A 30 or 40 yard bin filled with concrete debris is oftentimes too heavy for the roll-off truck to pick up and haul away.
\n
\n\n
LEARN MORE: The “Fine Print” when Renting a Dumpster
\n\n
Some (not many) rental companies offer larger dump trailers, or 50 cubic yard dumpsters, for disposal of very large amounts of debris, such as a commercial building demo. The obvious factors that play a role in choosing are price, amount of debris, and availability of the desired container.
\n\n
\n\t
Price: Do you mind paying $50 - $100 to get the 40 yarder?
\n\t
Capacity: Do you need the extra 10 cubic yards of volume offered by the 40 yard bin?
\n\t
Availability: Does the dumpster provider even offer a 30 yard bin? What about a 40 yarder?
\n
\n\n
These may be the first questions to ask yourself before calling to get quotes. These are also great topics to bring up during your phone conversation with the dumpster company.
\n\n
Now let’s dig deeper into each of the above factors…
\n\n
Price:
\n\n
While a 40 yard bin typically costs $50 to $100 more than renting a 30 yard box, that doesn’t necessarily mean a 30 yarder is the better—or even the less expensive—option.
\n\n
Here’s why…
\n\n
Say you rent a 30 yard bin, load it up, and find out that you have another few yards of debris to go. You would then need to rent a 10 or 20 yard dumpster to finish the job at an expense of usually $200 more. For an extra $50 or so, you could have rented a 40 yard bin in the first place and saved the money (and the hassle).
\n\n
\n
This is precisely why you should always overestimate the amount of debris, junk, or waste you plan to dispose of in your dumpster.
\n
\n\n
Capacity:
\n\n
When deciding between a 30 and 40 yard dumpster, choose the 30 yard bin only if you feel you have about 25 cubic yards or less of waste, junk, or debris.
\n\n
Don’t choose a 30 yarder if you have 30 cubic yards of debris. It may sound counterintuitive, but there’s a good chance you could exceed the loading capacity and/or weight allowance of the container, and that will increase your final bill.
\n\n
Usually, a 40 yard dumpster is a safe bet for handling the disposal requirements of a demolition, major remodel, or new construction project. However, large projects may require multiple dumpsters; but since most rental companies do not carry containers larger than 40 cubic yards, that would be your only option.
\n\n
Availability:
\n\n
You’re limited to the dumpster provider’s container inventory. If they don’t carry a 30 (or 40) yard bin, your options are obviously limited to what they do have. It may require renting multiple bins to get the job done.
\n\n
\n
Don’t hesitate to negotiate prices when renting multiple dumpsters from a rental company. Oftentimes when working with a local company, they’ll do what they can to get your business.
\n
\n\n
Check with at least 2 - 3 different dumpster service providers to ensure you fully investigate all the options available in your area. While one dumpster company may not carry a certain container size, or they are in short stock (all are rented out), another company may have the capacity you’re looking for.
\n\n
Let’s take a look at the advantages of each container size:
\n\n
30 yarder
\n\n

\n\n
\n\t
Rental fees are slightly lower
\n\t
Shorter sidewalls make it easier to side-load debris, junk, and wastes.
\n\t
30 yard dump trailers (on rubber wheels rather than steel wheels/feet) are more readily available compared to 40 yard dump trailers.
\n\t
It may be the largest dumpster offered by your chosen dumpster provider, so it may be the best (largest) option by default.
\n
\n\n
40 yarder
\n\n

\n\n
\n\t
Maximum loading capacity
\n\t
Generally only costs about $50 more to rent compared to a 30 yarder
\n\t
More cost-effective and time-saving choice if you’re on the border with which size to choose. Why? Going over the weight/loading capacity of a 30 yard bin can result in overage charges or having to rent a second bin.
\n
\n\n
Ideal container sizes for various projects:
\n\n
How much ________ fits inside a 30 yard roll-off container? Is a large dumpster necessary to accommodate the debris from my deck removal project?
\n\n
\n
One cubic yard is equal to a 3 ft. x 3 ft. x 3 ft. space. That’s approximately equivalent to the size of one standard-size kitchen stove.
\n
\n\n
This visual trick can help when estimating the amount of junk or debris you have to get rid of.
