. To get the best price on a dumpster, get quotes from multiple rental companies.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Find a Dumpster Rental Company Near You
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Most companies quote one flat rate fee for delivery, pickup, and disposal (though some add delivery charges separately). The rental rate is usually for a standard period of time (for example... up to 7 days) and includes a certain amount of weight (for example... up to 3 tons). If you exceed this weight allowance, you will be subject to overage fees typically ranging from $50 to $100 per ton that you go over.
\r\n\r\n
When comparing dumpster rental prices between two companies:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Compare apples to apples (or 20 yard dumpsters to other 20 yard dumpsters... dumpster size can have a big impact on price).
\r\n\t
Ask how much time is included in the price and what it will cost if you need the container for a longer period
\r\n\t
Ask how much weight is included in the price and how much 'per ton' it will cost if the dumpster is over weight.
\r\n\t
Ask if any additional fees that may be applied for any reason
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Extra charges may apply if you need the roll off dumpster for longer than a provider's standard rental period. This is typically a per day fee (ie $5 or $10 per day), but some dumpster services will negotiate with you up front if you need it for slightly longer than their standard period.
\r\n\r\n
Pay particular attention to the amount of weight included in your price if you are disposing of heavy construction debris like bricks, cement, roofing shingles, or demolition debris. If you're renting a trash dumpster for cleaning out your home of miscellaneous household debris, you will typically not have to worry about 'over weight' fees because the debris is lighter.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Click Here to Find Reputable Dumpster Rental Providers Near You
\r\n","teaser":"
Learn how to rent a dumpster and be free of your debris. unwanted junk or debris, and each has its place.
\r\n\r\n
Recycling/Reusing
\r\n\r\n
This is the best possible option because it's great for the environment and your wallet.
\r\n\r\n
Always recycle, reuse, or donate materials when you can.
\r\n\r\n
If this is not an option, then it's time to start considering the next disposal options.
\r\n\r\n
Renting a Dumpster
\r\n\r\n
Dumpsters come in a wide range of sizes, from 3 cubic yard dumpster bags to full-size 40 cubic yard construction dumpsters.
\r\n\r\n
It’s an ideal solution for construction, demolition, house cleanouts, roofing, yard waste disposal, and recycling in bulk.
\r\n\r\n
Junk Removal
\r\n\r\n
This is a great option for disposal of e-waste, tough-to-dispose-of wastes, and bulk amounts of debris.
\r\n\r\n
It’s a convenient option—they handle all the removal and disposal for you.
\r\n\r\n
It can become costly for larger cleanups, so it’s something to consider when deciding between renting a dumpster and hiring a junk hauling service.
\r\n\r\n
Hauling Waste Yourself
\r\n\r\n
If you have a truck and/or trailer, hauling the debris yourself to a local landfill is always an option.
\r\n\r\n
The advantage of this method is the lower cost of disposal compared to renting a roll-off, although the tradeoff is less convenience and speed.
\r\n\r\n
The time it takes you to drive and drop off the debris at the nearest landfill can be substantial.
\r\n\r\n
Also, hazardous materials require a permit to haul, so do your due diligence as to the laws in your area regarding the types of waste you are allowed to haul and the types of debris accepted at local landfills (e.g., some accept only C&D debris and not household trash).
\r\n\r\n
Household hazardous waste (HHW) facilities safely process and recycle potentially toxic wastes, such as e-waste, household cleaners, paint, chemicals, medicines, and liquids.
\r\n\r\n
Some communities host HHW events on an annual or biannual basis.
\r\n\r\n
Find the nearest HHW drop off location online by visiting Earth911.com.
\r\n\r\n
And now, let’s discuss specific types of wastes and how to properly get rid of each type.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Types of Junk, Waste, and Debris
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Household Trash and General Waste
\r\n\r\n
Examples: household garbage, furniture, broken toys, packaging materials
\r\n\r\n
This category of waste includes anything you’d typically put in your waste bin.
\r\n\r\n
Generally, this category of waste is taken care of via your waste hauler’s curbside collection service.
\r\n\r\n
However, there are situations that require additional means, like hoarding situations, foreclosure cleanups, moving, and special events that generate a lot of trash.
\r\n\r\n
When you have more than your curbside roll cart can handle, a roll-off container works great for bulk amounts of household trash.
\r\n\r\n
Alternatively, hiring a junk removal company to pick up the trash for you is a convenient disposal method, too, and it may be a more cost-effective option for smaller jobs (less than a few cubic yards of waste).
\r\n\r\n
You could also haul these wastes to the landfill yourself if you live within close proximity of one.
\r\n\r\n
Disposal of appliances containing Freon, paints, liquids, lead-acid batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, and other household hazardous wastes (HHWs) require special handling.
\r\n\r\n
These wastes shouldn’t be mixed in with your household garbage.
\r\n\r\n
Contact your city’s solid waste department to find the nearest HHW facility, or visit the city’s website for more information.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Construction & Demolition (C&D) Debris
\r\n\r\n
Examples: lumber, drywall (sheetrock), wood flooring, carpeting, renovation debris, roofing debris
\r\n\r\n
Residential and commercial construction or demolition projects require the use of a dumpster, junk removal company, or driving the debris to the landfill yourself.
\r\n\r\n
Some U.S. cities require C&D debris to be dropped off at dedicated construction and demolition landfill facilities where it is separated and recycled.
\r\n\r\n
Concrete
\r\n\r\n
Like asphalt, this is a very heavy, dense debris that is best disposed of in a roll-off dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
Most dumpster rental companies require concrete to be separated from other wastes, and it must be loaded in a smaller container, such as a 10 yard bin, to ensure it does not become too heavy of a load for the roll-off truck to handle.
\r\n\r\n
Roofing Shingles
\r\n\r\n
This is a heavy debris that is generally loaded in its own dumpster and not in mixed loads.
\r\n\r\n
Shingles are recycled in most municipalities.
\r\n\r\n
Wood/Lumber
\r\n\r\n
Wood has a potential to be reused if salvaged properly.
\r\n\r\n
Reclaiming wood and selling or donating it is one way to cut down on disposal costs for a project.
\r\n\r\n
Carpeting
\r\n\r\n
A junk removal company offers the most convenient disposal solution in this case.
\r\n\r\n
Renting a dumpster or having your waste hauler pick it up are also valid options.
\r\n\r\n
Many waste haulers require the carpeting to be cut down to a specified length (e.g., 4 ft. lengths), so that may add to the inconvenience of going this route.
\r\n\r\n
Wood/Laminate Flooring
\r\n\r\n
This material is salvageable in many cases.
\r\n\r\n
This would, again, help cut down on disposal costs.
\r\n\r\n
If reclaiming the wood isn’t an option, other cost-effective solutions include renting a roll-off or hiring a junk removal company to pick it up.
\r\n\r\n
Siding
\r\n\r\n
Certain types of siding, such as cedar, are highly desirable, and people will often take it off your hands.
\r\n\r\n
This is great for cutting down on disposal costs.
\r\n\r\n
Simply posting a listing on Craigslist is an easy way to accomplish getting rid of cedar or wood siding.
\r\n\r\n
Vinyl siding is typically disposed of in a dumpster or picked up by a junk removal company.
\r\n\r\n
A dumpster is generally the more cost-effective option for a whole-house siding replacement project.
\r\n\r\n
Kitchen/Bathroom Renovation
\r\n\r\n
This includes cabinets, tubs, sinks, toilets, countertops, and floors.
\r\n\r\n
Much of this material can be reclaimed. Other materials can be disposed of in a roll-off container or via junk removal service.
\r\n\r\n
Most waste haulers do not accept renovation debris via curbside service.
\r\n\r\n
However, some will by appointment for an additional fee.
\r\n\r\n
Metals
\r\n\r\n
Bulk amounts of steel, aluminum, copper, and other metals should be recycled.