\n\n
Below, you’ll find some common projects and the right size dumpster for each…
\n\n
30 cubic yard containers
\n\n
\n\t
Roofing shingle tear-off – up to two layers of shingles on a 2,000 sq. ft. roof
\n\t
Large deck demolition – up to 1,000 sq. ft.
\n\t
Average size kitchen or bathroom renovation
\n\t
Whole-home cleanout (mainly trash/junk, not a lot of bulky furniture)
\n\t
Pole barn or large shed cleanout
\n
\n\n
40 cubic yard containers
\n\n
\n\t
New home construction
\n\t
House or other large demolition projects
\n\t
Roofing shingle tear-off – several layers of roofing shingles
\n\t
Commercial building cleanouts, demolition, or construction
\n\t
Major renovation or whole-home remodeling project
\n\t
Hoarding situations
\n
\n\n
Dumpster companies are very good at estimating the amount of debris various projects will generate. They are an excellent source of information in this sense, and a reputable company will help you choose the right container for the job. Be sure to take advantage of their vast knowledge.
\n
\n\n

\n\n
Final tips and considerations:
\n\n
Below are a few more bits of info that may help.
\n\n
\n\t
30 and 40 yard bins usually have a similar footprint. An average size container takes up about 22 ft. x 8 ft. of space, so you’d need the same amount of space (L x W) for placement no matter which one you choose.
\n\t
Household junk and wood tends to be much lighter compared to other construction materials, such as roofing debris, drywall, carpeting, tiles, and concrete.
\n\t
Dumpster companies may be willing to offer a discount if you load the dumpster with one type of recyclable material (known as a “clean load”) rather than mixed wastes. Recyclables are less expensive to dispose of, so you can usually get a better rate.
\n\t
Renting a large dumpster and splitting the costs with a neighbor is a cost-effective strategy.
\n\t
Clear out a space for the dumpster in a location that makes it easy to load. It will save time and make the loading process easier. Don’t forget to add about 8 ft. of clearance to open the door(s) on the rear of the dumpster.
\n\t
Keep the roll-off tarped or covered in some way when not in use. Rain and snow can saturate debris and add weight, possibly pushing you over your weight allowance. It also discourages other people from dumping their trash in your dumpster.
\n
\n\n
\n
If you’re ready to start your search for local dumpster providers, head over to the Hometown Dumpster Rental homepage and do a quick search for your city. Phase 1 of Masdar City’s waste management plan will divert 50 percent of all waste away from landfills, or the equivalent of about 11,000 metric tons. The plan is to sort waste into three main streams: dry recyclables (i.e., cans and cardboard), wet recyclables (i.e., food scraps) and residuals (i.e., empty food containers). Dry recyclables will be shipped to the recycling center while wet recyclables will be composted and used for landscaping purposes. Other residual waste, including toxic waste, will be handled outside the city.
\r\n\r\n
The City of the Future?
\r\n\r\n
Is Masdar City the city of the future? It very well could be. However, it’s tough to say for sure until the city is fully developed and operational. This won’t happen until 2025 assuming everything stays on schedule. On paper, the city looks incredible and is amazingly eco-friendly. That said, there’s no way of knowing how accurate this will translate in real life. My best guess is that Masdar City succeeds in developing the most sustainable city in the world. However, it comes with a steep price – estimates put the price tag at around $18 to $19 billion.
\r\n\r\n
More Photos of Masdar City:
\r\n\r\n

\r\nImages via: Masdar City Official Website
\r\n","teaser":"
Smack dab in the middle of the desert is the location of one of the world’s greenest cities. If you're not sure, just call a hometown trash hauler and describe your project and debris. Most are very helpful. When it comes to dumpster sizes, you may be better off renting a dumpster that is a little too large rather than too small. If you rent a dumpster that is too small, it ends up costing you double to have the first dumpster picked up and a new one delivered.
\r\n\t
Call to learn more - Call one or more of the preferred dumpster rental services that serve your area. Ask about their pricing, standard rental period, weight included in the price, materials not allowed in the trash container, and other rental policies.
\r\n\t
Schedule delivery and arrange payment - Schedule a date for delivery of a temporary dumpster to your home, job site, or place of business. It's recommended that you have your dumpster delivered the day before you actually need it.