\r\n\r\n
Metal is a valuable commodity.
\r\n\r\n
You can eliminate disposal costs and make a few bucks by dropping off metal scraps at a local scrap yard.
\r\n\r\n
If you cannot DIY, some metal recyclers may be able to pick it up, or you can post an ad on Craigslist.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Yard Waste
\r\n\r\n
Examples: tree limbs, bush trimmings, grass clippings
\r\n\r\n
Being that it’s an organic waste, yard debris is best disposed by composting, but dumpsters and junk removal companies are good options, too.
\r\n\r\n
Dumpster companies and junk removal service providers will drop off the yard wastes at the proper facility.
\r\n\r\n
*Most waste haulers don’t allow yard debris mixed in with general waste.
\r\n\r\n
Heavy yard wastes, such as large logs, are best handled by professionals who have the right equipment to safely load and haul away such debris.
\r\n\r\n
Most junk removal companies have the right equipment to take on this type of project.
\r\n\r\n
Consider starting a compost pile if you have the room to do so.
\r\n\r\n
It’s the easiest and least expensive way to get rid of yard debris, plus it produces nutrient-rich compost ideal for farming, landscaping, and flower gardens.
\r\n\r\n
Be sure you know the laws regarding yard waste disposal in your area.
\r\n\r\n
Some cities have made yard debris composting mandatory.
\r\n\r\n
In this case, you’d need to have the debris dropped off at the proper composting facility.
\r\n\r\n
It may not be accepted at the municipal landfill, so be sure to do your due diligence.
\r\n\r\n
Search your city’s solid waste authority website or give them a call to learn more.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Appliances
\r\n\r\n
Examples: kitchen stove (range), microwave, washer, dryer, dishwasher, refrigerator
\r\n\r\n
Hiring a junk removal company for removal of one or several appliances is a quick and cost-effective method of removal. Junk haulers charge a minimum fee of anywhere from $50 to $125, so expect to be charged at least that amount for the appliance removal.
\r\n\r\n
A dumpster works well for disposal of a whole home's worth of appliances, such as during a major renovation project or demolition.
\r\n\r\n
Choose a bigger dumpster than you think you need.
\r\n\r\n
Why? Most roll-off containers have rounded bottoms, while most appliances are bulky and square.
\r\n\r\n
So while you may have 10 cubic yards worth of appliances (think of 10 kitchen stoves, which approximately equals 10 cubic yards), the appliances will consume greater than 10 cubic yards worth of space inside a dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
In this example, a 20 yard bin may be the better choice.
\r\n\r\n
Save on disposal costs by donating working appliances to local charitable organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity.
\r\n\r\n
Some locations may even pick them up for free, so be sure to ask!
\r\n\r\n
Alternatively, you can sell appliances that are still in good shape via Craigslist, Facebook, or by other means.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Household Hazardous Wastes (HHWs)
\r\n\r\n
Examples: lead-acid batteries, fluorescent bulbs, household cleaners, motor oil, chemicals
\r\n\r\n
This class of wastes should never be mixed in with the general waste stream, so avoid putting household hazardous wastes in the waste bin, dumpsters, burning it, burying it, or using any other unsafe disposal method. Doing so can taint drinking water, harm local wildlife, produce unsafe crops at local farms, and pollute the air.
\r\n\r\n
Dispose of HHWs by dropping them off at a local HHW processing facility.
\r\n\r\n
Some communities also host annual or biannual HHW pickup events where you can drop off a wide range of hazardous wastes found in your home.
\r\n\r\n
Junk removal companies, and some dumpster rental providers, will accept HHWs if you discuss it beforehand.
\r\n\r\n
There may or may not be additional fees for handling/hauling of hazardous materials—it depends upon the company and local laws governing HHW handling.
\r\n\r\n
Find a household hazardous waste recycler near you.
\r\n\r\n
Here’s a quick breakdown of common types of HHWs:
\r\n\r\n
Batteries
\r\n\r\n
Common A, AA, AAA, D, and similar dry-cell batteries can be thrown away with your trash.
\r\n\r\n
However, car batteries and other larger batteries need to be properly recycled.
\r\n\r\n
Liquids
\r\n\r\n
This includes motor oil, antifreeze, household cleaners, fuel, and other toxic/flammable liquids.
\r\n\r\n
Motor oil can be safely dropped off for recycling at a local oil change facility or car dealership that provides service.
\r\n\r\n
Other liquids can usually be dropped off at an HHW facility or cleanup event.
\r\n\r\n
Light Bulbs
\r\n\r\n
Fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) shouldn’t be mixed in with household trash.
\r\n\r\n
They contain small amounts of mercury.
\r\n\r\n
Drop these off at the nearest recycling facility that accepts CFLs.
\r\n\r\n
Some retailers, such as Lowe's and IKEA, also accept CFLs for proper recycling.
\r\n\r\n
Learn more about CFL recycling.
\r\n\r\n
Medicines
\r\n\r\n
Dispose of medications at your local cleanup event or HHW processing facility.
\r\n\r\n
If you do not have access to this type of event or facility, you can dispose of medicines in the following manner:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Mix medicines with dirt, kitty litter, or coffee grounds.
\r\n\t
Place in a plastic Ziploc bag and seal it.
\r\n\t
Throw the bag in your trash receptacle.
\r\n\t
Remove prescription labels and/or scratch out any personal information on the bottle to protect your privacy. Throw bottle(s) away.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Explosives
\r\n\r\n
Highly-flammable, combustible, and explosive wastes can be dangerous when mixed in with the general waste stream.
\r\n\r\n
Local laws dictate the proper way to dispose of wastes, like fuel, oil, fireworks, lighter fluid, matches, and others.
\r\n\r\n
Paint
\r\n\r\n
Wet paint must be dried before throwing it away.
\r\n\r\n
You can mix bulk amounts of paint with sand or similar material to dry it quickly.
\r\n\r\n
You can safely throw empty, dry paint cans into the trash or a rented dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
The one exception is if the paint is very old and may contain lead.
\r\n\r\n
It is unlikely this will be an issue considering lead paint was banned in 1978 (although lead-based paint was still sold for several years after that).
\r\n\r\n
If it’s a very old can of paint you need to dispose of, play it safe and bring it to a local recycling facility for proper disposal.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Recyclables
\r\n\r\n
Examples: paper, cardboard, plastics, metal
\r\n\r\n
Despite the slight downturn in recycling noted in recent years, access to recycling services is pretty extensive these days. For bulk amounts of recyclables, you have several options:
\r\n\r\n
Renting a dumpster is a quick and easy option for DIYers.
\r\n\r\n
Clean load it with recyclable materials only and the rental company may offer a discount.
\r\n\r\n
Junk removal is usually more expensive than renting a dumpster but much more convenient.
\r\n\r\n
Dropping recyclables off at a recycling center is the most cost-effective method for handling a low volume of recyclables.
\r\n\r\n
Posting an ad on Craigslist or Freecycle is another cheap and convenient way to get rid of recyclables.
\r\n\r\n
The potential downsides include having to wait potentially days or weeks (if ever) before finding someone to pick it up, and this method is generally limited to working well for valuable recyclables, such as metals.
\r\n\r\n
Bring scrap metals, like copper pipes, steel, brass fittings, iron, junk cars, etc., to a local metal scrap yard to get paid for your scraps.
\r\n\r\n
Some recycling facilities will even purchase bulk amounts of paper, cardboard, and plastics.
\r\n\r\n
For example, <a amounts).
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Food Scraps and Organic Waste
\r\n\r\n
Food and organic scraps can be composted.
\r\n\r\n
Not all food scraps are ideal for composting, however.
\r\n\r\n
Wastes that are excellent compost materials include:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Egg shells
\r\n\t
Fruit and vegetable scraps
\r\n\t
Coffee grounds and filters
\r\n\t
Clean paper and newspaper
\r\n\t
Vacuum residuals
\r\n\t
Hair and nail clippings
\r\n\t
Dirt, soil, grass clippings, dead leaves, and small tree limbs
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
<a started.