\r\n\t
Request pickup - When your finished loading the trash or debris into the roll off dumpster, call the company back and they will pick the dumpster up and haul it away to the landfill, transfer station, or recycling center.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Dumpster rental costs
\r\n\r\n
The cost of renting a dumpster varies widely based on your location. The national average cost of renting a 10 yard dumpster is $300, while the national average cost of renting a 40 cubic yard container is nearly $500 for one-weekek rental. What you pay depends primarily on landfill fees in your area, the size of the container you need, and the dumpster company you select. To get the best price on a dumpster, get quotes from multiple rental companies.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Find a Dumpster Rental Company Near You
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Most companies quote one flat rate fee for delivery, pickup, and disposal (though some add delivery charges separately). The rental rate is usually for a standard period of time (for example... up to 7 days) and includes a certain amount of weight (for example... up to 3 tons). If you exceed this weight allowance, you will be subject to overage fees typically ranging from $50 to $100 per ton that you go over.
\r\n\r\n
When comparing dumpster rental prices between two companies:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Compare apples to apples (or 20 yard dumpsters to other 20 yard dumpsters... dumpster size can have a big impact on price).
\r\n\t
Ask how much time is included in the price and what it will cost if you need the container for a longer period
\r\n\t
Ask how much weight is included in the price and how much 'per ton' it will cost if the dumpster is over weight.
\r\n\t
Ask if any additional fees that may be applied for any reason
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Extra charges may apply if you need the roll off dumpster for longer than a provider's standard rental period. This is typically a per day fee (ie $5 or $10 per day), but some dumpster services will negotiate with you up front if you need it for slightly longer than their standard period.
\r\n\r\n
Pay particular attention to the amount of weight included in your price if you are disposing of heavy construction debris like bricks, cement, roofing shingles, or demolition debris. If you're renting a trash dumpster for cleaning out your home of miscellaneous household debris, you will typically not have to worry about 'over weight' fees because the debris is lighter.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Click Here to Find Reputable Dumpster Rental Providers Near You
\r\n","teaser":"
Learn how to rent a dumpster and be free of your debris. $100.
\r\n\r\n
If you have one or two items you’re getting rid of—like a TV, sofa, or mattress—you’ll probably be charged the minimum amount.
\r\n\r\n
For small cleanups, junk removal is typically the more cost-effective option.
\r\n\r\n
A junk removal company may remove a small garage-worth of items for $200 when it may cost you $250 to rent a 10 yard bin to do the class=\"content-box-yellow\">\r\n
Remember: Every project is different, so calling at least two dumpster rental and two junk removal companies to compare pricing is the best way to determine the most economical debris removal solution.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Find a local junk removal company
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
What Affects the Cost of Dumpster Rental and Junk Removal Services
\r\n\r\n
Dumpster rental and junk removal costs vary based on a number of factors, including the type and amount of debris, where you're located, the accessibility of your property, and who you hire.
\r\n\r\n
Your exact project cost will depend on these factors, and the best way to get an accurate estimate for your rental or project is to reach out to multiple service providers in your area for a quote.
\r\n\r\n
This not only ensures you get the best price but also allows you to choose the best company for the job, not just the cheapest.
\r\n\r\n
Location
\r\n\r\n
Do you live out in the country or far off the beaten path?
\r\n\r\n
If so, you can expect your dumpster rental or junk removal service to cost more due to the cost of travel incurred by the company.
\r\n\r\n
Cost of living and local disposal fees also play a large role in cost.
\r\n\r\n
For example, you’ll pay significantly more in New York City to rent a dumpster than you would in Memphis, TN based on the difference in cost of living.
\r\n\r\n
You'll also likely pay more for an apartment cleanout that requires hauling items up and down flights of stairs compared to the same size cleanout in the same zip code that is conveniently located on the first floor.
\r\n\r\n
Type of Debris
\r\n\r\n
Some service providers—dumpster and junk removal—charge differently for household wastes vs. construction and demolition (C&D) debris.
\r\n\r\n
C&D debris is often heavier, so it may end up costing more to haul away than general household trash.
\r\n\r\n
Amount of Debris
\r\n\r\n
The heavier the load, the more you’ll pay.
\r\n\r\n
For junk removal, costs rise as the volume of junk increases.
\r\n\r\n
A full truckload of junk, for example, costs more than a load taking up just half of the truck’s total capacity.
\r\n\r\n
Likewise, if you exceed the weight limit of your dumpster rental you'll likely be hit with overage fees.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
\r\n<h2