\r\n\r\n
Do not compost meats, cheeses/dairy, plastics, fats, dirty paper/paper towels, breads, dog/cat wastes (grass-eating animal wastes are ok), or processed foods.
\r\n\r\n
If you have a bulk amount of food or organic waste to dispose of, discuss solutions with your waste hauler or a dumpster rental provider near you.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Tires
\r\n\r\n
Tires are banned for disposal in landfills in the majority of states within the United States.
\r\n\r\n
Instead, they can be recycled or reused.
\r\n\r\n
Bring old automobile tires to a tire retailer for recycling.
\r\n\r\n
There may be a small fee involved in some cases.
\r\n\r\n
Alternatively, you can sell or give away tires that still have some tread left.
\r\n\r\n
Recyclers, artists, and companies that work with rubber may also take them off your hands for free.
\r\n\r\n
Post an ad on Craigslist, Facebook, or Freecycle.org to get started.
\r\n\r\n
Junk removal companies also haul away tires, and this is a cost-effective and convenient option if you have a large number of tires to offload.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Asbestos, Mold, and Lead Paint
\r\n\r\n
Found on drywall, paint, roofing materials, and other building materials.
\r\n\r\n
These toxic substances are more prevalent in older homes or commercial buildings.
\r\n\r\n
Before starting a renovation, demolition, or construction project in an older home, be sure to have it tested for asbestos, mold, and lead paint.
\r\n\r\n
Asbestos
\r\n\r\n
Asbestos fibers are released into the air when affected material, such as drywall, is disturbed.
\r\n\r\n
Left alone, asbestos isn’t harmful.
\r\n\r\n
It’s during renovation or demolition that the asbestos is released into the air.
\r\n\r\n
Exposure can lead to lung cancer, mesothelioma, and lung problems.
\r\n\r\n
Mold
\r\n\r\n
Avoid dangerous mold by controlling moisture inside your home, repairing leaks, and cleaning up after natural disasters.
\r\n\r\n
Mold can often hide behind walls.
\r\n\r\n
If you spot a large area of it, it’s best to leave the removal to the professionals.
\r\n\r\n
In terms of disposal, a mold removal specialist will properly discard of the materials for you.
\r\n\r\n
Otherwise, you can dispose of small quantities of moldy materials in a dumpster if the debris is bagged or wrapped in plastic.
\r\n\r\n
Lead Paint
\r\n\r\n
How you dispose of lead paint debris depends upon how much of it is present and what your state’s laws are regarding disposal.
\r\n\r\n
If a sample of the debris contains less than 100 milligrams of lead per kilogram, you can typically dispose of it like regular municipal waste.
\r\n\r\n
If concentrations of lead are greater than that benchmark, special disposal procedures must be followed.
\r\n\r\n
It’s best to hire a lead paint abatement specialist to test for lead paint and to dispose of it if necessary.
\r\n\r\n
To summarize, asbestos materials always require special disposal procedures, while mold and lead paint tainted debris can be disposed of the same way you would any other C&D debris as long as the levels are low.
\r\n\r\n
Rent a dumpster for larger cleanups, or hire a junk hauler to come pick up smaller amounts of debris.
\r\n\r\n
Always inform the rental company or junk removal provider that the debris is tainted.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Automobile Fluids and Chemicals
\r\n\r\n
Examples: motor oil, antifreeze, transmission fluid, cleaners, brake fluid
\r\n\r\n
Most chemicals and liquids are required to be disposed of at a licensed household hazardous waste (HHW) facility.
\r\n\r\n
Cities that do not have such a facility will typically hold HHW collection events once or twice per year where you can drop off chemicals and other hazardous wastes.
\r\n\r\n
Used motor oil can be brought to an oil change facility or auto parts store for proper recycling.
\r\n\r\n
Call ahead just to be sure.
\r\n\r\n
Never dispose of auto fluids or chemicals in the trashcan or a dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
Refer to Earth911 for more information and to find a local automotive fluids recycler near you.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Electronics (E-waste)
\r\n\r\n
Examples: computers, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, tablets, phones, other electronic devices
\r\n\r\n
Electronic waste, or e-waste, is growing in the U.S., and proper disposal of this debris is often misunderstood.
\r\n\r\n
Most e-waste is not allowed in the general waste stream; it should be properly recycled to avoid heavy metal contamination and other potential hazards.
\r\n\r\n
Some states, including California and New York, have banned disposal of e-waste in landfills or waste-to-energy (WTE) facilities.
\r\n\r\n
Instead of throwing e-waste in the trash, it should go to the proper recycling facility.
\r\n\r\n
What to Do with E-Waste
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Drop it off at a local electronics recycling facility.
\r\n\t
Hire a junk removal company to pick up the e-waste from you and drop it off at the Cost of Dumpster Rental and Junk Removal Services
\r\n\r\n
Dumpster rental and junk removal costs vary based on a number of factors, including the type and amount of debris, where you're located, the accessibility of your property, and who you hire.
\r\n\r\n
Your exact project cost will depend on these factors, and the best way to get an accurate estimate for your rental or project is to reach out to multiple service providers in your area for a quote.
\r\n\r\n
This not only ensures you get the best price but also allows you to choose the best company for the job, not just the cheapest.
\r\n\r\n
Location
\r\n\r\n
Do you live out in the country or far off the beaten path?
\r\n\r\n
If so, you can expect your dumpster rental or junk removal service to cost more due to the cost of travel incurred by the company.
\r\n\r\n
Cost of living and local disposal fees also play a large role in cost.
\r\n\r\n
For example, you’ll pay significantly more in New York City to rent a dumpster than you would in Memphis, TN based on the difference in cost of living.
\r\n\r\n
You'll also likely pay more for an apartment cleanout that requires hauling items up and down flights of stairs compared to the same size cleanout in the same zip code that is conveniently located on the first floor.
\r\n\r\n
Type of Debris
\r\n\r\n
Some service providers—dumpster and junk removal—charge differently for household wastes vs. construction and demolition (C&D) debris.
\r\n\r\n
C&D debris is often heavier, so it may end up costing more to haul away than general household trash.
\r\n\r\n
Amount of Debris
\r\n\r\n
The heavier the load, the more you’ll pay.
\r\n\r\n
For junk removal, costs rise as the volume of junk increases.
\r\n\r\n
A full truckload of junk, for example, costs more than a load taking up just half of the truck’s total capacity.
\r\n\r\n
Likewise, if you exceed the weight limit of your dumpster rental you'll likely be hit with overage fees.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
\r\n<h2 Phase 1 of Masdar City’s waste management plan will divert 50 percent of all waste away from landfills, or the equivalent of about 11,000 metric tons. The plan is to sort waste into three main streams: dry recyclables (i.e., cans and cardboard), wet recyclables (i.e., food scraps) and residuals (i.e., empty food containers). Dry recyclables will be shipped to the recycling center while wet recyclables will be composted and used for landscaping purposes. Other residual waste, including toxic waste, will be handled outside the city.
\r\n\r\n
The City of the Future?
\r\n\r\n
Is Masdar City the city of the future? It very well could be. However, it’s tough to say for sure until the city is fully developed and operational. This won’t happen until 2025 assuming everything stays on schedule. On paper, the city looks incredible and is amazingly eco-friendly. That said, there’s no way of knowing how accurate this will translate in real life. My best guess is that Masdar City succeeds in developing the most sustainable city in the world. However, it comes with a steep price – estimates put the price tag at around $18 to $19 billion.
\r\n\r\n
More Photos of Masdar City:
\r\n\r\n

\r\nImages via: Masdar City Official Website
\r\n","teaser":"
Smack dab in the middle of the desert is the location of one of the world’s greenest cities.
